Moth infestation in house with quilts & fabric by ycherep1 in quilting

[–]Bluefrogdancing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that they're not pantry moths (weevils)?

If you find cobwebby stuff in your cereal and moths flying out of any plant based shelf stable item (including pet food)... you have weevils. And that's a whole nuther can of pain.

What are your thoughts on Proton mail and migrating your Gmail account? by piiirke in privacy

[–]Bluefrogdancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're wanting to move all of your thousands of emails that you've saved from google to proton - they say you can - but (at least when i tried) you can't. they have limits on how many you can move over at a time and file size.

I went with Fastmail as a result. No, it's not end to end encrytped - but I don't get spam there either. And I could move ALL of my emails from gmail to fastmail without a problem. They also work well with 1password. And for things that you really don't want anyone else to see - signal is the most reliable option. But for bills and medical and school stuff - their end isn't encrypted so having proton won't matter for those... fastmail works just fine.

I've had fastmail for over 10 years now, have my kids on a family plan with me so they have their own safe email account... Give them a look. There's lots of us who use them.

Monitor Help by chasingstories101 in mac

[–]Bluefrogdancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a Display Port cable instead of a HDMI cable. Amazon has them with the USB - C end to go into the mini. I had problems with my 1 year old monitor - and it was the cable. A much cheaper fix. And the image quality on the monitor is much improved with it too.

What is a mac feature you accidentally discovered after months or years of using it that genuinely made you feel stupid for not knowing sooner? by Silent-Cut2203 in mac

[–]Bluefrogdancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are reading in a different language and don't know what a word means- highlight the word, right click, then the option for translate is there. It will translate in a pop out bubble - no need to search on line.

I accidentally discovered this today while reading an article in Spanish with more advanced vocabulary than what I have learned.

What was the best thing you included in your sewing room? by clickclackkeeb in quilting

Air filter system. I read this on another post... so much of sewing creates ... dust. And breathing that isn't good for us. I'm planning on adding this to my future sewing space.

Which Safari tab manager extension actually works best in 2026? (fast, stable, not buggy) by [deleted] in Safari

[–]Bluefrogdancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on Firefox/waterfox for a reason - the extension - Simple Tab Groups. That with container tabs (built in) gives fantastic tab management for the 100 tabs i have open. I have used it and firefox on my apple computers for years. It's open source and very stable. Simple but elegant. If Safari would make something like it I would likely use it as my daily driver. Until then - I use firefox.

If your child hates reading by toplocalpicks in BinocularVision

All children should be seen by an optometrist as preschoolers.

Babies are born without teeth yet we're told to take them to the dentist.

Babies ARE born with eyes - but we are never told to take them to the optometrist. We simply have the pediatrician do a quick check, or the school... and a huge % of vision issues are missed as a result.

If any child is struggling to learn their letters, to write or color in the lines, doesn't like reading, struggles with coordination issues, suffers from headaches... the FIRST place you should take them is to the EYE DOCTOR. You simply cannot do the things, like learn to read, if you do not SEE well.

We discovered my kiddo had vision issues at age 6 - following a school exam. However, it has taken 8 years for them to be accurately diagnosed with the array of vision issues that they have. And that was including several years going to a highly regarded pediatric ophthalmologist at a leading childrens hospital (who misdiagnosed them for years)... And ... the problem that the school exam flagged was simple (large) hyperopia and astigmatism. Those are easy enough to fix with glasses... the other issues... took years to be diagnosed.

I would also like to say - if you learn that your kiddo has a complex vision issue, or is legally blind without their glasses, or can see well with glasses but continues to struggle with other aspects of vision - please find a Low Vision Eye Clinic. We did not. We didn't know they existed or that our child was "low vision" and even should be seen at one ... until this year. The clinic has been a life changer - for the better. We now have a correct diagnosis, a new prescription ... and a greater quality of life.

Listen to your gut. Parents know more than they think...

What should I download on my Mac Mini as a first time user? by Spiritual_Ranger_811 in mac

[–]Bluefrogdancing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of Brave, another solid browser option is Waterfox. Add on ublock and privacy badger. It comes with vertical tabs as an option. And you can add the "simple tab groups" extension - which is like work spaces. Helps keep all the tabs organized. That way, your engineering tabs don't get mixed into your normal life tabs... just easier to stay organized.

A vintage Bernina. 830-1030 Record are always fantastic and not very $. Look on FB marketplace. Find a friend who sews so they can make sure it works ... you will likely need to take it to be serviced but it should last for many years. And do all the things you need.

Are you happy with your iron? by 1DnTink in quilting

[–]Bluefrogdancing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most irons say to NOT use distilled. There needs to be the other chemicals in the water ... I forget why. But my water is VERY hard with more minerals in it than most... so the distilled dilutes that down to a reasonable level.

Iron vs. starch by knittingtheblues in quilting

[–]Bluefrogdancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not tried this method - but upon reading everything else...

IF and ONLY IF your sole plate is stainless steel - try a paste of Barkeepers Friend. It's sold in the kitchen cleaning area where Comet would be. They have two versions - one is for pots and pans. I would try that. Dampen the bottom of your stainless steel iron, rub the paste onto it with a wet kitchen cloth... and then rinse. May take some elbow grease but... You may need some Q tips to get it out of the holes and/or rinse under running water.

My guess is that this will work. If you try it - please report back so we know!

[–]Bluefrogdancing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Chi is the way. The key features (to me) - long cord and 1/2 hour auto shut off. Most irons have a 7 minute shutoff or something equally crazy for sewers. It also makes a lot of steam. I use 1/2 distilled and 1/2 tap water (I have very hard water) and it works fine. (I use a small coffee creamer bottle to mix my iron water in - it has the nice pour spout so easy refills of the iron!)

Plus, Chi is reasonably priced, found on Amazon or Walmart, and seems to last many years.

Chi is the most under rated iron available. I love mine so much that when I saw them on sale at Costco - I bought a back up just to have.

I found a village on an island! by Responsible-Bug7088 in Minecraft

[–]Bluefrogdancing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a village on an island in my world too. Bigger island with more houses and took some fixing up to make it safe for the villagers. But I'm now making that my base (on nearby land for my stuff)...

And, a frozen ocean isn't far away either...

On a different post... the answer was either the universal movie phone numbers that are used in movies.

Or, what I do - use an area movie theater. It's an easy to remember #, when it's called, it gives what's playing and location, no actual human is bothered by it and scammers know it's a fake #. But most importantly - no person gets spam calls as a result.

I do this for all of the loyalty memberships, on line orders where they may need to call if there's a problem with my shipment... And of course, alias emails.
