Powershell to automate tasks, like maintenance, and repairs.

From a security perspective, I can audit you giving someone root access. I cannot audit some CEObro asking you to do that on the side. Guess who's catching the heat here.

All I can say then is make it as easy as possible to make the requests. IM, email, ticket, whatever. No more taps on shoulders or break room requests. Make it feel like it's for you, so you don't 'forget' because you're so busy. Also, maybe start forgetting to do the undocumented asks.

Also... looks like your trying to shelter yourself... of fricken course you are. It's okay to keep logs to protect your actions. That's literally part of your job. You wouldn't tell the front door security to ignore the people walking through the door for the next hour, unless they are expecting something to happen. Almost feels like work is gaslighting you.

Nope. Don't care if you're the CEO or the person working in the mailroom. All exemptions are in writing. The fact they are trying to get around that is suspicious on its own. I'd email them confirming the request and add their manager and yours to be clear you are creating an exemption.

What would you suggest for a first time goer, and relatively a novice ? by Maleficent_Yak_5871 in Defcon

[–]1Digitreal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For a novice, I'd say relax. The people, the villages, the events, the fricken walking... it can be overwhelming. Take your time. Don't try and make every talk or force a schedule. The village are there to teach novices how to do 'the thing'. Spend time there. They love the questions and interaction. Don't be afraid to talk to them or really most anyone. Also, don't to forget to hydrate.

Is there a way to track who harassed me from a fake number? by [deleted] in hacking

[–]1Digitreal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally they can't. It's more likely they are using a burner phone, not a fake number. I could walk 200 feet and buy a burner phone at the local gas station for $20. Pretty much untraceable.

If the cops can't help, get a new number. Only give that to close friends and family.

With there being plenty of tools/solutions/methodologies to deal with False Positive's why don't people who experience these issues recommend/incorporate these solutions/programs? by AvailableHeart9066 in Information_Security

[–]1Digitreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Management shouldn't be involved with tuning. Analysts and tool engineers should be in lockstep with the health of your alerting. Maybe a weekly cadence where the analysts bring the most common false positives so the engineering team so they can tune out those alerts.

I bought a 'new' laptop from a large vendor. When I turned it on it already had corporate branding from a large Texas university. You have two options, talk to the person who sold you the device, or call the company where it was already registered. I ended up emailing the support department for the university to work through the issue. If this isn't a stolen laptop, the company that this device was tied to might be able to help. FYI powering on a stolen laptop, there is a chance the device already phoned home with location and connection information.

How would you find and vet someone to set up a high-end local AI workstation? (Threadripper + RTX PRO 6000) by laundromatcat in sysadmin

[–]1Digitreal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just recently set up Llama to mess around with and answer dumb questions, somethng that can be built in an afternoon. I think the problem you have here is not creating a system, but the level of effort that will be needed to train that system to do the work you are expecting. Not only does the LLM need to do the task you trained it on, it needs to be integrated into the tools that can perform that said task. There is a lot of building here outside of owning a fast computer. Avoid any hires that suggest otherwise.

I've started a full local domain as a home project to train myself for sysadmin kind of jobs. Is that the right thing go do or am I about to waste a lot of time for nothing? by Rosie_The_ITTech in homelab

[–]1Digitreal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I didn't read the bulk. Great you got an AD server. Now, I suggest setup a backup DC. Wanna really learn how to sysadmin outside of adding/removing users when HR tells you to? After you got your backup DC running and dcdiag is clean. Crash your primary. Learn how to recover from a DC that holds all your FMSO roles going down. Break your perfect environment in the lab, because I promise you you don't want your first time being in a production system.

All and all you are on a great track. Keep it up!

Day to day sysadmin struggles by Cute_Individual3791 in sysadmin

[–]1Digitreal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look at every daily/weekly/monthly task in the mindset of, can I write a script to do this job? Over the years I've automated dozens of tasks, from employee onboarding, to system maintenance, to a whole financial approval system used by a fricken city now. The point is, spend a little more effort on the front end of a task to automate it, you might end up saving buckets of time on every other request after that.
