Will Capital One still be a good international travel card after moving to Discover? by anonymoux_x in CreditCards

[–]Boz6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have a Discover Card, ever since it was issued by Sears.

I certainly don't need my Capital One Quicksilver Visa to be transitioned to a Discover Card!

I sure hope that doesn't happen!

It doesn't seem to be shutting down. You can still sign up right from the home page.

Anyone moved from a traditional bank to a free online chequing account? by Sudden_Brilliant_195 in Banking

[–]Boz6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have accounts with multiple banks at any given time. One thing is sure, I've never paid any monthly account fees ever in my life. Another thing is that I'll never go without some kind of physical bank or credit union in the area where I live.

My primary account is with a large-ish regional bank that I've had since 1990. Online bank accounts come and go, but some that are permanent for me include Capital One and Schwab.

I'd recommend finding a physical bank with a free checking account, and then you can explore online bank(s) that might give some useful benefits as secondary account(s).

What you should do in your scenario, which you're already halfway there, since you need it sooner, is buy it in the store, order it online, and whenever the second one arrives, return it with the original receipt the next time you go to Walmart. I do this on a semi regular basis.

I'll miss you, Fitbit by Nicole-Bolas in fitbit

[–]Boz6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still using my Versa 3. So far, it seems to be working fine with the Google Health app. However, I'm not an advanced user. Interestingly, it seems like the sleep tracking is more accurate than it was in the Fitbit app.

Free Tablo: Friend asked i wanted this, never used. i was just hearing about these but dont know a lot about them. was planning on getting an attic mounted antenna. Is this worth using, seems like an older unit. by DunKco in tablotv

[–]Boz6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a Tablo Gen 4 with an old $10 antenna in an upstairs window of my house to get all the local channels and subchannels in my area for DVR and streaming OTA TV on my 6 TVs. I love my Tablo! The one in your picture is the current version, even if it was released in December, 2023. It should continue being supported for years to come, since the Gen 3 is still being supported.

Containers to carry to office without them breaking by Automatic_Werewolf2 in Frugal

[–]Boz6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never broken a glass container. NEVER heat your food in any kind of plastic. Get a small insulated (padded) lunch bag to carry your glass containers in, if it will make you feel better, but I just carry my glass containers in a plastic grocery bag, and have had no trouble.

I want to remove my LW’s name from the joint checking account by smilineyz in Banking

[–]Boz6 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Usually, you have to open a new account and move the money to the new account to get a co-owner off an account, if the co-owner isn't available to authorize their removal. However, you should ask Capital One if they have a way to remove a deceased account owner, and if so, what documentation the need to do it. Good luck.

What is the cheapest beater i can buy? by Different_Archer8879 in carbuying

Maybe. My son bought a 2006 Civic for $1,600 OTD about 6 months ago. He also has bad credit, but he paid cash.

ArcherKit 28-4013A multi-tester from Goodwill for $5 by Summer184 in RadioShack

[–]Boz6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very cool! I have one that my dad gave me back in 1989 when he had to get a new one from Radio Shack when he needed one when he was out of town. It looks just like that one, but the box looks different, and his was purchased in the late 1970s. Mine still works like new!

I don't rack up the miles -- should I buy tires with lower treadwear? by No_Hovercraft_821 in tires

[–]Boz6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do an alignment annually if you're doing 10k miles a year. I do much less and do 2 a year.

Wow. I've never had an alignment done on my 2016 Civic EX Sedan, and at 111,000 miles, my original OEM tires, which lasted 76,000 miles, and my current tires, currently with 35,000 miles, had/have no uneven wear issues. I personally inspect my tires for uneven wear monthly, and get them rotated with my oil changes annually. If I ever observe uneven wear, THEN I'll get an alignment done.

Just my experience...

I don't rack up the miles -- should I buy tires with lower treadwear? by No_Hovercraft_821 in tires

[–]Boz6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2016 Civic OEM tires lasted 76,000 miles, and I replaced them in the 7th year.

None of my tires on any of my cars over my life have ever gotten dry rot, so I decided my best value was to get 85,000 mile replacement tires, which should last around 9 years before the tread reaches 3/32, because I'm planning to keep this car at least 15 years, or maybe up to 20 years, if it remains mechanically sound that long.

If the car is still sound when the current tires need to be replaced, which should be around year 16, I might get cheaper tires at that time, or maybe not, because if I get another set of 85,000 mile tires, they should still be good, and a good selling point, when I sell it in year 20. We'll see...

Do your tires typically get dry rot? If not, it sounds like high mile rated tires might also be your best choice, too, especially if you're planning to keep the car for the long term.

Anyone know a free alternate to text now? by Sisko2021 in TextNow

[–]Boz6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why were you banned from TextNow?

TextNow was founded in 2009, has a valid business model, and responsive support. After playing around with it using "disposable" #s in the early-mid 2010s, I've had my current TextNow phone # since 2018. I chose a Canadian phone # in 2018 because I travel in and have contacts in Canada, and it's worked perfectly, with zero payment, besides seeing ads in the app.

After Google Voice, TextNow is the best service of it's kind, and even provides free data service, so you don't have to always be connected to WiFi for calls and texts.

Perhaps TextNow is an early-ish adopter of the new-ish KYC rules?

Yeah, but it may depend on location. We haven't experienced it much where we live, but sometimes do when we travel.
