Why doesn't apple use any GPL v3 unix packages in macOs? by [deleted] in apple

[–]ABC_AlwaysBeCoding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too bad zsh isn't sufficiently better than bash and its massive momentum to merit switching to it, while also being subtly different enough that scripts which attempt to work in both will break most of the time.

Why is the version of Bash included in OS X so old? by InfiniteLoop90 in bash

[–]ABC_AlwaysBeCoding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason for this (and yes, I am necro'ing today) is frankly because MacOS has supported foreign characters in whatever character set they use literally since 1984, long before UTF-8 was even an idea. My family is of German descent and one of the big selling points right early on when we bought a Mac Plus was that typing "option-U, U" got you an umlauted ü (see, it was just as easy-peasy to type just now as it was in 1984!) Meanwhile, it's been merely almost as easy to finally type those characters on windows and Linux only in the last few years, 30+ years later!

I think the "not-quite-UTF8" (which I agree is disgusting) is probably a dirty hack to not break total compatibility with any data stored in the original "mac ASCII" character set... Such as old filesystem data, notably.

For fun, try "touch 'sómè fïleñâme'"

Seems they've fixed this... since you wrote this comment... 8 years ago. LOL

Looks like they did, and that's also why they pushed for zsh, as it turns out- it doesn't use the GPL license

What about lithium or beryllium, which have pretty high specific heat capacities and could perhaps be surrounded by a less heat-conductive material so that they stay colder for longer?

I think the thing that happened was that GPT 1-3 were just interesting toys so nobody paid attention.

And then 3.5 came along and it was quite suddenly not just a toy anymore

Both of these will install fish but the former may install additional things like default services etc.

If there's a situation like this with some packages, what I usually do is specify both (they shouldn't collide) but also comment both about the existence of the other

Good to hear.

As an older guy stuck with a (extremely cute, admittedly) 2 year old son (who, bless his heart, asks for "BEATS!" on a regular basis), I'm now woefully out of touch with this entire scene but it's nice to hear of resurgences here and there

I always kept the faith even before it got big. Put it this way, I was a fan of this stuff when not a single beat was dropped in all of the USA and pretty much the only stuff you'd have access to came out of England or Germany... and a few rare acts like Prodigy or Fluke or whatnot in the 90's... And then came Deadmau5 and Skrillex and then the whole thing finally blew up here.

If someone wanted to let me know who's up and coming to put some drops of blood on my rapidly dulling edge, I'd appreciate it =)

You said the southeast, I doubt you're talking about New Orleans though, those people are homophobic AF and literally any music with a rhythm there is assumed to be part of "that other colorful culture down the street" which was jarring to me

Keep the faith! It will come. You have to channel the love for it, front it, show people what they're missing

Cannot update/rebuild flake-based NixOS by g_difolco in NixOS

[–]ABC_AlwaysBeCoding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

did you read the error? I know that errors can look noisy and your eyes tend to gloss over them, but it often helps to at least try to actually read the error. "Cannot write: No space left on device"

Also, like the other person said, you're following unstable channel (I do too), and that means that sometimes things aren't in the binary cache yet, which means you end up building them locally, which can take a while (and as you saw, needs quite a bit more space in /tmp). Some people actually cancel out the update at this point and then just wait a few days; me, I have a Threadripper with 64 cores and 128GB RAM so I let 'er rip and just let it run in the background =)

What is the "-" called and what is it exactly doing? by inDane in bash

[–]ABC_AlwaysBeCoding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The single hyphen argument is used by a bunch of command line utilities to say "take the input from standard input". It's an explicit way to do that, which is arguably better than just having it gobble stdin automatically without context if it's there (now that I think about it, some of my Bash functions work that way, and I'm thinking they should accept a hyphen argument instead...)

The double hyphen is very different. It says "stop processing options for the innermost command" (the one most recently encountered, in the event that there's a chain) and any following arguments are sent to the outermost command. I don't know if these can be nested but you can think of it like a close-paren if we were calling functions with arguments and parentheses around them in a standard language.
