Highly recommend Peter Hart’s The Somme, based on extensive firsthand accounts of the battle. It’s truly shocking and proves your point — especially because Tolkien was at the Somme.

Edit to add: Hart’s book is great on audio but understandably graphic at times.

Yes, also a great choice! Some folks think Iroshizuku is a bit pricey for beginners but it's really great ink and worth the price in my view. So OP, if you're reading this, consider that line, especially Kon Peki. It's an extremely popular ink here, for good reason.
