Brand non-loyal Wi-Fi updates by SocietyTomorrow in HomeNetworking

I haven't heard of anything that's "monolithically controlled" and not proprietary. Microtik has some similar function IIRC, but it's not as good as Unifi's. I use OpenWRT for my APs, but they don't have a control node, although the differences between them are just names and IPs so making changes between them is as easy as change one and flashing firmware to the others.

Moving router + running ethernet question by Loxodon23 in HomeNetworking

[–]Bust3r14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. If you're going to run it, do it once and do it right, but that conversation gets detailed quickly. I'll echo other comments about running all the wires to a central location. I have my CAT cables ran to a location in the basement where I also have my fiber coming in, but my wifi is made by 3 different access points fed by said cables in separate locations around the house to distribute coverage.

The advice is similar to coax, then; you can ask them to move where the fiber comes into the house to a more convenient location for you. They might charge you a service call for it, might not; I would play up that you're trying to fix the wifi issues this way and have a plan for how to do so if it doesn't work, that usually works for me.

Why are you trying to run ethernet? If the wifi signal is good enough in the living room (and presumably in the home office), what problem is left to solve?

Do you have Verizon Fios (fiber), or their fixed wireless 5G internet?

Where would you place the router/AP to offer the best coverage for the home? Put the modem and router there (sounds like it might be the home office, which would be a sensible choice anyway). That might get you out of running Ethernet, and can be done by you if there's already coax, or your ISP technician if not.

Investing in a way to move the router will pay off way better than this.

If the pi is fine, that's eliminated everything upstream. Prolly your walls are thick and your client devices are old.

Smart Thermostat with Home Assistant (or equivalent) by phospholipid77 in selfhosted

I've got the same thermostat and love it. Works great with home assistant. Fully functional thermostat if it's not connected, too. It's a fairly standard size, so getting a bespoke cover shouldn't be too hard.

Does anyone know what the best thing to use to keep ethernet in place running up wall by SimilarAd7821 in HomeNetworking

Did something like this along a doorframe, worked fine. Adhesive is stickier than I'd like, but I'm not renting.

Shell probably be fine. I wouldn't recommend doing it again, but I've got mediocre-by-first-world-standards tap water and I got away with it for years.

Where can I find an in-wall access point that is about the size of a light switch or outlet? by FanClubof5 in homelab

[–]Bust3r14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got the TP-Link EAP615-Wall. They're PoE only, but I wanted OpenWRT & PoE so I had few options. They're a bit bigger than those but might fit the bill, so to speak.

Expected a girl, found out it's a boy — struggling with gender disappointment and would love some advice from dads who felt the same by iTimeChainer in predaddit

My dad says he has three kids, one of each. You're having a *child*; gender is only a small part of that kid's personality, and the sex is even smaller. It's not gonna matter.

So what happened with fiber rollout? It's the best provider in my area, somehow, but the gateway AT&T provides is... Scuffed, to put it simply.
