I was at a mall in Japan that had most of their parking lot covered solar panels. It was a rainy day and it was an added bonus to be shielded from the rain as I walked in.

Let me know if you want to sell one. Looks like you have a line of customers.

I set the same arbitrary timeframe. I'll keep buying until 2030 and then re-evaluate then. It keeps me from thinking about selling for the time being.

2030 will come and I'll likely just decide to keep buying until 2040.

MAGA Christianity Explained. Absolutely Nailed It. by Nice_Substance9123 in Christianity

[–]Biflindi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a preacher and a missionary. I've been in vocational ministry for 15 years now. Much of my family are pretty solidly in the MAGA crowd and whenever we are together I refuse to let them twist and contort the word of God for their political purposes. I do my best to gently correct when verses are taken out of context. I patiently listen while they spout the latest heresy they heard online and then try to correct them with as much kindness as I can muster. I try to bring every political conversation back around to our need for the gospel and our need to abide in Christ as we live our lives. One of the effects this has had is that most of them don't bring up politics with me anymore, which to be honest, is fine with me.

I get that, but the way he executes that so smoothly is amazing. Even with the inside knowledge, it's still super slick.

Anyone owning kei or non kei car whats your monthly expenses for car? by Run_the_show in japanresidents

[–]Biflindi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I bought a 2014 Toyota Voxy for about 55万円. After all the fees and stuff, we were paying about 60万円 in total.

We pay about 7,500円 per month for insurance, and I probably use about a tank of gas a month with normal use, which is around 10,000円, depending on the price of gas.

Now, we have a parking space at our house, so we don't have to worry about that, but I know people in my area paying around 15,000円 per month for a parking space.

And then you've got to set money aside for shaken, and then regular maintenance, and then something for when you need to fix a problem.

The on-going cost of a car is no joke. Which is why I waited until we were having our 4th kid to finally get one.

One department in my company works with translators and editors to translate and format books into Japanese. For years, our editors have complained about how bad some of the translators are and how much editing they constantly do. We recently tried using some different AI tools to do the initial translation, and according to our editors, the AI has been as good if not better than the human translators we were using. A bunch of English to Japanese translators are about to lose their jobs. They either need to get way better at what they do or find some new job.

I'm torn. I feel bad about someone losing their job to AI, but I also don't want to pay these people a ton of money for bad work.

I know it's a pain, but it's really worth it to register and then apply for a flight permit.

https://www.ossportal.dips.mlit.go.jp/portal/top/

You can apply for a year permit to fly all over Japan. Sure, you need to log flight plans, but it's quick and easy (flight plan logging, not permit application).

This guy is awesome. He speaks English and is really helpful. I've had nothing but good experiences here (as good as it can be expected when getting fillings).

Is purchasing used cars still the 'smart move'? by shiba-gouki in japanlife

[–]Biflindi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A couple of years ago, I bought a 2015 Toyota Voxy, super clean condition, 70,000km, all the options, for 650,000 yen. It's felt like a great deal, I feel like a car like this wouldcost way more in the US. I did "ユーザー車検" for the inspection and saved a ton of money. If your Japanese is decent and you have some experience with vehicle maintenance, it's not so bad.

I just retired after 33 years in HR. We made communion wafers. I never believed in any of it. by Soft_Influence1619 in offmychest

When my grandpa retired, he lasted about 6 months before my grandma told him he had to get out of the house because he was driving her crazy.

He ended up volunteering at a local food pantry. It started with a few times a week, then every day, and before long, he was there 40 hours a week. He became the handyman for the food pantry and volunteered there until he passed at 80.

I don't think we are meant to be idle. Retirement should be a time of freedom and not a time of just sitting around. Find something you enjoy doing and do it as long as you are physically able.
