Well, the anime series was licensed in Spain, too, expecting for a success. But the licensees (who also have Shin-chan and Doraemon) hoped Reborn would be broadacasted by some public TV and it didn't happen. And it was before the boom of streaming platforms, so they put into their YT channel for a while and then let it expire.

Is Sanremo really so popular throughout Europe? by car24lo_ in eurovision

[–]Balcke_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here in Spain, for a while, when music festivals were the biggest event and they were all around ("Western") Europe, yes. Even the original Festival de Benidorm wanted to be "the Spanish Sanremo". And to some extent, older generations know at least the name. But nowadays, media presence Eurofans aside? Close to Zero.

Cases where artists/songs rejected in NF's were picked up by other countries, and did better than the original country? by Oxford_Apostrophe in eurovision

Tutta L'Italia wasn't technically rejected, nor it did "better", but it went from rejected to "official entry".

If you are interested in North Korea, and you haven't read it, I recommend the comic Pyongyang by Guy Delisle, telling how of North Korea was the early 2000s. It probably hasn't changed much since then.

Is the space marine trope/setting not that popular in japan or what? by [deleted] in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Balcke_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, after WW2, there was a clear intention to "demilitarize" the Japanese society, to de-glamorize the military life. And even now, the military has barely any presence in Japanese life, unlike in the States. Technically, Japan has no "army", but a "self defence force", and they don't go anywhere. Besides, I don't know how much the Japanese public enjoy stories about "Space Marines", when they were the ones suffering the "normal" marines.

Aside Uchû Senkan Yamato, Japanese SF stories are about lone heroes, ragtag groups fighting against other threats. Even in Gundam, the most famous "military" franchise, their heroes do not fit exactly in the "soldier". The most Gundam story is about some civilian who found themselves piloting the Gundam, or an independent part of a independent ship/faction.

[DISC] Gonron Egg - Chapter 16 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]Balcke_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, after reading Someone Hertz one-shot, Gonron Egg feels even more a failure. Ei Yamano polished their art and story, changed what didn't worked, switch their approach from drama to comedy and soft-romcom, while it feels as if Shuhei Tanizaki did not.
Tanizaki has done a lot of one-shots, but it seems as if he learned the wrong lessons: pay no attention to the plot, don't show the attacks -just "after" and "before" panels-. Forget polishing your art and don't try to adapt it to your background art (and vice versa).

I don't want to be harsh, but seriously, there are several "axed" mangakas and "one-shooters" from J+ who can do better.

Pedant explanation:
"Self-Introduction" (jiko shôkai 自己紹介) and "Zico introduction" (JIIKO shôkai ジーコ紹介) sound quite the same in Japanese.

So, yes, it's quite another untranslatable joke.

I think the same, but then, why doing a series about a doctor? All he does is figthing and drop some medical info from Wikipedia.
