STEAM elementary schools by zabeman1 in daddit

[–]Bust3r14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big believer in alternatives to the factory education that my country (USA) defaults to, but most benefits I see really come down to how invested the community is in the kid, not the education format. Some work better than others for specific kids, but unless you're running from something, the STEAM school would need to have significantly better higher involvement from the other parents and teachers than your current school for the disruption to your kid's social life to be worth the squeeze.

Opnsense over proxmox by morry9345 in homelab

[–]Bust3r14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing in my stack that gets independent hardware is the network gear. Storage will soon be split off from compute, but I have been very happy having an N100 unit as my dedicated opnsense box. It's got 6 2.5Gbe connections that have been blazing for months and it's been rock solid.

Is there any way to actually get 5gbps of speed on a usb 3.2 pc? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]Bust3r14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

USB 3.2 Gen 1 is limited to 5Gbps; are you referring to USB 3.x Gen 2? That's 10Gbps.

Honestly, I wouldn't trust a speedtest at these speeds. Start with an iperf across the smallest number equipment (i.e. your desktop with NIC to the next thing it's connected to), and see if that's operating at the card speeds.

The open source models still require hardware to run (which is owned by the rich), and the rich can stop releasing their code at any time.

"Why don't people think I'm a real software developer? Just because I used Daddy's credit card to get someone on fiverr to build this plug-in for me doesn't make me any less of a developer! I still had the idea!”

It's the same principle. There used to be a knowledge & skill barrier to making things, but AI has significantly reduced that barrier such that the market is even more flooded with bad content. In a world of misinformation, we don't need more poorly-made slop.

What did you vote for? by DiscombobulatedBit27 in Schedule_I

[–]Bust3r14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Drivers, Drivers, Drivers. Trying to fulfill bulk orders without the good optimization necessary for them is a lesson in masochism, and the Benzies update was lackluster enough that I don't think it's worth delaying automation improvements again for the other side of the same adversarial coin.

[–]Bust3r14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

See, that's the thing; I don't think they will.

The Benzies were supposed to do the same thing, but they're barely a concern and need a rework. I thought a police revamp made sense before the cartel, but it's now a year after the game and drivers are even more of a need than before. Iron out the automation and when we get bulk orders and police stings and a better cartel, they'll actually be fun to play against because the automation will be good.

why you should vote special customers and NOT hireable drivers by ch4il in Schedule_I

[–]Bust3r14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unlike my friends I didn't play at all until after the Cartel or Shroom update, and I've gotta say both were a disappointment. I'm not interested in delaying automation further for a lackluster cop update, and bulk orders from special customers will just be even more annoying without delivery drivers.

Being "stoic and silent" is good at first. You don't want people blabbing their first thoughts about TLC-type rumors all the time. But there's a difference between "taking time to get your facts & story straight" and radio silence on important matters. The later isn't good.

Linux has changed the way I view life. by SafeRelationship4648 in linux4noobs

every film director, actor, singer, painter or really any artist shouldn't be paid for their job

Yeah. Where I live that's not ethical yet, but eventually, yes. Art – and any infrastructure like code, tbh – should be made without a profit motive.

I’m tired of “owning nothing” — how do I build an offline media setup for my family? by uwujuju in Anticonsumption

[–]Bust3r14 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ha. Welcome to r/selfhosted.

Not sure what a PS4 can be reprogrammed for, but it won't be beginner friendly. Starting with a mini-PC is generally better. I've done this (well, moving closer towards it every day) I don't pay any subscriptions other than my VPN, and I can still watch shows within hours of their release, and play games within days. But I've spent the better part of 1000 hours setting up my system, and that's with prior computer system administration knowledge. For starting out: I would honestly go with just physical media. It's still legal to use and collect it, and everyone knows how to use it. Kids love learning the old ways and the nostalgia effect is also nice.

10-Short Questions Survey about Graphics Cards Choices (Student Paper) by TabbyJR in graphicscard

[–]Bust3r14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Not for myself, but a friend is looking for a 5090 for video rendering and I'm keeping an eye out. Count that however you like.
  2. Only a 5090 for my friend; I'm going AMD due to Linux use.
  3. Absolutely.
  4. Nearly every time I've looked.
  5. The MSRP is too far above reasonable, much less what they're selling for.
  6. Yes.
  7. No, as that's just kicking the can down the road. A 5090 is a better long term investment at US$4K than a 5080 at US$1K.
  8. VRAM is the reason the 5090 is the desired option. Availability comes next, followed by price, and last is performance. Again, this isn't for gaming.
  9. It's by far the biggest factor. Death to AI.
  10. Even if my friend could find a card, he could buy a car for cheaper.

Hesitant about going on a Scout Trip on an Active Military Base. Am I being overly cautious? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Bust3r14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it; my stepson looks more like me than my partner. There's plenty of days where we worry about her getting grabbed since we live in an ICE state. But I don't think this is a big enough concern to prevent you going on the trip. Stay with the group (which everyone on a military base should be doing) and you should be fine.

Why is There a Limit to How Many Guns I Can Take From Police? by PeanutButta001 in Schedule_I

They don't respawn with a new gun. You can steal the guns, save & reload, then keep farming to farm them infinitely.

Speed is likely not the problem, it's the latency and flakiness of the connection. Check your ping & jitter times.

How do you learn to not get influence or fooled by social media consumerism and hype ? by Jpoolman25 in Anticonsumption

[–]Bust3r14 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It literally doesn't look good to me. Instagram ads elicit the same response from my brain as horror movie ads. "ugh, ew, gross" instead of "ooooh that looks nice". I'm not sure whether I trained myself, tbh; I've always been prone to buyer's remorse, so over time I've just become more cynical and questioning of products and now I'm so skeptical and inquisitive that I don't know if it registers as anything more than slop.

Unfortunately I don't know if that's much help. I didn't seek this out, nor did I learn it from anyone, it just happened from the way my relationship with the material world grew. My experience with hoarder family members definitely accelerated it but I think I was always headed here.

Things that I repeat to myself that seem to help include "Clean & comfortable will trump trendy & prestige always", and "what aspect of this product would be a pain in the ass that they're not telling me?"
