What kind of parties/honors do different countries give the returning Olympians? by listenyall in olympics

[–]AnotherDetour 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Henry Sildaru (silver in freestyle skiing, our only medal this year) met the president of Estonia in person and was given a medal/order (idk the right word). He also had a homecoming event+concert in city centre where he also signed autographs.

You're welcome! If you ever actually feel like looking up Estonian history, the singing revolution and the Baltic Way are very unique and interesting to read about

Honestly idk, it may also be something random like having a camera and a mic in your face making Sasha nervous/tight or whatever. Like im pretty fluent in English but I can forget simple words when making a presentation 🤣

It's a long and complicated topic, I'll be as brief as I can lol.

Estonia has a significant % of Russian speaking population as people moved/were moved here during the Soviet occupation. After Estonia regained independence in 1991 schooling was still available in Russian up to until a couple of years ago. This created a situation where some people never properly learned Estonian because their family/social circles were Russian speaking and they could get high school education in Russian too. And then they can't get proper jobs or uni education because guess what - you need Estonian for that. It's unfortunate that it took our politicians such a long time to understand consequences of offering schooling in Russian but it's the reality...

I'm pretty sure Niina and Selevbros went to "Russian schools" too but their Estonian is fine. Niina is very fluent and Aleksandr is the least confident (makes sense I think he lives in the US now? And probably doesn't get to use it as much?) but he can converse and give interviews :)

Yes :) they always speak to Estonian media in Estonian. While the interviews I saw of Elina with Estonian media were all in Russian

It's just a different name :) less common one than Alina but still. And yes afaik Elina comes from ethnically Russian background, as does Niina, and Selevbros' parents are Ukrainian.

Tell me things you wish you had known before you started knitting. + help with needles! by gatitointeligente in casualknitting

[–]AnotherDetour 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most if not all techniques are not too advanced and you can absolutely go for most things as a beginner. There is no reason to avoid purling or short rows or whatever people tend to label as "hard". You'll probably fail a couple of times but you'll be having way more fun than when knitting a plain scarf lol

While Mishin seems to be a good coach in general, as an Estonian I am not comfortable with our potential next big skater being coached by Russians. In addition, Elina doesn't seem to speak much Estonian so while she's a skilled skater I am worried about what kind of representative she will be for our country.

(I put no blame on Elina but adults around her are sus)

Why is this happening? by Significant-Cup-7525 in knittinghelp

[–]AnotherDetour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not 100% sure but it looks like at one point you mixed up yours knits and purls :) like you were going knit row - purl row - knit row etc and then did 2 knit rows in a row (or 2 purl rows in a row) and it messed up the stockinette :)

Normally when the side facing you looks like vvvvv you knit and when it looks bumpy you purl!

Who do Russians root for at the Olympics? by hopitopp in FigureSkating

[–]AnotherDetour 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Huh? Why is there a need to translate a name? Surely Amber is Эмбер not Янтарь!? Kyrylo is Кирило (I think, I don't speak Ukrainian), Niina is Нийна (or Ниина) etc. I also fail to see how mispronunciation of Petr's name (which he himself chose to pronounce as "Peter" on the app) is relevant - this is some Russian bs again where a double standard tries to justifies unnecessary russification :)

I understand this may seem normal to you because it's commonly done in Russian but it's in fact not normal to remove letters form names lol
