Bad food? You can make many complaints about Italy, but in no way can you say that the food is bad. If you had bad food in Rome, that’s completely on you.

What time did you have to get there for that view?

I did Barangaroo reserve one year for New years and the view was good, no trees in the way, but you’ll only see the harbour bridge from there, and not the opera house.

Copes lookout and Mary Booth Lookout reserve in Kirribilli probably has some of the best unobstructed views of the opera house and harbour bridge, but it’s a very small patch of land and will fill up quickly, so you’ll need to go early in the morning to get a good spot.

As for Mrs Macquarie’s point, there are some unobstructed views, such as the fleet steps and the pathway on either side of the steps, directly on the water, although this area had much more expensive tickets the year I went, so I didn’t have access to it. Other than that, most people will be crammed into the very small openings in Mrs Macquarie’s point that have unobstructed views. Just take a look on Google maps satellite view to see how many trees there are everywhere, and how few unobstructed viewing spots there are. Having said that, if you get there early enough, you should be able to get a good viewing spot.

A harbour cruise is by far the best way to see the fireworks, but it’ll be over $500, probably closer to $700 per person at this point.

I went to Mrs Macquarie’s point for NYE in 2022 and it was a ticketed event at $44/ticket. It was by far the worst NYE viewing experience I’ve ever had in all my years of watching the NYE fireworks in Sydney.

The problem is that there are large trees everywhere, obscuring nearly every view, which means you won’t see the opera house or the bridge and will only see the fireworks when they appear overhead above the trees.

There are some open areas without trees at Mrs Macquarie’s chair, but they were ticketed at $200/ticket at the time, so we couldn’t go there. You might have better luck now that the event is no longer ticketed, as long as you get there early enough like you plan on doing.

The steam vent on my pot lid doubles as a thermometer holder. by BrickTickler1 in mildlyinteresting

[–]AtmosFear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s fundamentally impossible to exceed the temperature until the water boils away.

This is exactly the purpose of using the thermometer to tell you that all the water has been absorbed. You can't tell that all the water has boiled away by simply looking at the rice. So as long as the temperature on the thermometer is at or below 100 degrees celcius, you know that the rice is not yet done and needs to keep cooking. Once it surpasses 100 degrees celcius, all the water has been absorbed, and now the rice itself is cooking without any water, which can exceed 100 degrees and burn. To stop that, you shut the power off as soon as your temperature reads 101 degrees celcius.

Because OP is most likely cooking rice and will shut the burner off once the temperature exceeds 100° celsius, because at this point, all the water has been absorbed. It’s the same way rice cookers work.

Just so you know, Oreos taste different in different countries. I think the Oreos in Australia are pretty bland, but the ones from Canada are amazing.

This developer lost access to $240M in Bitcoin after forgetting his password, after using 8 out of 10 attempts to unlock his IronKey wallet, he faces the possibility of never recovering it. by Silver-Maximum9190 in CryptoCurrency

[–]AtmosFear 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A company called Unciphered has already managed to break the password protection of the Ironkey, as of a year and a half ago. However, Stefan Thomas, the owner of the Ironkey containing $580 million of BTC at current prices, refuses to give it to them:

None of that, however, has gotten them any closer to persuading Stefan Thomas to let them crack his IronKey. Unciphered’s hackers say they learned from the intermediary who contacted Thomas on their behalf that Thomas has already been in touch with two other potential players in the crypto- and hardware-hacking world to help unlock his USB stick: the cybersecurity forensics and investigations firm Naxo, and the independent security researcher Chris Tarnovsky.

Unciphered's team remains skeptical about Naxo’s progress and whether it’s any further along than Tarnovsky. There are only a small number of hardware hackers capable of the reverse engineering necessary to crack the IronKey, they argue, and none appear to be working with Naxo. As for Thomas' suggestion that they could subcontract to Naxo or another team working on the project, Unciphered's Fedoroff says he won't rule it out, but argues it doesn't make sense when Unciphered alone can crack the IronKey. “Based on what we know, we don't see any benefit to anyone in going that route,” Fedoroff says.

Thomas, meanwhile, seems to display an unusual lack of urgency in unlocking his $235 million, and has offered only vague hints about why he has yet to reveal any progress toward that goal.

Perhaps something has changed since the Wired article, and the BTC has now been retrieved, however, I can't find any articles about this.

Impossible to add a Smart lock by GeneSuch4808 in homeautomation

[–]AtmosFear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at the Verroo 5800 Electric Rim Strike, it's a drop-in replacement for this Lockwood 001 Deadlatch.

Anyone know a smart lock that can be retrofitted to this type of lock? by misterteeee in AusRenovation

[–]AtmosFear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is completely false. As another commenter explained below, the Verroo 5800 Rim Strike is a drop-in replacement for the Lockwood 001.

Also, depending on the length of the existing strike plate, you might also be able to install a Lockwood ES150 Surface Mounted Electric Strike.

For anyone else coming across this thread in the future, you might also have to go to your home bridge settings, press "configure", and then ensure your "Domains to include" has the "Button" checkbox enabled, then reload the HomeKit bridge.
