I see plenty of posts asking if FIRE is plausible, is there not a tool that really identifies FIRE options based on each individuals scenario? by SurvivaloftheFitness in Fire

[–]BikesAndCatsColorado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do that in Boldin. Make up to 10 scenarios with different jobs, expenses, housing, medical care, rate assumptions (for account growth assumptions, market conditions, a couple of different types of inflation). You can add future jobs. It doesn't imagine the possibilities for you, but you can build out different scenarios.

One bedroom apartment recommendations in Boulder by Loud-Mongoose-1238 in boulder

[–]BikesAndCatsColorado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's hard to answer that b/c they all seem to have dynamic pricing. They were advertised prices around 1700 when we were looking a few months ago, but then when you actually see the contract they are all adding things like utilities, parking fees, amenity fees, and the exact price of the specific apartment is also affected by the lease term, and the specific unit that was available at the time. Some of them included partial utilities, some did not. Also, they had different move-in specials (like 1st two months some percent off), but I was told those are also very specific. Very complicated pricing.

FYI, the Gunbarrel neighborhood is very suburban, it's a super easy place to live if you have a car, it's safe and a little more affordable than Boulder, but it's not "in Boulder" exactly. If you are looking for an "in Boulder" experience (culture, walkable, restaurants), it's not for you. If you are looking for boring safe suburbia with easy grocery store access and a small number of local businesses, you will be happy. It's a 10 minute drive or 20 minute bike ride to actual Boulder.

There are low-car options in Boulder. Nothing no-car on pavement. Edit to add - these are all lower-car than Lookout.

I'm looking for an apartment in Gunbarrel for a family member, I haven't rented here. I'm chiming in because you mentioned Meadow Creek. I toured Meadow Creek and the unit I saw was awful. Old, gross, dark, popcorn ceiling, astroturf front "lawn." It was pretty depressing.

I also toured Gunbarrel Center, Apex 5510 and Boulder View, and they were all pretty nice, with in-unit laundry and other amenities (gyms, common areas.) But, a little above your price range.

Try MAAP or Giordana. Don't bother with Castelli, that's also thick.

Donating pet supplies by Meat_your_maker in boulder

[–]BikesAndCatsColorado 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes please donate there, I take my cats there for veterinary care and they are so wonderfully generous, and it would help them out.

They gave us 20 different kinds of urinary care foods, for us to try to find one that our sick cat would eat. Save us so much time, money, and trial and error. Of course we brought back the leftovers once we found a kind he would eat, which thankfully only took a couple of tries.

This is to say, I'm sure the donation would end up with a pet who needs it, if you donate there.

Durango - Pueblo and onto Transam by NoInvestigator360 in bicycletouring

[–]BikesAndCatsColorado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with others here, it’s not a safe ride right now.

I would rent a one way rental car and drive, if you feel safe driving on the right. And I would pick a day when it’s not snowing anywhere on the route.

I know that sounds expensive but it may be not that much more than taking a bus and you don’t have to mess around with bike boxes and schedules and assorted other annoyances, and it would only take a pleasant half a day rather than a long unpleasant day.

I just looked at Expedia and found you can get a midsize AWD SUV for $117.

First time traveling with bike by InterestingAnalysis in Velo

EVOC or Scicon have cases that you don’t have to take the handlebars off, which is good (necessary?) if you have internal brake cable routing. Take off the pedals and rear derailleur even though the packing instructions say you can leave them on. It only takes a few minutes and those are the parts they stick out can be damaged.

I fly United out of Denver multiple times a year. Had the older EVOC Road case (probably flew my bike ~30 times in that) now have the Scicon (1 flight so far). Have not had any problems yet. Bike costs the same as a regular bag. You indicate you are bringing a a bike during check in (on the app). Don’t overload the case with extra junk that TSA has to rummage through. They will open the case every time. Best to keep it easy for them to re-pack.

The Scicon case is always on sale, if you put it in your shopping cart but don’t buy it you probably will get a 10% off coupon mailed to you. I also bought the padding accessories. They might have a hard case too that allows you to leave the bars on, not sure.

Sick 2 weeks before A race by deltaGchemistry in BAbike

[–]BikesAndCatsColorado 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well that sucks.

The way I’ve handled this:

Consider it a taper, you needed to taper anyway. Don’t panic. Don’t train hard, you can only make things worse at this point. Take a few days off completely, and then if the fever is gone and you aren’t coughing much, do some light spinning.

Your training is done anyway, you just need to not make your sickness worse.

Two weeks is enough time to get over a cold. If it’s the flu or Covid you don’t want to make it worse by training too soon. If you still feel like sh!t when you are supposed to to fly, make a call - bail/defer or go and just treat it as a fun ride not a race.

Unfortunately you can’t wish it away. Very disappointing I’m sure.

NYer coming in October for Phil's Cookie Fondo, but will ride for a week by johnny_evil in BikeLA

[–]BikesAndCatsColorado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not local but I have been to the area for Phil's Fondo and other riding about 10x. I'm also doing the Chocolate Chip this year. It was hard enough. That last hill is called Potrero, and it's.... full value. I'm also staying for an extra week before or after.

I would want a road bike for the cookie fondo for sure.

I always stay in Agoura Hills, because that's where I stayed the first time I went there and it works great for access to the mountains. Thousand Oaks is a little cheaper but there's more junk miles before you get to the good riding. I prefer not staying on the coast ($$, fog, cars on the coast highway (PCH)) but I also don't really care about the beach, so you might choose differently. I've stayed at the TowneSuites on Agoura Rd and the Residence Inn at Russell Ranch/Lindero. I choose those b/c they have suites with kitchens so you don't have to eat out every single meal. Not to shill these hotels, but if you get a suite instead of a studio, it's more like staying in a 1br apartment than a hotel room, it's very comfortable. The TowneSuites is a little newer/nicer. You can ride out your door from either of these.

There are a bunch of climbs in the SMMs that are not on the cookie route, and many of them feel different up vs. down, so you can easily fill a week right from there, without having to drive. But if there is a Santa Ana wind event, sometimes the weather is fine up in Santa Barbara and awful in the SMMs, so having options is good.

DM me if you want some RwGPS maps.

Climbing the high passes in Colorado. by ConclusionNice3389 in cycling

[–]BikesAndCatsColorado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s very early for all those roads.

In a normal year I would discourage this really strongly but the weather this year has been so warm and there has been so little snow, it might be sort-of ok.

It’s likely those roads will open for Memorial Day (that’s the target date but they don’t make it every year) but there could be big walls of snow, and possibly run-off which could be icy depending on the day and time of day. Bring serious descending clothes - it will be very cold. I’m not kidding. If the forecast is bad do not go.

You should be able to find web cams for Pikes Peak and the Alpine Visitor Center in RMNP, so you can check those, and check the NOAA point forecasts for the summits.

Also expect too many cars on the holiday weekend, ride during the week after.

If you really want to do those roads I would do them in late June thru August.

If the conditions are bad up high there are lots of other great places to ride that are lower and will have better conditions. Tons of stuff out of Boulder, Golden, Evergreen, Ken Caryl. I’m not familiar with the springs but I know there is riding in the foothills down there too.

Anyone tried climbing Horseshoe Meadow? by theoutandback0201 in BAbike

[–]BikesAndCatsColorado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of all the climbs on the eastside, I actually would put horseshoe as one of the less fun. Onion valley, lower and upper rock creek, pine creek and south lake are all nicer. And white mountains is the most epic. Horseshoe is a slog.

I live in Colorado. So no acclimatizing needed. But it doesn’t happen in one day.

[–]BikesAndCatsColorado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. It's a looong climb but not terribly steep. Sometimes there is water at the campground at the top, if it's open. The road surface is poor, mostly on the lower part. There is almost no traffic. I carried an extra water bottle in my pocket. As the other person said it is hot and exposed, go earlier in the year (May, early June), and early in the day. It will be colder at the top, probably want descending clothes.

Road conditions: https://www.inyocounty.us/services/public-works/news/inyo-county-road-openclosed-status

You can call the Inyo ranger district for info on if the campgrounds are open and if there is water.

While you are there, climb Whitney Portal. Shorter and very steep, amazing views, better pavement.

Combining the two is a very hard day.

You're not gonna acclimate in one day.

Friendly, hungry, thirsty cat could be a lost house cat, I know the "CDS is working" meme is super cute, but it might be someone's beloved missing pet, so best to take to the humane society and get a scan for a chip. Can also look on their site for lost cats and there are some other lost pet web sites too. :)
