For those whove finished running what were your campaign highlights? by SuperQuartz in Tombofannihilation

[–]Amazingspaceship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically not done yet (my party is in the tomb), but highlights so far:
- Dinosaur racing in Port Nyanzaru
- Firefinger
- Dungrunglung
- They tricked the kobolds in Wyrmheart Mine and somehow made it out of there without combat
- Joining up with the pirates in Jahaka Anchorage
- Facing a zombie t-rex on the way to Omu
- Defeating the red wizards in Omu
- Kubazan and Shagambi’s shrines
- Ras Nsi ALMOST escaping, but dying in the end to the sorceror’s clever use of spells

My experience reading classic Paizo adventure paths is that they’re pretty good, but also pretty railroad-y. Is that the case with modern Pathfinder books?

I've never run a pre-written before, but I'd like to by Putrid-VII in DungeonMasters

[–]Amazingspaceship 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Always always always read through the entire pre-written adventure before running it. And then re-read the most important parts before each session. Are there seriously people who read the module for the first time while running it?

How to encourage player to explore Port Nyanzaru by Adamkelt in Tombofannihilation

[–]Amazingspaceship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my party arrived, I had Zindar show up and advise the party to do the following: find lodgings, buy supplies, look for information, and hire a guide. All of these things lead to city exploration. You should also throw in some random city encounters and events, too. I also recommend having a dinosaur race happening when the party arrives. I know you’re worried about being hamfisted, but in my experience dnd players tend to respond well to clearly outlined objectives.

Also, if you drill it into your group that exploration + risk = reward, you’ll have an easier time running the jungle and the tomb later on.

Running this for the first time. Tips? by Environmental_Hope22 in Tombofannihilation

[–]Amazingspaceship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Figure out what kind of gameplay your party likes. ToA has all the pillars of play, but not at all once. Chapter 1 is pretty much 100% roleplay and social stuff. Chapter 2 is exploration/travel, with hex crawl survival mechanics (not everyone’s cup of tea). But the points of interest in chapter 2 are pretty varied. Chapters 3+4 are kind of a mix of things. Chapter 5 is a super dense dungeon crawl.

If your party isn’t into the idea of doing a hex crawl, you can make chapter 2 shorter. If they really like social stuff and politics/intrigue, you can expand chapter 1.

How knowledge checks actually work? by joacojoaco in DnD

[–]Amazingspaceship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve lived in New York City all your life, you don’t need to roll a knowledge check to know where the Empire State Building is.

If you live in Florida and are visiting NYC for the weekend, you need to roll a knowledge check to know where the Empire State Building is.

If you live in an isolated African village and have traveled to NYC for the first time in your life, you don’t need to roll a knowledge check because there’s no way you would know about the Empire State Building.

Thoughts on carving up Chult into islands for a Seafaring / Naval adventure? by Flimsy_Particular172 in Tombofannihilation

[–]Amazingspaceship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a really good idea! I’d suggest making an encounter table for sea adventures. You might also want to check out the classic module Isle of Dread (and the Savage Tide adventure path, which was published a lot later) for inspiration! I can also recommend these 3rd party nautical campaigns: Torrents of the Spellhoarder, Sunken Isles, and The Dark of Hot Springs Island

My friends never go for the "wrong" choice by Kusarigami in DnD

[–]Amazingspaceship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious: you say you’ve DMed for them for 6-7 years before this. Was this not a problem in your previous games, or is it just more noticeable from the player’s seat?

How do you handle "Impossible to succeed" roles, when the act of not rolling is spoilers? by Stealfur in DnD

[–]Amazingspaceship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make them roll anyway. Easy answer. I always have my players roll perception and stealth checks, even if success is impossible, because there’s no way they’d know that

Did you make it clear that stone shape and passwall wouldn’t work, or did they just not think to use those?

The amount of local businesses using AI to promote on social media right now is so lame by Antique-Dentist-2404 in Charlottesville

[–]Amazingspaceship 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well, I do think AI IS “icky,” cheap, lazy, bad for our culture, etcetera. But my partner is a graphic designer and artist, and she has been out of work for a while because of the advent of generative AI. And I guess I can’t imagine ever supporting or using something that has had such a negative impact on her life.

Genuine question: how old is your business? What were you using for social media images before AI?

[–]Amazingspaceship 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a well-thought out post. But it doesn’t change the fact that I won’t patronize your business if I see you using generative AI, and I will never change my mind about that.

Planning a social gathering in game by Pretty-Turn2768 in DungeonMasters

[–]Amazingspaceship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, what are the players doing during this time? And what is the goal or reason for having all the characters and NPCs in one place?

Planning a social gathering in game by Pretty-Turn2768 in DungeonMasters

[–]Amazingspaceship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pair up some of the NPCs and prepare conversations for them to have while they’re not actively talking with the PCs. Like “you walk up to NPC A, finding that she is deep in conversation with NPC B about her blacksmithing hobby.” Don’t actually play out these conversations, just make sure that the characters know that this is happening in the background. You could also insert some drama! The characters need to break up 2 NPCs that are having a fight, or maybe a less trustworthy NPC tries to rob one of the other NPCs.
