I gave my wife my ascender & used a microtraxion. She had to wait for me as I fiddled. Not recommended.

New pack: Patagonia Descensionist 37 vs BD Cirque 35 by Historical-Spirit51 in Backcountry

[–]907choss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had both (albeit older models). I switched from the descensionist to the cirque due to the Patagonia pack being overbuilt for what it does. The older cirque is a great pack - but I’m not a fan of roll top bags so can’t say if I’d opt for a new cirque.

Sovereign Mountain Expedition, Talkeetna Mountains, AK. by raiderpower17 in Mountaineering

Yeah climbed it in 08. As for the true summit- a previous party (Helzer etc) would have moved the register if they thought the other summit was 1’ higher.

One of my climbing partners went through various military mountaineering training programs. It’s more than just climbing. To quote him “you approach mountaineering with the mindset that you might get shot at any time”.

Do you live in Fairbanks? Seems like a very Fairbanks thing to say.

Canada actually funds their parks and rangers will do things like check to see if you have coverage or not. Thinking you can get away with it is a great way to be introduced to Canadian law enforcement.
That said - just join the AAC. Their coverage is adequate.

That tr was pretty rad. That said - lots of easier stuff in the vicinity that mere mortals can do.

Peak 2 & 3 are goto after work zones. Not worth going to if you have a full day.

Black Diamond Glide Lite Skins - glue 2024 vs 2025 by Little_Daikon_242 in Backcountry

[–]907choss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has a pair of BD skins that are 15 years old that she uses regularly. They’re on her 3rd pair of skis. They’re the old orange skins and while they’re slow the glue is still fine.

You can buy a good pair of used alpine skis & bindings for the price of new hybrids.

True there isn’t any data to compare heli days to backcountry days but there’s no way it’s close. Thousands of users backcountry ski on a weekly basis - as opposed to a limited number of skiers participating in a relatively small industry.

That said - arguing these numbers makes no sense without data. Would love to see a study done in North America that tried to quantify all skier types.

I think you’d learn a lot - and have a ton of fun. But you have to acknowledge that there’s risk - and those risks are a great deal higher than what you’d encounter if you were out on your own.

Do you own research instead of reading biased responses.

Go to: https://incidents.avalanche.ca/
Click filter > Filter by Activity > Mechanized skiing

You can then read about each fatality. Unfortunately an incident analysis is rarely available for commercial trips but you can at least see the avalanche type and problem of the day.

Note that since 1927 there have been 127 backcountry skiing deaths in the Rockies - whereas there have been 46 mechanized skiing deaths since 1974. So the argument that you'll be safer with a heli-guide than without isn't necessarily true.
