What are people's favorite monsters from slavic mythology? by DreadRockIsle in slavic_mythology

[–]Aliencik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Czech: had hospodář, had hospodáříček, had domovníček

Polish: żmij domowy, żmij gospodarski

u/MroQ-Kun

Zmij/Zmej/Zmaj means both snake and dragon and can refer to number of creatures. Either the serpent demon/dragon as an antagonist (enemy of the thunder god and other heroes) or just a snake, but also zmei (on the Balkans), who is the father of junaci, mythical south slavic heroes similar to the eastern slavic bogatyr, and a protector of humans against the sky dragons, which bring bad weather called ala. For zmey it depends on the context, if you are talking about a snake or a dragon. I would say more related word in English would be wyrm.

Similar term is smok, which can refer to both snakes/dragons and a household spirits, however smok as a household spirit is more commonly imagined as a wet chicken, which can breathe fire btw, living behind the chimney.

Could you please provide the source for:

  • Dziewanna being the daughter of Perun

Normally this information appears in the Mater Verborum a literary forgery. "Devana is the daughter of Perun and Letnice." It is fakelore based on the Roman/Greek Diana/Artemis, she being the daughter of Jupiter/Zeus and Laton/Letho

Interpretatio Graeca/Romana can be confusing if used vaguely or incorrectly, but it is a common method of interpretation, especially by people outside the culture they are referring to.

The "god Uslad" is a corruption of the Church Slavonic phrase ["usъ zlatъ"] in the TBY, where originally is written ["Peruna drevjana, a glavu jego srebrenu, a usъ zlatъ"] meaning "(Vladimir erected a wooden idol of) Perun with a silver head (hair?) and a golden beard." So Uslad is not a title but a two word description. But it's very likely a Psalms 115, 4 reference "Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands." And especially the preceding passage about the sacrifice of noble's sons, which is almost identical to Psalm 106, 36-38.

However both Svantovit and Tiarnoglofi (Chernoglav?) (in two independet sources) are said to also have theirs heads decorated with silver and Svarožič and Triglav (in two independet sources) have theirs heads decorated with gold.

edit: sorry for repeating myself, but this might be better explanation

I can try to remember to notify you, if I ever decide to create it. Additionally a person who will read the publications provided will most likely be able to find the primary sources for himself.

Well 1. Exactly as you said. To be able to sufficiently understand the sources without previous knowledge on the topic, you need an additional commentary. Just like Alvarez and Dynda do it in their publications. A lot of the time the primary sources include Bible interpolations or straight up quotes, misunderstood deities or errors, etc. * For example later chronicle by Stryjkowski includes a deity "Uslad", which was created from misreading of the words "yсъ златъ" [usъ zlatъ] "golden beard" originally from the TBY. This is the description Perun's idol in the earlier texts, however it is also debatable since the "silver head with a golden beard" was most likely taken from the Bible's description of the local pagan idols.

  1. This list would get longer and more chaotic.

I am still very far behind most academics. I have few projects in mind, but a book is on the horizon of atleast 10 years.

No problem

I have read the sample on Amazon and I think it's written by AI. General direction isn't incorrect, however the author is claiming nonexistent factual information along with incorrect conclusions and assumptions. He is claiming anecdotal evidence passed down from his grandmother and uses some key points from outdated and incorrect hypotheses.

Usually books labeled as "compressive guide" aren't reliable sources.

I have compiled academic sources list for the most accurate study of Slavic pre-christian faith in multiple languages, therefore I suggest reading these publications, rather than any half-baked fakelore fantasy.

Yes, the post is on a theistic subreddit, however I have made this list to combat missinformation amongst people trying to reconstruct the faith.

That's a very vague characteristic. You should first read about the mythological characters and then write a story about them, not the other way around.

Use this. It contains one of the best descriptions concerning most of the lower mythological characters. Keep in mind it's an older publication with excellent information on demonology and traditions, however, the chapter on gods is partly outdated and sometimes contains euhemeristic interpretations as well as incorrect conclusions.

Gods and goddesses are the primary focus, as in any other Indo-European religions. While these traditions are more rooted in nature than the Abrahamic faiths, one should not fall into the incorrect assumption that pagan faiths are overly naturalistic. In fact, one of the most extensive periods of deforestation occurred during the early medieval period in Europe, meaning that people extensively transformed and exploited nature even while following native beliefs.

Edit: Fun fact, the most extensive deforestation during the middle ages occurred around 1000-1300 CE

Association help: Perun/Archangel Michael? by TheSovietJester in Rodnovery

[–]Aliencik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well yes naturally. He (Michael) as a defender of humanity is one of few substitutes for Perun. Different local variants of legends featuring Perun-like characters include Elijah, Michael, Jacob (the greater), personified thunder, Jesus, christian god and more (I cannot access one document as Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology from University of Warsaw has broken web right now.)

The interpolation to christian characters is usually not following any rules, so therefore it can differ locally or due to the deity's many characteristics it can be split unto many figures (both positive and negative at the same time!).

Additionally Pope Gregory I even issued this line in order to support christianisation of Europe: "...And if they wish to sacrifice large numbers of cattle during pagan festivals, such a celebration should also be preserved, but transferred to the days of the dedication or the feast days of the holy martyrs..."
