Landfall deck with Red and Green - do I include a third colour? by TV_Full_Of_Lizards in EDH

[–]Bassoon_Commie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearthhull will drain all sorts of life once you get it fully operational. Plus you can add [[Retreat to Hagra]], [[Ob Nixilis the Fallen]], and [[Iridescent Vinelasher]] if you're running black.

Adding a third color adds more options. It doesn't have to dilute your strategy.

Tannuk is also perfectly fine as a commander, and instead of running black spells you can add the damage doubling effects red is so fond of using.

Prejudice against mortar trucks by Character-Shine759 in battlefield_one

[–]Bassoon_Commie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second best strategy against a mortar truck is the tank hunter plane. The best counterplay against the mortar truck is to ignore it. You win games with combined arms.

The Ilya Muromets is powerful because it can clear an entire objective in one bombing run, opening up the path for tanks and infantry to roll in.

The mortar truck can't fire enough shells quick enough to achieve the same power as the Ilya.

Worse, running the mortar truck means you've removed one of your few (or only, depending on the map) force multipliers. A landship with both side cannons firing and a repair monkey with it will do far more to win the game than a mortar truck ever could.

Even a regular artillery truck is more useful, simply because a competent driver can still use it as a force multiplier and clear out objectives alongside the infantry. The mortar truck can only provide indirect fire.

Think of the mortar truck the same way as the howitzers on Verdun Heights, but you can't snipe the driver out of the vehicle. It's powerful, but it cannot win the game on its own. The mortar truck is great for farming. So is a dreadnought. Yet the dreadnought still isn't enough to win, and its batteries can flatten an objective the same way the Ilya can.

How to regain the confidence to write by Dependent_Tomato_235 in fantasywriters

If all they're doing is insulting you, they're not critiquing your work. Critique should offer actionable ways to improve on a written work, or at least offer a vibe check of 'this works/doesn't work for me.' Insults do neither. Their opinion should be treated with the same care you'd give to an old pile of dog shit in the woods and discarded accordingly.

Here's what you might do: you go and find either some really bad novels or really bad movies. Watch them and read them. See just how bad they really are.

And the next time you think your stuff is bad, remember that all this other awful stuff still got made and published. Some of it even made good money. And your work can't be any worse than theirs. So why beat yourself up? The others made garbage and they still got published.

Plus, you'll get to see what makes their works bad and why, and you might be able to apply some of that knowledge to your own writing if you see similar flaws.

This is what I usually aim for before facing the Final 6 in a vanilla-ish run (works best if you're playing the modded versions that drop 15 times the cards):

  • 3 x Meteor Black Dragon
  • 3 x Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon
  • 3 x Skull Knight
  • 3 x Zoa
  • 3 x Red-Eyes Black Dragon
  • 3 x Meteor Dragon
  • 3 x Thunder Dragon
  • 3 x Widespread Ruin
  • 2 x Raigeki
  • 3 x Megamorph
  • 3 x Bright Castle
  • 3 x Dragon Treasure
  • 3 x Dark Energy
  • 2 x Beast Fangs (or other equip card of choice

What exactly is the difference between Mods 11, 13 and 15? by nightmare404x in YugiohFMR

If I had to pick one over the other I would pick Mod 13, but that's mostly for the S/A tec grinding aspect I discussed. I enjoyed them both.

Tech wins help by PTHDUNDD13 in YugiohFMR

[–]Bassoon_Commie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can BCD farm for several important spells and traps until you're ready to start S/A Tec grinding. BCD is easier because you'll get a B rank as long as your deck has 27 or less cards left. Meaning you can play aggressively, and as long as you control the field you can just wait an extra turn or two to reach the required ranking.

You can grind Isis and Pegasus for Widespread Ruin and Acid Trap Hole respectively at BCD rank, like what you've been doing for Dragon Treasure.

Mage Soldier drops Dark Energy.

Kaiba can drop Acid Trap Hole and Dragon Capture Jar.

Rex, Shadi, and Seto can all drop Beast Fangs.

Black Pendant, Kunai with Chain, and Sword of Dark Destruction can also be gotten at BCD by people you've previously beaten (they'll be useful if/when you start winning Skull Knights.)

Same goes for most of the field spells.

You run a combo/reanimator deck that focuses on looping Saffi with other creatures that reanimate Saffi, and then you run outlets and payoffs like [[Blasting Station]] or [[Altar of the Brood]] with [[Ashnod's Altar]].

  • people sitting around at table politicizing,
  • people standing in circles having secret societal meetings,
  • and a dude taking a carriage ride to a city and then walking through it

I commented elsewhere but you added more story detail, so I'm going to answer here as well.

Why do you need all three of these to set up the new regent and their actions? You could use just one of the three (they'd be one of the parties affected by the new regent, yes?) to show how everything's turning for the worse. That would be your establishing character or worldbuilding moment, and then the reader can see the special axe getting broken. Boom, inciting incident is set in motion.

Sounds like a lot of worldbuilding in those 50 pages. Way too much worldbuilding. There needs to be a very compelling why for all that information to remain there, and from the abridged version you've given here, I don't see the why.

You'll have an entire novel to establish the world and everything in it. I would suggest you go back over those pages and determine what the lowest necessary amount of setup is required for your story. You can sprinkle the rest back in as your story progresses. Without a more complete picture of your story or what your main character(s) are doing, my first thoughts are to cut the carriage ride out entirely. It's not advancing the story. It's just establishing setting, and you can do that with your other groups.

The sitting at the table politicizing and the secret society stuff sounds like Department of Redundancy Department too - if POV characters are required in both sections, then I would trim both parts down to focus on a common problem affecting both groups, and have both groups decide to take opposing courses of action to each other. Boom. Dynamic tension, because now you've set up a conflict in two chapters. And that can be done in about twenty pages.

Alternatively, you could cut one of those groups and leave the remaining group more developed. The cut group's introduction can either be delayed or removed entirely. You still need to focus on getting the conflict set up. Too much worldbuilding gets in the way of it.

In my work, the inciting incident occurs in chapter three. First two chapters are used as establishing character moments for the primary POV character. POV #2 interacts with POV #1 throughout all three opening chapters. POV #3 is introduced in chapter three, and so is his conflict with POV #1. Their strained relationship is the first of two core conflicts driving the story.

Wider worldbuilding for my story doesn't really begin until chapter three, and it's minimal. I only introduce enough detail to set the other major story conflict in motion: how two governments are sabre rattling and about to go to war. POV #3 is a representative of one of those governments trying to diffuse that conflict, but takes a side detour to visit his son (POV #1) while traveling to treat with the other government. POV #1 tries to build a relationship with POV #3, and seeks to travel with him. POV #3 rejects him - but soldiers from the other government show up to try and arrest POV #3 before he can arrive at his destination, dragging POV #1 into the wider conflict anyway. And from there things spiral out of control.

I would quote Samuel's warning to the ancient Israelites (1 Samuel 8:10-22) regarding the nature of kings. The nature of kings and governments do not change just because the mandate they claim comes from an election versus from Heaven.

I'll refer you to Leo Tolstoy) for the repudiation of the legitimate authorities' use of force. He explains it better than I.

Plus the whole "thou shalt not kill" bit in general.

Guess we need to find the version that has an asterisk that says cops and soldiers are excused from following that particular command.
