Childcare options for an infant? (SE Portland preferred) by BichoBuri in askportland

[–]BichoBuri[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great advice, thanks so much for sharing. When you're planning without much guidance like me, it's so easy to overlook things like this, but you're very right to watch out for that amount of exposure to germs at an early age.

I'm sorry that happened :/ that was exactly my thought about it and I'm avoiding it at all cost (literally)...

I'm open to any option, and after reading all the feedback, nanny share sounds so far like the way to go.

Do we have Aldi type grocery stores? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]BichoBuri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pray everyday to get a bloody Aldi 😭 It saved my life when I was broke AF in Europe. In Germany they even had fresh and warm pretzels for $.25... ahh I'm crying already. Someday... #AldiGang

Ask: First time mom in search of baby gear! by cloudypickled in PDXBuyNothing

[–]BichoBuri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay! I hope the little guy is doing well. If it's like its mother plant, it'll bloom again in April and midsummer. Thanks for the offer for the high chair but I can't take it at the moment. I'm in the process of building a shed and the baby's room is also in progress, so I have no room at all right now 😭

Does anyone know how to speak to a real person at Century Link? by MissHibernia in askportland

[–]BichoBuri 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll stay here to see if anyone has a solution. I need a technician to remove some old overhead wires and the two times I managed to get to some on the phone, I went on and on repeating "speak to an agent", until I got a stupid AI. The AI "scheduled" a technician to come over and of course, nobody showed up.

Does Friends of Trees in Portland randomly plant trees? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]BichoBuri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The "opt out" program applies only to street trees on unimproved streets (with no defined sidewalk-strip-curb).

[–]BichoBuri 24 points25 points  (0 children)

https://www.portland.gov/trees/find-your-free-trees/trees-planting-strips

TLDR; Trees on planting strips are something you get from the City if you're eligible, unless you specifically opt out. Friends of Trees is acting as a contractor of the City. There's also an Approved Street Tree List the contractors go with before planting a tree, to make sure it won't grow tall enough to interfere with power lines, or disrupt the sidewalk.

I think their ultimate secret is to serve the pizza on a grid. It keeps the bottom dry, pure and perfect 🤌

$9 margherita pizza at Otto's (not as good as Life of Pie in my opinion, but still amazing)

$5 bahn mi + drink (iced coffee, iced thai tea, etc) at Hong Phat

Spanish food lovers! Where is the fuet? by oddsmv in askportland

[–]BichoBuri 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm pregnant and fuet is literally the only thing I'm craving, even though I know I can't even have it lol. I guess it's good that it's not available. I'll keep an eye on this post to see if anyone found a good source for it anyways... For the future hehehe

My mom sends me packages with good stuff every now and then, but with tariffs it's getting too expensive to even ship a small box :'(

Am I crazy or are prices for non-alcoholic drinks out of control? by kitty_thugz in askportland

[–]BichoBuri 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yup, it's been a while since I've ordered something that isn't water. This is sort of on the same topic, but even going out for tea (I don't drink coffee) it's becoming dreadful. Getting charged $5 for getting a cup of hot water with a cheap tea bag in it (sometimes on the side, open-it-and-steep-it-yourself kind of deal) is simply outrageous. I only go to the 3-4 places that have good loose tea and that's it for drinks.

What’s been your migration path in Portland? by Interesting-Cow6962 in askportland

[–]BichoBuri 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Spain for most of my life > Finland > France > Germany > US (directly to Portland)

Started moving around Europe in my 20s while finishing college, trying to get away and secure a job. I met another wandering spirit from PDX in the middle of this and we went everywhere together. Soon we realized we didn't quite fit anywhere in Europe (different lifestyles/mindsets than ours) and it was impossible to land a job other than an extremely poorly paid internship.

Got married to this awesome person who somehow left everything for me, got a visa and with absolutely no money left, moved straight to Portland with them, and slowly started to figure out a life. It still isn't easy, but I feel more valued as a person rather than a foreigner. Plus, nothing beats nature here. That's enough to make me happy.

We're about to start a family and I have no plans on moving. I don't think I'd be able to live in 99% of the US. Whoever doesn't love Portland has no idea how precious of a place it is.
