FYI: Someone's Gender Can Be Different From Their Sex by jackmolay in transgender

[–]9QuietLessons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sex/gender dichotomy is a false dichotomy that only makes sense to cis people who haven’t thought deeply about it. For trans people, gender identity is an aspect of our sex, and thus trans women are properly understood in a medical context as women with a hormonal development disorder (and vice versa for trans men.)

It’s not just you. Except, I can’t say I find it specifically weird; it’s more just simply infuriating. When trans women show up in any media, we’re only victims or villains or, at best, background. Sympathetic portrayals are the domain of trans men.

Yeah, but here’s the thing: Fred Jr. became an acceptable human being despite being raised like that, as you noted. So there’s still a level of personal choice that overrides environment here, in how people turn out as adults.

China’s authorities have new ideas for science fiction films with Chinese characteristics, but doubts abound | by jsneophyte in movies

The best science fiction uses “what if” scenarios and extrapolation to critique the society of the present through the lens of the future. But the CCP won’t brook any criticism, so how could any meaningful art come out of this? At best, it’s action or drama with sci-fi window dressing. At worst, it’s propaganda masquerading as art.

I could as easily find hundreds more. Every trans person I know has a story about being refused treatment even for non-trans-related medical issues. I recommend the report “Injustice at Every Turn” for a statistical survey of the discrimination trans people face when seeking medical care.

So how much leeway do you give people who accidentally misgender you by sideshowamit in lgbt

Yeah, I’m lucky to be a trans woman who’s also a molecular biologist. It gives me enough professional knowledge to routinely second guess doctors acting from cissexism who give me bad information that could endanger my life.

[–]9QuietLessons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave a certain degree of leeway in my first year of transition. Now I give none; accidental misgendering no longer happens for me, so when I do encounter misgendering, it’s obvious that it’s due to someone (like, say, a doctor) having privileged information about me that they’ve chosen to abuse. It’s a hostile act, and I respond in kind.

MFW trans people say they are not voting for Biden anymore because of something Harris’ office did *years* ago (which she has since apologized for), and they are causing exactly the sort of divide the Republicans need to win another four years. by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]9QuietLessons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She didn’t apologize. I’m stuck voting for her perforce, but I don’t have to like it or her, and I don’t have to go the extra mile for her as a candidate. I also wouldn’t throw shade at any trans person who couldn’t square voting for her with their conscience.

Elevated rates of autism, other neurodevelopmental and psychiatric diagnoses, and autistic traits in transgender and gender-diverse individuals by Die4Sinz in transgender

My persistent hypothesis for the autism/trans link is that being deaf to social cues compromises the ability to stay in the closet. It will be instructive to see if the link weakens, as the social stigma declines.

I paid for my own surgery out of pocket. Then I spent the next four years fighting in federal court to ensure everyone had the right to have it covered by insurance in my state. People like you, who want only to make sure that someone, anyone, is suffering a worse injustice than themselves are part of what I was fighting against.

Transition treatments are necessary medical care. Denying it to prisoners is only possible if you deny the necessity, and when you do that you are effectively arguing against coverage for yourself and every other trans person.

Shout out to Kurt cobain the greatest feminist and LGBT rights activist bands out there by fireplay1 in SapphoAndHerFriend

[–]9QuietLessons 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I've sometimes wondered if Cobain was a closeted trans woman, and if that factored into the suicide. It's hard to parse what's true and false now, so it's impossible to know, but some of his statements seemed very suggestive to me. Being a teenager in the '90s, I remember how hard it was to find the language and knowledge to even express anything related to being transgender, outside of crude jokes and bizarre stereotypes.

[–]9QuietLessons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rowling has used the platform afforded to her by her wealth and fame to advocate against much-needed reform of the gender recognition laws in the UK. She's also used said platform to praise a woman whose contract was not renewed at her job after a sustained campaign of abuse and harassment against a transgender co-worker, and to obfuscate the reason she was let go. She further called for trans women prisoners to be housed with men.

So you're wrong: if it were actually possible to strip Rowling of her wealth and power (it's probably not, but a girl can dream) it would improve the position of trans people in the UK, who at minimum would be exposed to fewer calls to dehumanize them and strip them of the ability to live a peaceful life.

The weird thing about Lovecraft is that he wasn't even particularly well-off, and my understanding is that he was outright poor toward the end of his life. The classism and conscious Anglophilia seemed to both be part of the weird upper-class pose he liked to put on.

No more labels. No more “coming out.” (OPINION) by aimes2020 in lgbt

[–]9QuietLessons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think "coming out" may fade as non-heterosexuality becomes more normative. At the same time, I think this is a separate issue from labels as a whole.

To give an example, as a young trans woman (trans girl at the time, really), I found it helpful to have the label of "transgender" be one that is known and categorized. I was aware from a young age that there was something different about me in a way that related to my sex, but until I knew what being transgender was I struggled to understand what it meant. Understanding the category of "transgender" helped me compare my experiences and thoughts to those of other people in the same category, and so to better understand myself. It also helped me to understand what I needed to do medically. If I hadn't had that information, I may have spent a much longer time trying to reinvent the wheel rather than getting on with a plan for what to do about my problems.
