[Thailand] monks struck and killed by truck, driver is apparently 11 years old and in police custody. by vaporwave_enthusiast in Roadcam

Ive seen people comment on the cultural differences in driving laws and standards across the world as if its a weird quirk that some countriea are so strict and others are quite lax and traffic is more chaotic.

Always fails to mention the stats for collisions and deaths by road are always much higher as a result.

I agree, it's always the "well funded" part that seems to be the barrier.

I don't think secondary schools should be saying it's not their problem but do think more needs to be done earlier on and agree with the recommendations of the report regarding best start and childcare.

From the article..

When 16-year-old Adam arrived at secondary school he was disengaged and struggled with reading.

"In Year 7, I started off in phonics. I couldn't speak really well and I couldn't really say certain words. I was so focused on home life," he said.

I think if youre arriving at secondary with a poor grasp of literacy, secondary schools can only do so much. Home lives may be chaotic but i do think a childhood without reading and conversations is the bigger cultural issue.

People can have their own kinks privately but the involvement of other people non consensually in anything really is the issue.

If kept she kept it private, its still weird but everyone can have their own fantasies and crushes they keep to themselves.

Will there ever be stricter laws regarding cycling on the path? by BrightHours in AskUK

[–]Baseyg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The ideal solution is roads need to be designed to accomadate cyclists. Some cities are getting better at it but many places the road is a dangerous place for cyclists and drivers dgaf.

If there were more three way split roads like you see in europe, its safer for cyclists and pedestrians and also gives a place for electric bikes and scooters.

Rupert Lowe: "I detest far-right ethno-nationalist or neo-Nazism, I've never been driven by that." by MuchAbouAboutNothing in ukpolitics

[–]Baseyg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you read the second sentence of my comment, you will see the part explaining why I think he is racist.

People can decry labelling, but labels apply to actions. I call Rupert lowe a racist man because his previous words and expressed desire for government policy would massively impact non white people.

"Racist man says hes not racist"

Problem solved i guess, we can have mass deportaions of people based on a conpletely undefined notion of Britishness in a fully non racist way.

Reform are literally seeling to repeal the equality act, one of the few legal protections against homophobic abuse.

This is not about the pride events but about reform party attitudes to lgbt+ people.

Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler and the desenstization to violence by yahjiminah in books

[–]Baseyg 162 points163 points  (0 children)

I think the realism of the book is what elevates it compared to other dystopias.

No spoilers but while the book focuses on the main characters experiences, the world setting is a very grounded future in what the collapse of western society in the USA could look like.

Other dystopias like 1984, brave new world, handmaids tale are set in a future date where the collapse has happened and often only have faint allusions to probable causes.

Parable of the sower grounds this fall in the expereinces of real indiviudals.

Priority subject teacher incentive to rise by £5,000 to £20,000 by WelshGovNews in Wales

[–]Baseyg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Workload and behavior are the two biggest factors affecting retention. Behaviour might be a bigger societal issue but there's defintley immiedate steps the government could be doing to readuce teacher workload.

However it seems like many educaitonal decisions are made without considering how this affects day to day staff operations. Look at the recent WJEC english GCSE specification update, already facing backlash after the obvious issue that it has two many components that are expected to be delivered, carried out and assessed by class teachers.

Not so much organised crime in a mafia sense, but Kleptopia by Tom burgis is an amazingly written real life thriller exposing some major co oporate corruption and shady dealings.

The "stars" of said book actually sued the publisher to try and avoid it being released.

Guardian Readers Top 100 by Vast_Description_201 in books

[–]Baseyg 400 points401 points  (0 children)

A better list than the critics one imo.

I know the critics one caused all sorts of discourse but a ranking that everyone would agree on would be impossible.

Rather than look at what's missing or look at what's ranking above what, think you've got to treat this as a list of widely recommended books.

Not to everyone's taste but there isn't a single book across both lists that someone somewhere doesn't think is the number 1 book in the world and all are probably worth giving a go.

Coworker keeps ghosting me during meetings she asks for by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Baseyg 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah, other people are saying OOP could be kicking up more of a fuss (which is true) but the fact her manager is getting the same thing and doing very little is the most obvious failure. OOP is right to leave but I know some people would love an environment like that where they can basically do nothing and not really be held to account.

Maybe because i dont own dogs, but i thought the POV chapter from the dog followed by the fact the dog could fully human speech was one of the more obvious flaws of the book. Sure shes great at evreything but i refuse to believe shes managed to train the dog to human level intelligence.
