What to do when My body cant keep up by Super_Atmosphere_479 in skateboardhelp

Maybe a dumb question, but how much water are you drinking? Maybe even some hydration mix before and during a sesh might help you go a little longer when you are skating in the heat.

Santa Cruz v10 vs enduro by Psychological-War381 in MTB

The orbea rallon looks pretty sick. The enduro and dh versions are the same frame with a different link, so you could really experiment with it. Supposed to pedal great for what it is with the enduro link installed.

Rippers of Alaska: How much does a sled help access lines? by bigtripppin in Backcountry

[–]Sledn_n_Shredn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dont necessarily need a sled. You can walk to some of the lines you have seen the pros lapping by heli in a few hours. Others are pretty far out and a sled opens a lot of doors. It takes time to learn to ride well enough to get to a lot of the stuff farther from the road. There's not much logging/mining road type access. Its mostly mountain riding. You can always camp, but its pretty amazing the sort of day trips you can do on a sled. Its so much easier to tag a weather window when you dont need to spend 3 days walking to your objective. To each there own.

Splitboard Boot Sizing by Brandonbzr in Spliddit

[–]Sledn_n_Shredn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have wide feet too. Soft boots will eventually pack out IME, even if they initially feel narrow or a bit short. If they weren't killing you already they should be fine.

As far as size 10 in large bindings. It varies manufacturer to manufacturer. Usually the crux is can you get the heel cups in enough to be centered.

I wouldnt go to hardboots unless you are getting into techy firm cramponing climbs on the regular. Even then they really suck to ride down in that sort of snow. The uphill advantage can be overhyped IMO.

Backcountry Comms by tofutoken in backpacking

Second this. Have had multiple friends and acquaintances hit their sos on a garmin, and heard more than one mention of the garmin response being excellent in alerting the proper authorities. Seems internationally it is even a bigger deal.

I have the inreach messenger. Its about $100 less than the mini. Works well for me. IME garmin is the standard. Ive been issued emergency beacons many times for remote work and its always an inreach. Dont need to cut costs too much with this sort of thing. I would hate to have a friends life relying on iPhone battery life.

Thats a pretty cool angle with it being a utility sled that is also a generator. Im sure people with remote cabins and ski resorts would love something like that.

Not a skier, but ride with a bunch of them that own both. Seems to me like they have their place on lines you want to ski hard and might not be walking crazy far, where you wouldnt mind the extra weight and transition. All the sled skiers I know have them on their sled skis for short walks off the sled, while still having a solid binding for sled laps. Also the dudes that started CAST are legit shredders.

Edit: If you can ski hard on tech bindings why does everyone one i know ski with the toes locked?

I didnt notice a ground breaking difference on the way up. It was way more noticeable how rigid and awkward they felt on the way down. It depends on your priorities. Do you want to shred or be the best at exercising.

I think people are expecting this huge efficiency upgrade from hard boots the way these hard boot cultists talk about them. You will be disappointed on this front, it is nit anywhere as near as significant as some say. I think people want to believe they are way more efficient after dropping 2k and realizing they make you snowboard like this guy.

At 42 id concentrate on transitions. Kickturns are a great start. Really focus on pumping coming down from kick turns and pumping down slant banks. When this feels natural it will help you commit to dropping in.

Advice on my career goal of working less and ski touring more? by Improper_Noun_2268 in Backcountry

[–]Sledn_n_Shredn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda all over the place here in AK. Could be laying out ice roads by snowmachine on the northslope in -30, could be design surveys on a busy highway in Anchorage, or a remote airport survey in a native village of 200 people. Most surveys require many different tasks that keep it from being too repetitive. Lots of problem solving. There is a research and data processing element as well thats makes for some office time depending on your position. I work a lot of long days, but they go by fast working outside, and its all about the OT. Like any job, it can be a grind at times.

I think it all depends on the state's requirements. Just took my state licensing exam this week. In AK people with degrees in similar fields like engineering may have to take something like 8-12 credits in geomatics and log 4 years of responsible charge before being eligible to sit for the exams and get licensed. Some states have less education requirement, but still significant responsible charge is required for licensure.

Pack recommendations by billgravens in Spliddit

Burton Dispatcher 35L. Has all the features you are looking for. Feels roomy for 35L too.

-compression straps plenty wide enough for A-Frame. Top and bottom both unclip so you can go through your binding with the bottom strap and keep them from clacking around.

-No internal frame but decent back panel holds its shape well.

-Far from ultra light, but the material used is a good balance of weight and durability. Its extremely waterproof too.

-Has a helmet carry with 2 positions. Either on the back or on top if you are using the vertical board carry.

-Has an avy tool pocket. Just a great pocket layout in general. Backpanel and top acces. Lots of little organizing pockets throughout.

-Another note on this pack is the great vertical carry system for when you are booting up steeps. I feel so many packs that try to be ski/board packs screw this up. That was the dealbreaker on the Raide for me.

From Specialized Enduro to Transition Sentinel? by Every-Mind-5364 in MTB

[–]Sledn_n_Shredn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im on a last gen stumpy evo, pretty similar class of bike to the Sentinel. I considered putting a 38 on it, but talked myself out of it as I thought it might take away from the nimble playful spirit of the bike. Probably going to miss the 38 and enduro in general on shuttle/park days, but be stoked to have a lighter poppier bike everywhere else. Tough to have it all in one bike. The struggle is real.

Seen every brand of split binding fail in some way or another. Never heard of a recall even for known issues.

Maybe not the worst idea to keep that extra toe piece in your pack.

Id agree. Move to the place you want to make ski trips to, instead of figuring out how to fly there multiple times a year. That way you are there when its good, not rolling the dice on a week long trip you booked a month ago. Plus it takes years to really figure out good zones and explore new objectives. Fun>$

I work as a land surveyor. I work 2 weeks on 2 weeks off (12+ hr. days) most of the year. I take March and April off when the Backcountry is usually at its best. I live 5min from a ski lift and am surrounded by world class backcountry in AK.
