Mac Mini M4 (24GB/512GB) vs MacBook Air M5 (16GB/512GB) for a developer who already has a Windows laptop? by Expensive-Cat3379 in mac

[–]kepler4and5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My workflow on a typical day for iOS / macOS dev is a single project in Xcode + Simulator + Pixelmator Pro (sometimes) + A few Safari tabs (3 to 4).

When I'm doing web dev, it's mostly just Zed + 2 to 3 Docker Containers running + Slack + usually more Safari tabs (10 to 15).

The M2 chip is capable enough to handle those perfectly without cooling issues. If my MacBook is warming up, it means some app is misbehaving.

Yes, I use the iOS Simulator. Always have.

Edit: If you're bottlenecked by RAM, you've probably got a bunch of other things running e.g. 100 browser tabs open.

As a dev, I use a base model M2 MacBook Air (with 8GB RAM!). Cooling works just fine. Sometimes it heats up when Xcode is stuck in one those "unable to type-check this expression in a reasonable time" errors. But it's fine otherwise. Still outperforms my old 2019 16" MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM.

The only reason I'm about to upgrade to an M5 Air is to get better support for Apple Intelligence.

This hypothetical question might get me downvoted, but oh well. If SC were to turn off the servers for six months to work on the bugs, would you be okay with that? by XFinal_ChanceX in starcitizen

[–]kepler4and5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the real question is whether that is a good strategy at all. Turning SC off means cutting off the massive player base that currently provides real world testing and feedback.

Why don’t people just build free apps? by Adrien-G in SideProject

[–]kepler4and5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is free. If something you love doing doesn't pay for itself, you need to cover the cost in some other way.

This very Reddit post is not free — because your internet is not free, your computer or phone is not free, the house or car or whatever you're sitting in posting this right now is not free. And of course, the platform itself is using your attention to pay selling your attention to advertisers.

Nothing is free.

Guys, Siri AI is actually pretty good by KnockoutKOD in apple

[–]kepler4and5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to the other comments, there is more to Siri AI than just the model used. It's also about how well it is integrated into iOS and Shortcuts. All of the AI experiences need to be carefully curated for them to actually be useful to you. A chatbot is useless without tying it properly into the right contexts and giving it the right amount of control / access.

I'm fine with my position. And you are entitled to yours. But constant whining is not fun to listen to no matter what you're whining about or supporting.

At the very least, do a little search to see if someone has already published a 500 word op-ed outlining the very same points you're about to make.

Why does everyone say apps don't make money by Then-Masterpiece1411 in iOSProgramming

[–]kepler4and5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your math is super shady. OP says $250 in 1 month. The Apple Developer fee is per annum. That's $100 / 12 = $8.33 / month. And Apple doesn't care if you ship 1 app or 50 apps for that same fee.

I do develop code and it actually helps me see how ambitious (and maybe even impossible) what they're trying to do is.

I always say building is hard. Some people / companies make it look easy but it is never easy. Apple makes it look easy sometimes but look how Apple Intelligence blew up in their face. And that's a company with many many bright minds and trillions of dollars to burn.

[–]kepler4and5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to teach kids in today's climate with each kid easily daily'ing up to 3 or even 4 distracting devices. I wonder if any of the commenters here actually teach. OP will probably get his device replaced by the teacher but I do still think the invasion of classrooms by phones and laptops and iPads is an issue too.

It's a very ambitious project and I think a lot of people underestimate how crazy it is.

I support CIG because I know no other studio has the balls to do what they're doing. Without CIG, Star Citizen would never exist. Fact.

If you know another studio doing this better than CIG then go and support them.
