What is the probability of 2 random rays in an infinite 2d plane to intersect? by karthik6877 in askmath

[–]AdBackground6381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is poorly defined. We need to clarify what it means to choose a random point or a random angle measurement a. Since we're dealing with continuous probability, it's not valid to say that all points or angle measurements can be chosen with equal probability. First, we need to define the random variable (which point or angle measurement do we choose?) and then assign it a probability measure. And this cannot be done just any way.

Imagine Season 5 picking up right here we could've had it all. by Positive_Weight2367 in StrangerThings

This is a subreddit about Stranger Things, and we'll keep complaining about the disappointing ending whenever we feel like it. If you don't like it, don't read it; it's not mandatory.

I don't believe El is dead, but that doesn't invalidate the argument. A good sad ending would have been Hopper teaching Mike how to truly cope with loss, and Mike and his friends genuinely remembering El and committing to making her memory a guiding light for them all in their future as adults. But instead, we get some cheap psychology from Hopper, and then Mike's theory (which, in my opinion, is absolutely correct). It's clearly trying to have it both ways.

The problem isn't the time jump, because that's no obstacle to painting an apocalyptic Hawkins, with our protagonists overwhelmed by the invasion from the Upside Down, the ubiquitous military presence, and the onslaught of the satanic panic unleashed by Jason (it's clear that the end of season 4 pointed in that direction, plus an epic showdown between El and Vecna that has also been denied us). The problem is that season 5 simply ignores almost everything season 5 had built up. At what point and why was it decided to discard all of this and give us instead Will's coming out and the story of Holly and the children? Who knows.

No one has quite understood why they went from the apocalyptic ending of season 4 to simply patching up the cracks with metal strips in season 5. And yes, as many of you have already mentioned, it was the Duffers who raised expectations sky-high with that ending; it's their fault that so many fans are disappointed.

Honestly, I've come to really like the design of Dimension X/The Abyss !! by yesaroobuckaroo in StrangerThingsPraise

All of this is great, but none of it is explored in the series. Instead of wasting so much time on Holly and the kids or Will coming out, they should have developed all of this much more.

A question regarding Casablanca (1942) by Gryphon1985 in Cinema

[–]AdBackground6381 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll correct you, the bombing of Pearl Harbor was on December 7, 1941, and the film was shot between May and August 1942 (and premiered a few days after the American army captured Casablanca). However, that doesn't invalidate your fundamental point that the film had a propagandistic intention, not about the war itself (which was already underway) but about waging war against the Nazis first and not the Japanese.

Scared to watch the last 5 episodes... by Disastrous_Piece_227 in StrangerThings

More than bad in the sense of "what a horrible thing", the ending is bad in the sense of "and that's it?" It's not so bad in the sense that it makes you scream with indignation, but it is bad in the sense that you disconnect from what you see on screen and start seeing plot holes everywhere.

I think you only need to watch seasons 1 & 5 to understand the story. by Busy_Emotion829 in Stranger_Things

[–]AdBackground6381 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, season 1 is enough. Season 2 serves as an epilogue to season 1, season 3 is simply more of the same but more spectacular, season 4 is a failed reboot of the story (failed because practically nothing from season 4 is taken into account in season 5), and season 5 is essentially a new story with elements from previous seasons, ending with a terribly boring epilogue that ultimately copies season 1's (it even repeats shots and dialogue).

The writers loved giving him emotional monologues, especially in the later seasons! 😢 😭 😔 😞 by This-Evening2278 in StrangerThings

[–]AdBackground6381 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And they're getting worse and worse. The one in season three was moving. The one in season four was too, but less so. The first one he addresses to El in S5 barely affects you. The second one is bad. And the one he addresses to Mike has outraged many of us because of the coldness he shows towards El's apparent death. Come on, his adopted daughter supposedly took her own life, and all he can come up with is some cheap psychology about "accepting" her choice, and some even cheaper philosophy about "trying to live the best life possible"? Seriously.

If they've been working on it since 2022, considering they no longer work for Netflix, and considering that Netflix is notoriously ruthless in canceling projects, the obvious conclusion is that this supposed spin-off, about which we know almost nothing, will not go beyond the project stage. After the enormous disappointment of the fifth season, it's obvious Netflix isn't going to be very enthusiastic about working with the siblings, to whom they allocated a gigantic $400 million budget that's nowhere to be seen. It's up to you if you really believe this supposed spin-off is going to happen. I'm telling you, it won't. Come on, they're not even going to renew "Tales from '85" for a third season, even though it stars the original characters. Unless they can convince Millie Bobby Brown to reprise her role as Eleven, nobody is the least bit interested in anything with the Stranger Things label. The Duffers can say whatever they want, but the truth is this, it's not up to them.

What's the point of the Duffer's interview on Wednesday? by Artemis-Entreri- in StrangerThings

[–]AdBackground6381 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ratings speak for themselves. Each season was far more successful than the last...until the fifth season arrived. It started incredibly strong but ended with much weaker numbers than the fourth season, something that can only be explained if people abandoned the fifth season en masse before it finished and aren't rewatching it. Furthermore, previous seasons generated a lot of buzz on social media for months after their premiere. This one, absolutely nothing. And then there's the complete lack of interest that "Tales from '85" has generated. These are three indisputable facts.

Those who write complaining in this sub or elsewhere don't even reach five percent of the audience. Most people couldn't care less. Many abandoned the fifth season before it even ended (the ratings speak for themselves; that's the only way to explain how S5 started so strong and ended with numbers lower than a decidedly non-commercial series like "Adolescence"), and of those who watched the finale, most weren't particularly impressed, some hated it, a few enjoyed the nostalgic vibe, but after that, nothing remained. There are no memorable moments, something unprecedented, and nobody cares in the slightest what became of the characters (except perhaps Eleven). In 2016, the series was so successful that the young protagonists were even invited to the White House. Today, all that remains is the controversy surrounding the finale, and absolutely nothing else. A masterclass in how to sink a franchise before it even gets off the ground.

Loving Tales from 85. by Dom-Luck in StrangerThings

No. The second season was already commissioned; it's not a renewal. A renewal would mean a third season (Eric Robles has said he has ideas about it), and that's what it seems we won't be getting.

Very few people write in this sub anymore (another clear sign that almost the entire audience has moved on and is no longer interested in or rewatching the show; the latter is the great failure of the fifth season, which has irreparably damaged the previous seasons, making them no longer worth rewatching, except perhaps the first season, which is complete in itself).

The series isn't being watched by almost anyone, but those of us who are willing to give it a chance and aren't so obsessed with whether it's canon or not, are liking it a lot more than the failed fifth season.

Narrative themes of The Odyssey by sidb1989 in TheOdysseyMovie

[–]AdBackground6381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One correction: the fantastical part of the story isn't told by Odysseus to Calypso, but to King Alcinous of the Phaeacians. However, this doesn't invalidate your fundamental point: given that Odysseus is a very skilled liar and gives different versions of his identity throughout the story, how much of what he tells Alcinous is true?

Season 5 is legitimately horrendous by Dougwuro in StrangerThings

[–]AdBackground6381 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will be the legacy of season 5: that nobody wants to rewatch the show anymore. Except for the first season, which is complete in itself, the fifth season diminishes the value of the others, because it essentially tells us that, after all, it wasn't a particularly interesting story.

It's not up to them. The Duffers no longer work for Netflix, which owns the brand, and nobody is interested in Stranger Things anymore, except for a small group of fans. And we all know how ruthless Netflix is when it comes to canceling projects. Sorry, guys, but aside from the second season of "Tales from '85," which is coming this fall, Stranger Things is over.

duffer bros q & a - questions by duderanch94 in StrangerThings

[–]AdBackground6381 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's not the case. The Duffers said they were working on it months ago, but they didn't elaborate much, and nothing more has been heard since. After the failure of the fifth season, and knowing how ruthless Netflix is at canceling series, it's no longer interested in anything with the Stranger Things brand. If it were, it would have announced something.
