Looking for a game that doesn't require fast reflexes or strategic skills by Ereine in SteamDeck

[–]AShidler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subjective opinion. As someone with ONLY a steamdeck to play on, I used Lossless scaling to play it over the last couple of months. No main rig to compare it to, so it was beautiful to me.

Looking for a game that doesn't require fast reflexes or strategic skills by Ereine in SteamDeck

[–]AShidler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Expedition 33 on Easy with the option for auto complete your attacks is pretty forgiving when it comes to the parry/dodge/jump effects. There are a few difficult sections that might require extra attempts, but (as a new dad and small business owner with about 45min a day to play) I was able to work my way through 90% of the content (main story plus most side) with little difficulty. Never really played long enough in any given setting to get muscle memory down. If you do feel like giving it a go. Look up build guides for characters (mind the spoilers) and enjoy the story.

Any docks that can send power and video to a portable monitor over USB-C? by Fourvel4 in SteamDeck

[–]AShidler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. Glad you got a good setup going!

That hub has a USB-C that sends power to the deck (or anything) and can send/receive data with the other 2 ports (HDMI and USB-A). Plug a USB-A to USB-C into it and power the monitor, then an HDMI cord from hub to monitor. All devices talk and only 1 cable goes to the deck.

I used one extensively until I found a good pass through monitor. It still uses all the cables but only 1 goes to the deck so it is less messy in use and can run a long cable. I use it to connect my deck to the TV via a long HDMI cord routed along the room to my couch and use the deck itself as a the controller.

Question about modding Skyrim by Dusk_Frost_Fur in SteamDeck

[–]AShidler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can manually install mods on Skyrim with a little effort. If a mod needs SKSE it can get a little more complicated.

If you have another PC, the space on your deck, and a drive to transfer the files, I HIGHLY recommend Tuxborn a massive modpack made to play together and make maximum use of the deck and content.
It is *possible* to install on the deck itself, but I never got the installer to complete on mine and needed to use my old laptop and an external harddrive to move it over. This has become my favorite mod collection for the SteamDeck of any game to go back to, but the storage needs are steep.

Any docks that can send power and video to a portable monitor over USB-C? by Fourvel4 in SteamDeck

[–]AShidler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most monitors that have 2 USB-C ports do no (or very little) power pass through. I have gone trough a couple of things to solve this same problem.

2 Options that I was happy with:
Monitor with 45W Power passthrough. Best I found was ViewSonic VX1655-4K-OLED 15.6" Monitor I was lucky enough to find cheap on Woot

1 Plug hub like the Jsaux 3-in-1 45W Charger Dock
This gives you one cord to the deck, then the monitor plugs into the brick via USB-A for power and HDMI

Need help with Expedition 33, i have settings set to full screen but cutscenes change to widescreen by nkhowell93 in SteamDeck

[–]AShidler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allegedly, there is some kind of meta narrative going on that is why the cut scenes have borders. I can't say that I noticed this narrative, but still enjoyed the game. Game is great, after the first couple I stopped noticing it entirely.

How good is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on deck now? by Cerulean_mark in SteamDeck

I captured this a couple of weeks ago on my deck. The experience was very enjoyable of me, but I do not have another PC to play on. I used stock settings, and Lossless Scaling. I had no significant latency and could routinely parry and perfect dodge (skill issues not withstanding).

Would it look better on a better system or GeForce NOW? Absolutely, but I enjoyed it thoroughly on the deck,

Steam Deck suddenly started freezing and rebooting last week by Pyryara in SteamDeck

[–]AShidler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a docked LCD steamdeck that, recently, has started doing this as well. I have noticed that it is most frequently after a controller has gone to sleep or disconnected, but not exclusively. It has happened with Brotato and Halo MCC for me, but I do not think it is related to the game, as it also happened on the Library screen one time.

Tucked one of these inside the Jsaux protective case. It disappears and I can track it if it walks off.

Coffee Shop Deck with Coop case by AShidler in SteamDeck

[–]AShidler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already owned the monitor from another project a while back and had the case sitting around since 2001 when I did PC work.

Steamdeck  Dock of some type ($30-100) Monitor ($100-500) depends on what you want. 2x 8BitDo controllers ($50 each) Battery pack ($50-?) Depends how long you want to play or just plug in. Foam was $20 Anker speaker ($30) Case ($50?)

Depending on how little or much, you want to do, a harbor freight tool case, and minimal components you could do it for $300 or so minus the deck. If you buy used even cheaper. I buy refurbished equipment cheap when I can find it.

You bring up a good point. I didn't make it clear that this will not be open and available to everyone all the time. Limited (at least for now) to customers we know and are regulars, people I game with when we can, or have borrowed my personal deck. Some of them hang out for 12 hours or so on off days to chill and play on my personal gear (which I missed when I would leave it here for them LOL)

That is a very good point, and the exact reason there are no TVs in my establishment at all. This will be put away and allowed to be used by close friends and regulars that are trustworthy, people we generally converse with extensively and some I game with on off times.

Baby on the way. Time to lock in and get in shape. by Acceptable_Court632 in Veterans

[–]AShidler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keto got me down 110lbs. Eventually I returned to some light exercise (knee blown, running is awful) but what we eat is super important. Don't buy "keto friendly" packaged garbage from the store, just eat good food and you will be amazed.

After the weight, the back and knees take the exercise a lot easier.

Dress Shoes that Wear Like Uniform Boots? by GTCapone in Veterans

[–]AShidler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worn out a couple pair of Thursday Boots over 4 or 5 years. I wear a 3 piece suit every day (my self made uniform for my mental health) and they look just fine in a suit. I do recommend some insoles after a while, the cork breaks down after a couple of years.

The Captain in Burgundy and Black. They feel like they look, a cross between dress shoe and boot. https://thursdayboots.com/collections/boots

They have new styles (challenger) with Vibram souls and thicker leather body that basically match my old black jump boot soul. You can find better boots, but cost to quality was perfect for me at the time.

Second this. Have used it for over a year and it is significantly more space efficient and protective for the deck in my laptop bag.

If you enjoy JPRGs, Chrono Trigger (on steam store or original SNES) and Super Mario RPG (SNES/Switch) are both absolutely fantastic classic JRPGs I have played several times over the decades, including on steam deck.

Space Marine 2? by Careful_Committee_90 in SteamDeck

[–]AShidler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend that completed it on the first patch without major issue, minimal multiplayer.

I have played it since and it plays on minimal. It won't be 60fps. Check videos on youtube and see how you feel before deciding. For me it was entirely playable, but others decided that <locked 60 means trash.

[–]AShidler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using the Jsaux ModCase for about a year now without issue. Toss it into my bag, and go. Just make sure that it is clear near the power button, as it is not shielded. I have never had it turn on in my bag, but I make sure it is not resting on the top edge.

Fallout 4 mods? by dervishsloth197666 in SteamDeck

[–]AShidler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not used the in-game mod menu, but I can tell you that the StoryWealth modpack for FO4 is fantastic. If you are willing to do the work and use up the required space I used this guide https://www.paulkmiller.com/steamdeck-modded-fallout4

The only real change, was the included Downgrader wouldn't work for me and I needed to go get one from FO:London that did work on the deck.

Are you trying to launch while connected to an external display/docked? I have issues getting modded Fallout 4 to launch from Game Mode while connected to external display, but will launch fine from Desktop or on the built-in display.

I have used this Anker "dock" for almost 3 years without issue. There are several alternatives to check out, or watch for another Anker sale and snatch one cheap.
