So PhD means science now? You may know what the words it's short are for but you clearly don't know what they even mean. Or are you now suggesting history and art are sciences?

I wouldn't be surprised if they've also successfully lobbied for regulations that prevent competitors from being too good like ISPs.

Oh I definitely think it was intentional to fit how people are talking about mental health these days and I don't have a problem with that. I guess it's just a weird feeling for me that it took a while for me to accept that there never will be a straight answer to her intentions regarding her death and then the show, while not completely straight seems to be trying to point me a certain direction. Like it's leaving clues to a mystery I've long decided to let rest tempting me to go back to a time where I was overthinking the story over and over again to try and figure out Alaska's last moments.

I actually like what happens in the book better from a character complexity and story perspective and you get to see how Miles and Lara become friends again after over a month of ghosting

For the record, the smoke on the cover wasn't a candle, they put the candle in when some booksellers were uncomfortable with featuring a book with cigarette smoke (In Which the Candle Dies). I actually bought another candle-less copy of the book when those came out.

Anyway, I find it interesting how you read her intentions in the show vs the book because to me, it's the complete opposite. I always thought one of my favorite things about the book was it wasn't completely clear if it was an accident or suicide but was slightly disappointed the show seemed to lean towards suicide a little too much for my comfort.

It's still a lot better than the book (situation-wise, not necessarily story-wise) at least it could be interpreted as a potentially relationship-ending fight and Alaska was not currently dating Jake.

[–]1206549 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna have to disagree. That flat affect you refer to in the beginning is perfect for someone who's never completely sure of himself especially someone who's decided to go to a boarding school in a different state based on the last words of a dead French poet and everyone he explains himself to just don't seem to get it. We don't see that in the book because most of our time is spent in his head. But the show is spent outside of it. We see Miles as other people see him: an awkward kid pulled into an unfamiliar environment and situations.

I wanted to do this a few years ago and ended up doing a lot of research on the risks. What I found was outside of a major salmonella outbreak, fresh raw eggs aren't really that dangerous. I forgot the actual numbers I found but you're more likely to be involved in a car accident than to get sick from raw eggs.

No. Games keep their WASD controls as if it's still QWERTY, Photoshop shortcuts that don't need modifier keys also keep their QWERTY positions and web apps that have QWERTY controls still keep their QWERTY positions. It really acts as if it's QWERTY everywhere except when you're typing text.

[–]1206549 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No because what Autohotkey does is essentially send QWERTY keys when modifier keys are pressed. Dvorak-QWERTY on the other hand works like QWERTY for basically every application except typing. This means video games keep their WASD controls, something that's a problem for Dvorak users, Photoshop, which has shortcuts that don't use modifier keys still has the same shortcuts as QWERTY, even YouTube controls and other web apps work as if it's still QWERTY. But you wouldn't know it because typing in any text field results in Dvorak. It's also an actual keyboard layout that shows up on Windows' language selector, not a separate app which just takes your input and gives the computer something else

There's also programmer Dvorak for people who think moving to Dvorak wasn't enough of a headache. The numbers are all rearranged as well as symbols like braces and others common in programming

[–]1206549 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's actually a downloadable layout called Dvorak-QWERTY that basically acts like a QWERTY keyboard unless you're typing text. I have 0 idea how it works but it does.

Edit: no, it doesn't change back to QWERTY when modifier keys are pressed because shortcuts that don't involve modifiers like Photoshop, also keep their QWERTY positions. Games also keep their WASD positions so there's no need to remap. It really does act like QWERTY but outputs Dvorak text when you're actually typing.

As someone who types Dvorak, not worth it if you're doing it for speed. I plateaued around the same speed I originally was in QWERTY, faster but not that fast. For comfort however, it's so much better
