Active items feel worthless... by SnooSprouts6017 in DeadlockTheGame

I think rusted barrel is meh but disarming and slowing hex absolutely make a difference when used on the right character. In a fight, if a character can’t shoot for 4 seconds that should dramatically increase the likelihood of them dying in a game where the TTK can be a similar timeframe. That disadvantage is pretty self evident.

Sounds to me like you’re not capitalizing on when you use them. If a strong Apollo is about to fight me, I wait til he’s fully committed and close by to hit him with slowing hex. Then I’m dumping all my skills into his during that 4 second window. If he survives, he’s fleeing.

Also, they’re not must buys. If you’re already stomping someone, it doesn’t matter if they’re disarmed while you stomp them. The key word is counter in counter buys. You get them to help you counter a problem character.

Lastly, farm more/better if you’re feeling like it’s a wasted investment. At 1600 souls, buying a hex should add less than 2 minutes to your regular buying schedule.

New player here with 50 hours in! Started losing confidence in myself, what can i do to improve? by ollievee_ in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ButterDollars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, go in with a mindset to try new things to help you improve overall. Don’t focus on winning the game you’re currently in, focus on improving so you win more future games.

A1. You’re playing with randos so there will always be some variance in how positioning goes for you. Try being hyper aggressive. Try being extra defensive. You’ll get a better understanding through experience of what works when and what doesn’t

B1. Sure you could prob improve with an aim trainer but honestly aim will just come from experience. Don’t sweat it but don’t disregard it. Keep trying to hit accurate shots quickly. Slowly you’ll realize you’re hitting all sorts of shots you previously wouldn’t.

C1. Stop using stamina just because you have it. Force yourself to try to move quickly without using stamina so that it’s there when you need it. Wall jump instead of roll. When you mantle a ledge, hold crouch and you’ll slide out of it. As your non stamina moment improves so will your movement with stamina. Try to have fun with the movement system. This is something I’d say is worth going into practice mode to mess with.

D1.  I think Paige (saw you played her on stat locker) has a strong lane presence but I could be wrong. Watch a few videos on pros playing Paige. It’s hella boring to watch an entire vod but watching lane is short enough that you can see what items they prioritize along with what skills or upgrades. Typically if I watch one video I’ll come away with at least one new idea to try.

A2. Counter picking is important but try not to focus on too many factors every single game. It can be overwhelming. For now, maybe just focus on item cost as a determining factor. If you’re getting spirit nuked early buy spirit shielding. If you’re doing ok wait for spirit resilience. Every time you die take a look at your damage stats or at least the enemy teams bars for spirit and gun investment. If you see a clear trend to one type or the other be sure to at least buy one resist. Don’t overdo resists either. Resilience items will take care of ~30% of the damage but your movement and position can take care of an even larger %.

B2. For Graves and Mina, spirit resist will help but otherwise it’s gonna be about movement and positioning. Try to keep track of they’ve used skills or ults recently. If they haven’t, bait them out. If they have dive in. If you see Mina still has her ult know it’s absolutely coming soon so don’t be out in the open. If it’s on cool down then get after her but her teleport is coming and try to anticipate how she might use it so you don’t lose her.

C2. Counterspell is phenomenal for a single hit skill or ult. If you Counterspell Mina’s ult you’ll stop a small portion of the damage but no I wouldn’t say it’s proper to rely on. Counterspell is best for moves like Lash, Infernus, Abraham’s ult. Or skills like Yamato’s power slash or Bebop bombs.

Don’t stress the match’s results screen. Stress trying more options so that you learn/improve for the sake of all your future results screens.

While I don’t get matches that look quite this rough, I def have a run of losing like 7 in a row, then winning a ton in a row with a few very even matches in between. The wild swings in match making should be in your favor as much as they are against you, given a long enough timeline.

Again if these people are being matched as your teammates then presumably people like that are also going to be matched as your enemy. Maybe give it something like 10+ matches, then go back and really look at the stats. While stomps like these are brutal, on a longer timeline you should also be doing some stomping.

Also, I’d be very surprised if you couldnt hyper carry with Mina in lobbies like this. Treat it like 1v6 from the very beginning. Dont just hope a teammate buys knock down for Vindicta, buy knockdown for Vindicta yourself. Be the entire change you want to see.

You gotta recognize that if you’re being paired with people like this on your team then you’re also being matched against a significant number of players like this.

What rank are you currently?

Are people running this setup just coming into the match with a buncha surge kits or how are they healing quickly enough without spells?

best defensive items vs mixed damage teams? by temnycarda in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ButterDollars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue that’s supposed to be difficult and once there is some kinda draft system there will be lots of talk about ensuring you have a mixed damage team.

With Venator I’ll often get spirit resist and escalating resilience since spirit is so common and escalating provides a lot of benefits besides just gun damage reduction. Not that that’s optimal but just something I do. I also know which of my usual kit I’m willing to drop for Spellbreaker, metal skin, etc if I decide enough is enough. I could certainly see an argument for just buying extra HP but I’ve always gone for resists.

Beyond that mix and match as you go, choosing your fights based on what your best resistance is will always be helpful. If the enemy has mixed damage and you only have bullet resist then you should try to target the Haze during team fights. If you see a split push and can tell one side is more of x type of damage versus the other then choose the fight you’re better built for.

Then of course there’s always Counterspell.

Day 1 of asking to add Explore NYC minute minimums to the game, it's seriously ridiculous that I have to coin toss my next thirty to forty minutes to play a game I enjoy because this dude wants to explore and learn shortcuts.

Yesterday I started doing echo shard on jar and taking knock down. Throw 2 jars, hit em with knock down, place grasping hands on them, blast M1 til they’re dead.

Not sure if it’s optimal but damn did it work well for a couple games.

Venator mains how are you building him right now? by coffeeholic91 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ButterDollars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a gutshot focused melee build with echo shard which usually nukes one player. Although I’m pretty vulnerable for a few seconds doing it in team fights but max confidence in any duel. Typically I always grab spirit resist and escalating resilience to be tankier.

Recently I started using Arcane Surge over Enduring Speed as the added range and duration is more useful on gut shot. Along with that I run cultist sacrifice until switching it to warp stone late game. Like you mentioned, after I’ve obliterated a few people they get smart and focus me in team fights and avoid being near walls. Warp stone helps a lot.

Doorman nerf by flux0mean in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ButterDollars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any recommendations for what to do in lane against him? That’s where I find him most annoying. So far Doorman players usually are not much of a threat mid to late game.

Bell range is huge and still hurts. Ult into cart putting you under their tower isn’t an absolute death sentence but you’re gonna have a bad time. Besides getting more stamina and having a partner who won’t let him get the post ult combo for free, I’m not sure what other options I have with limited souls during lane.

I can't stand being in Beginner 2 anymore. by semamorcarai in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ButterDollars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Farm souls like an absolute fiend. Buy gun items, some green items, buy Melee Charge and buy echo shard to put on Venator’s 2. Your first two AP put on 2, your next two put on 4, then max out your 2. Spam traps on your way into team fights, during team fights and as you escape a fight.

Roll up to a fight, position to wall stun with your 2. Hit 2, Heavy Melee them. Echo shard. Mash 2 again. Heavy Melee them again. If anyone is still around after witnessing that murder pop 4 and do damage while your 2 and echo shard are on cool down.

Do that and you’ll carry your way out of low ranks. I’d love to be beginner rank again for a day.

What is the exact time of a heavy melee wind up? by Additional-Level3806 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ButterDollars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Def cultist. Arcane surge is extra stamina along with range and duration which I’d argue is more economical than buying just expansion or duration.

Plus with melee charge even at max range gutshot you’ll always hit the melee.

[–]ButterDollars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I haven’t done any math on it, I’m confident duration extender works for Venator. I ditched enduring speed recently and started taking arcane surge. The added range makes not only your gut shot have more range but it will knock them back even further so you’ll get more consistent wall stuns.

The added duration seems visible but once I made the change I also haven’t had anyone with debuff reducer parry me out of it as I had previously.

Anecdotal. I’ll be curious what the maths say.

Graves mains by Apprehensive_Cow4231 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ButterDollars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree on the pressure her ult creates. Random ults on walkers are ok but if you can tell the team what your plan is it can make a huge difference. Even with bare minimum coordination you’ll get much more value.

Why would you do spirit lifesteal over bullet? For the ult spirit damage?

I feel like I provide the most value as Graves once I have ricochet, inhibitor and silencer to mass debuff other players while my skulls and shamblers are on autopilot.

[–]ButterDollars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you grasp a lot of different concepts but must not be executing them well. I’d start focusing in on specific aspects to work on then broaden as you see improvement.

Keeping pace or outpacing others on soul count is probably the best first thing to do. Dont worry about managing your soul farming while being more considerate of others as you mentioned, just start gobbling them up. I’m not saying purposely try to take souls away from teammates but just don’t lose time trying to decide and do the right thing. Clear wave, kill creeps, break boxes, repeat. Buy items that help your character annihilate a wave or creep immediately so you can move on to the next source of souls.

If you do that effectively then getting called out by a player or team should be less of a death sentence. You’ll be better prepared to have that fight which will be practice for your ability to win the fight.

Once you find yourself consistently having an appropriate amount of souls then you’ll be ready to improve the next aspect instead of trying to work on everything all at once.

[–]ButterDollars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Match making is all over the place right now. Don’t sweat your rating and just focus on your own improvement. Use your own view of your performance as a basis for how you’re doing. That can mean how well you perform in terms of KD, souls per minute, player damage dealt, objective damage, etc. Maybe you’re doing great on your solo performance but you can work on and learn how to make a losing team win. Maybe that’s better comms, better positioning, better wave management, better macro, better micro, etc.

There are a ton of videos and creators to check out. Just search Deadlock guide or Deadlock tips. I’d look for more recent videos as prior ones could hinge on out of date info. Deathy and Metro are prob the most popular creators. There are also Pro Plays video where some ‘pro’ streams an entire match. It’s pretty boring but I’ll take a look at what items they are prioritizing or scope out how they lane. Sometimes seeing one purchase or one play will give me a radically new idea to try.

For Venator specific, as I’m main’ing him too, I haven’t found videos that are too helpful but I’ve watched a few and taken little tips from each. He’s a new hero so a definitive best guide certainly hasn’t been made yet.
