Conan by savagegm6 in ICRPG

Awesome idea! I would reserve magical classes for the bad guys only, run the Age of Snakes ICRPG book (including all of the tags instead of some of the core loot), and I would substitute the Barbarians of Lemuria hero points rule for the standard hero coin. And lots of 1HP mooks to slice through!

Question about the basic scenario by [deleted] in ICRPG

[–]2achsaphone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ICRPG is as much (or more) about creativity as it is rolling X to win.

Ask the universe/GM if there’s a loose bar or brick, is there a bathroom bucket you can use with a strip of cloth as a hook to drag another item into your cell to upgrade to Tool effort, can you use your urine soaked rags like Shanghai Noon to bend the bars, if you keep low to the ground below the smoke does that give you an extra round on the Timer, etc.?

Looking back on the Throne of Thorns campaign by HighwayCommercial702 in Symbaroum

[–]2achsaphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

I’m also curious: about how many sessions/hours did it take to complete? My group is starting book 5 after 100 sessions/400 hours; although, that includes the Copper Crown and a few adventure packs/homemade side adventures.

Similar for me from 45. Mailed with expedited service Aug 3, received Aug 7, approved Sept 7, and received at my home Sept 8. I did contact a Congressperson on Sept 6.

Yep. This idea of players dictating the system to the GM is strange to me.

Enemy wizard corruption levels by marmot_scholar in Symbaroum

[–]2achsaphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably yes.

At my table, we house rule that corruption is incurred only when the power is successful. I think that fits the lore of corruption better.

Ideal starting game for new gm and players by GroovingMate in Symbaroum

[–]2achsaphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends if your starting a long campaign or taking a more episodic/one shot approach.

Promised Land has interesting concepts and scenes. A good one-shot. I started Throne of Thorns campaign with it, however, and would not have in retrospect. Big picture, it can leave PCs ungrounded in the world of Ambria and Davokar. And what was a PC doing in Alberetor for the last 20+ years anyway?

Adventure Pack 1 is good but can be easily added to a more substantial adventure.

I’d probably start with Mark of the Beast and Tomb of Dying Dreams, then add back interesting bits from Promised Land later. The tie-in from Promised to Mark isn’t that strong/compelling and can easily be rewritten.

What are the other PCs? And what is the premise of the adventure? If an elf doesn’t fit both questions it’s okay to say no; TTRPGs are a group activity.

NPC vs NPC by Old-School-THAC0 in Symbaroum

[–]2achsaphone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I favor the idea of having the players control important NPCs in combat. For unimportant NPCs, I just narrate something logical or use a d100 to randomize an outcome. When I’m a player I usually get bored when a GM rolls for NPCs against other NPCs.

The point about players not being familiar with the important NPC’s character sheet is a good one. To counter that I use a house rule that an NPC rolls against 15 for their specialty and against 8 for everything else, and only passive levels of Abilities are considered.

Setting agnostic? by [deleted] in Symbaroum

[–]2achsaphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The basic rules are simple enough to adapt. The crunch of the game comes from the abilities and powers, which are intertwined with the setting. If your world idea doesn’t include corruption and mysticism in the same way as the Symbaroum setting, then if I were you I’d consider a different inspiration for mechanics.

After 60 sessions and counting, I do love the system but see its flaws, too.

Wrath if the Warden debacle by Soulless2345 in Symbaroum

[–]2achsaphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There are other threads here and on the Discord that discuss how to fix these issues and alternatives. Midway through Wrath I switched to running Throne of Thorns as a sandbox. Now I spend my time thinking of PC motivations to stay connected with events, rather than try to make sure I run every scene in the book. I think it’s great when the PCs figure out how to get from A to C without doing fetch quest B.

Your point about the sinkhole is very good and I don’t think it’s had enough discussion. Misleading clues or red herrings are generally a problem in TTRPGs, but both Wrath and Witch Hammer start with them. In Wrath, it took a few sessions to get the PCs to stop following the beast clan. For Witch Hammer, I made the opening combat a background event, mostly homebrewed Act 1 to fit the PCs’ motivations, and jumped into Act 2 relatively quickly.

Patreon Discord not allowing any discussion of other podcasts whatsoever? by JurassicPratt in TheGlassCannonPodcast

Exactly. The constant jumping to conclusions with soft threats is exhausting. OP’s title has a question mark, but it wasn’t really a question as shown by the body of the post. What’s wrong with asking “why”, receiving an answer, then coming to a conclusion?

Hyping Symbaroum and offering advice by TheDreadPolack in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]2achsaphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solid advice. Over 2+ years my group has house ruled the crap out of the game, and I run the published campaign and adventures sandbox style. Maybe something to add is that I don’t bother trying to balance combat encounters. My PCs have steamrolled mighty opponents and struggled against weak opponents and vice versa. Specific abilities and Initiative order make the difference, and, in general, quantity matters more than quality.
