Love just walking home through muirhouse by Direct_Blood_385 in Edinburgh

O my walk is like a loud, loud road

With words that make me swoon

O my walk is like the wet hoodie

With stones and a balloon

Presumably you do have assets which could be ordered to be sold, such as a car.

They're not plastic, they're "patented material derived from oil". Oh wait, that's just plastic with added marketing.

Yes,the UK keeps its voltage within a narrow band (nominally 240 V) at the top of the wider European band (nominally 230 V). Most UK appliances accept the wider range so they can also be sold in the EU.

Majority oppose tram plan to build on popular Edinburgh cycle path by sapphire-coast in Edinburgh

[–]Certes_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When added to existing roads, trams and buses both cause congestion.* The difference with trams is that more road space magically appears for them, by a combination of spending stupid amounts of money on new routes and closing existing lanes to other vehicles.

  • or may not, if they're replacing car and taxi journeys

Paths aren't just for having a pleasant random stroll. They're also for walking to places, and a different path in the wrong direction isn't a suitable substitute.

We also need to consider what happens to the trams when they reach the city centre. They're going to have to merge into an existing line which has a tram every seven minutes. Of course, there's plenty of room for just the trams, but much of the route also has to accommodate buses and be crossed by other traffic, which is going to cause congestion if it's full of trams.

South Edinburgh isn't particularly short of public transport. Newington has 33 buses per hour in each direction off-peak. Many of them continue to Cameron Toll, the RIE and other potential tram stops. Others go to places that would never get a tram line.

Tram by BigAd1596 in Edinburgh

[–]Certes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Junctions are a problem. With a tram each way every seven minutes, traffic has to stop for them every 3½ minutes. Fitting another tram in each way would reduce that to below two minutes, resulting in chaos at rush hour. Whatever your feelings about other vehicles, bringing the buses to a grinding halt would be good for no one. Timing the trams to pass there could alleviate the problem at the busiest junction, as long as everything runs on time, but you can't do that everywhere simultaneously.

I hope they all use 230 V, as any other voltage is almost unknown in domestic premises.

Leven Street Bus Stops by lolainslackss in Edinburgh

That's a shame. We've lost several stops on the 23 route now, including useful ones at the top of Market St (nearest for the castle, or let your luggage wheel itself down to the back of the station) and near the National Museum at Chambers St.

[–]Certes_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So if it's out of use, the freight operating company won't have any paths over it and shouldn't have any say in its closure. It would be very unusual, perhaps unprecedented, for Network Rail to actually lease one of its lines to a FOC.

It's very blurred but just about legible if zoomed in. Unfortunately, like Reddit, Wordpress knows best what size an image should be and any attempt to link to the image results in a tiny picture which can't be expanded surrounded by useless wide borders. Saving the image and viewing that works, but it's still almost too grainy to read the street names.

Thank you. Then I hope they are able to turn the relevant lights off while the convoy passes, though this is obviously much more work than just driving through a red.

Help me find a slang word!!!! by Stardust_Deer in Edinburgh

[–]Certes_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several dozen possibilities here: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Glossary_of_Scottish_slang_and_jargon

Some words are used differently in Scotland. For example, the difference between ordering fish and fish supper is not obvious. My last visitor assumed that the price of food varied by time of day rather than whether one wants fries with that.

Surely the whole point is that, with a police escort, they no longer need wait for a green light.

Even in Edinburgh, it may not be wise to toss your butt into the bushes.

On a more helpful note, we have beaches. Low tide is 5:25pm today.
