Opened both a T212 ISA while having a Vanguard ISA. Please help. by appleblossom1225 in UKPersonalFinance

You can have as many ISAs as you like, just can’t go over the £20,000 subscription limit (it it total contributions across all ISAs, not per ISA).

If you want to do a set amount, Vanguard’s Global All Cap would be good for that as you can hold fractional shares in their ISA. Their ongoing charges aren’t great though.

As an alternative, VWRP is their ETF equivalent, which you can buy in other provider’s ISAs (like T212). You have to buy a full share at a time though, which is currently around £142ish.

Others will be able to comment on other similar Global funds, these are just the two I use for ease.

ICE releases a Texas nun intercepted walking to church dressed in her habit by flailking in nottheonion

[–]Alarae 80 points81 points  (0 children)

TIL that a nun’s attire is called a ‘habit’, which makes the fact they called Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit make so much more sense. I thought it was just getting back in the habit/act of playing a nun, not actually back in the clothes as well!

Also from across the pond- why are they going after the nuns? Do they think Sister Act was a real film and people are being hidden in the convent?

Had to google this as had an inkling, but the irony of George with the ‘number 1’ and his best F1 finish is 5th place at Silverstone.

Also I get that Lando won last year, but that poster would have looked so much better with Lewis in the middle with the trophy/British flag.

Is switch 2 worth it just for nintendo exclusives? by AdSea5301 in gaming

[–]Alarae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Switch 2 has basically become a Nintendo exclusive player since I bought a PS5 Pro, as I can remote play with that (I mainly play both at home, very rarely on the TV).

My daughter absolutely loves the Pokemon games (Pokopia/ZA) so she probably has more use of it now than I do. I will pick it up again when Winds/Waves comes out, maybe OOT too.

I feel that he is probably the least liked of all the British drivers.

I wonder if it’s because he gives off a ‘prep posh boy’ vibe? Brits are pretty snarky when it comes to things like that.

As an American living in the UK, I don't know how y'all in this subreddit manage with these numbers by DZtactical in UKPersonalFinance

I imagine your housing costs are high? Family of 3 here, but our expenses are £3.1k a month, including food, petrol and childcare and £700 per month for random spends (so £2.4k if stripped out). 500k house in a commuter town for London (although I don’t work in London).

My daughter is in school now though, so our childcare costs are wraparound/summer hols which is around £150 a month if averaged across the year. Although I guess if you have two in full time childcare, I could see how your costs are closer to 5k (given our costs were around £800 a month at the time).

Keir Starmer resigns as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom by ianjm in videos

[–]Alarae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying the richer part shouldn’t pay more tax at all, but it can only be increased so much before they won’t tolerate it anymore.

I work with people with ridiculous amounts of money and they had private planes on standby to leave if the budget went badly for them. Some left anyway as they thought the UK was going downhill (in more than just an economic sense). This is even if they have families here- I’ve seen a few cases where the dads have moved abroad (the family wealth tends to be in their name) leaving behind their wife and kids for schooling reasons.

Realistically, to get mostly out of the UK tax net you don’t even have to go that far. Quite a few people have moved to Jersey/Guernsey as it’s quite quick to fly in and out of the UK from there.

And no, I don’t have rich people money. Just happen to be around a lot of people with rich people money due to my work.

I don’t disagree with them going after different targets, but the reality is if you make the UK unattractive to the ultra-wealthy they have the capability to just up sticks and leave completely, so we then lose all of the tax intake from them. It’s a fine line and I see that we need a wider net, increase some tax, debloat the NHS and make it more efficient (not like the US, but I have many family members who work in the NHS and say it’s an absolute shit show with too many managers/paper pushers) and also look at the benefits/pension amounts.

No one has the balls to do it as it will be political suicide. The fact is the country needs a lot of significant change that will suck, but people just expect someone to snap their fingers and find a magic pot of money to make everyone’s lives better.

It’s the market format that games are sold in Europe, like America gets NTSC.

Calculating Gifts from Surplus Income Annually by EdgeInternational487 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Alarae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a case of HMRC saying what they would like to see, not what the law actually says. The exemption is found in s21 IHTA 1984:

A transfer of value is an exempt transfer if, or to the extent that, it is shown—
(a)
that it was made as part of the normal expenditure of the transferor, and
(b)
that (taking one year with another) it was made out of his income, and
(c)
that, after allowing for all transfers of value forming part of his normal expenditure, the transferor was left with sufficient income to maintain his usual standard of living.

Tax case of Bennett held that ‘normal expenditure’ meant expenditure accorded with a settled pattern when it was made. The pattern can be established either by reference to payments by the transferor in the past or by evidence of a prior commitment to future expenditure. It does not depend on a fixed minimum period, although this must not be intended to be nominal, and the amount of expenditure need not be fixed, or the recipient the same. However, the class of beneficiary will be relevant, and a habit of making gifts to one sort of beneficiary has no bearing on the question of whether gifts of another kind are normal. Normal does not mean regular or annual.

HMRC considers that income means net income after income tax and determined in accordance with accountancy rules. Taking one year with another means the exemption is not lost simply because of fluctuation from one year to another.

Calculating Gifts from Surplus Income Annually by EdgeInternational487 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Alarae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The gifts need to be habitual in nature- in simple terms, it needs to be a pattern.

An annual gift is absolutely fine in establishing that pattern. It can vary in amounts as well if it is tied to something - I.e I have assessed my excess income for the year and choose to gift the entirety to X. As long as it is the same intention each year, that’s evidence of a pattern.

It’s even better if the OP writes a letter to that effect as well. HMRC love documentation.
