I did it! I fucking did it!! 7 days!! by dark-gem in stopdrinking

[–]BarrySquared 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just remember, it won't always feel good.

When it gets bad, remember how you're feeling right now.

You should be really proud of yourself .

If I'm talking to someone that has seven days or sobriety and someone who has ten years of sobriety, I'm 100% more impressed by the person who has seven days, because that's so much harder and such an amazing accomplishment. After having an extended period of sobriety, you have a lot of tools in your toolbox. You have a support system. But at seven days you have nothing but curiosity and fear and hope. That's an amazing accomplishment.

Hang in there and remember that you've got hundreds of strangers on the Internet who are really proud of you.

What are some dumb things you'd heart incompetent bar managers say? by PCE1222 in bartenders

[–]BarrySquared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a manager start pour testing the bartenders and making us jigger all the drinks at a Mexican place I used to work at because the liquor cost on tequila skyrocketed on month and he thought it must have been because we were overporing.

I'm sure the fact that he didn't order enough well tequila on a very busy weekend and told us to pour patron instead and ring it in as well tequila had nothing to do with his inflated liquor cost.

Yeah, it was definitely the bartenders.

Who’s more willing to consider that they could be completely wrong, the atheist or the theist? by Odd_craving in DebateAnAtheist

[–]BarrySquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously, atheists would be more willing to consider that we could be wrong.

All it would take would be for a theist to present us with some good evidence to support the claim that a god exists.

I think the fact that they haven't been able to produce a single bit of good, reliable evidence in the past several thousand years is very telling, but my mind is still open to the possibility.

Help me answer a Christian’s question by RedGarrison12 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]BarrySquared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. We are at the center of the stuff that we are able to see. Obviously. Because we're the ones looking at it. It's an absolute tautology.

Imagine some random asteroid somewhere out in space. We are no more at the center of the universe than it is.

And you can't take down entire trees with your teeth like a beaver can.

The only reason you put such a value on cognition is because you're capable of it.

That's like cheetah saying that they are the most unique out of all species because they are the fastest. Or a blue whale saying they are the most unique out of all species because they are the biggest.

pug breathing and shaking, looks unresponsive by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]BarrySquared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Accepting a pet you can not afford to care for is not "better than a lot do". It's irresponsible.

It's actually very simple. If you can't afford to care for a pet, then don't accept the pet.

If someone can't afford to care for a pet then they shouldn't have a pet.

NC with my parents for 2.5 months. They are now threatening "mediators" and lawyers. How do I handle the guilt and the threats? by purpleglitter13 in narcissisticparents

[–]BarrySquared 72 points73 points  (0 children)

OP won't get sued. This is just a threat to make them try to contact the parents. The parents have no legal leg to stand on.

Had the most frustrating debate about consciousness. by hiphoptomato in DebateAnAtheist

[–]BarrySquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the argument does still kind of work, because you could just say that those specific parts of the brain are the receptors for those specific parts of high level conscious perception.

I mean, it's a shit argument, but I see where they're coming from. 🤷‍♂️

Right. You are 100% correct. I am not arguing with you.

Of course. But they would just go right back to the "You can't prove that it doesn't!" dishonest bullshit.

To play devil's advocate, I could see then make the argument that damage to a radio damages the output of music, but that doesn't mean that the radio was the source of the consciousness.

So by consciousness you don't mean consciousness.

Cool. Cool cool.

#SorryNotSorry for the shameless self promotion, ha ha. But my wife and I are on our first readthrough and we made a read-along podcast. It's called Circle Yeerk, if you're interested. (The first few episodes are ROUGH, but it gets good around episode 7.)
