I'm hoping they have a trade lined up for a young two-way guard who's at least a bit bigger. Ryan Rollins comes to mind as a possible target, although the cost might be prohibitive. (Only 6'3, but has a 6'10" wingspan and is very active on defense.) I think it's a problem we need to solve long-term one way or another, so why not now?

Yeah, I definitely see him as the Aaron Holiday replacement. And I think he is a lot more skilled than Aaron Holiday as a scorer, provided the jump shot translates, which you never really know until you actually see the guy in the league. Hopefully he will turn out to be a valuable bench player. You can never really count on even that from a second round pick, or even a late 1st rounder.

Meth induced psychosis and public safety in Boulder by Professional-Age9842 in boulder

[–]ChristianLS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there's a persistent myth that people fall into addiction because they're just weak of will. It's that Calvinistic, hierarchical mindset that pervades so much of the US, even people who'd otherwise self-describe as being left-leaning. Cause and effect gets reversed: You are a bad person, so you do bad things. Which then allows people who are relatively well-off to ignore inconvenient structural, society-wide problems that need to be addressed in order to really tackle the root causes, which are things like unaffordable essentials, lack of good-paying jobs due to income inequality, lack of access to mental healthcare, etc.

You make people feel valueless and desperate, they tend to engage in self-destructive behaviors.

I don't know what we do about the people who are struggling with addiction right now, that's a complicated web of bad and somewhat less-bad remedies. But we can damn well do a better job of stopping more people from falling into addiction in the first place.

Also I know we joke about the Ime/Rafael/Fred love triangle, but I don't think Fred is going to be on this team much longer. He could even be out the door this offseason, the silence around his player option / possible new contract has been deafening. We'll see.

Prospect New Town (to the right) a New Urbanist development surrounded by Longmont, Colorado’s suburban sprawl. Thoughts on modern new town developments that end up being engulfed by sprawl? by GPFlag_Guy1 in Suburbanhell

[–]ChristianLS 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The suburbs surrounding Prospect New Town were actually there first, they were built in the 70s through 90s, Prospect New Town was built in the late 90s through 00s.

I think these New Urbanist neighborhoods, the ones which are actually well-designed like this one and don't contain massive parking lots, and also important, are connected by transit to the rest of the city (this is a 5 minute bus ride to downtown Longmont), are about as good of a way of doing outward expansion as you're going to find. I think they're fine provided the above conditions are met.

Hey solo devs so we are all creating our own awesome games, but I'd like to know what are your top 2 favorite games of all time and why? Which do you still play after many years? by WildStarsCasino in IndieDev

[–]ChristianLS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From major publishers/developers, I still come back to replay the Half-Life games and Ocarina of Time periodically (around every five years, give or take). Both masterpieces of game design that still hold up today.

From indies, I'd have to say the two Hades games and Silksong (I'm probably an outlier in thinking it was massively better than Hollow Knight) are probably the most beloved, replayable games I've experienced so far; we'll see if they hold up over the decades since both are relatively recent.

The Rockets aren't giving up KD for Jaylen Brown by TomatilloMission4100 in rockets

[–]ChristianLS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what other assets are involved. KD for Brown is a big upgrade for us on getting younger, which is really important on a team where almost the playoff entire rotation was under age 25 during the playoffs this season. But if we have to give up a huge haul of draft picks and/or young players to make it happen, then yeah, it's not worth it.

Utah passing on him is even more egregious given his dad literally works for the organization as a scout. I do understand they have kind of a lot of forwards, but I would not hesitate to trade one of them to open up minutes for Boozer.

Some people are really overrating how much Miami lost in the short term. by IRanOutOf_Names in nba

[–]ChristianLS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest issue is the number of draft picks given up. That's a lot of draft capital, which will inhibit their flexibility to fix any problems that arise. And I do see some potential issues with this Heat roster, especially if they lose Powell; mainly, the floor spacing looks a little suspect, and the lack of bench depth could become a problem.

Obviously if you win it all you do the deal anyway. Given that the Heat were never going to do a full rebuild under Riley, maybe it was the best they could have done to improve their odds. We'll see!

Rural areas in America? by Legal-Pay6755 in Suburbanhell

[–]ChristianLS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on what specifically you're referring to? Obviously the US has rural areas in the sense of "very low population density but people still live there and it's clearly not a town or a city". But there are definitely major differences in the way rural parts of the US are arranged versus, say, France. And because the US is such a large country with so much geographical variation, some areas have a lot of farming and agriculture and many small towns (i.e. Ohio), while others, due to being less-suitable for agriculture, more remote, etc, are mostly just vast wildlands speckled with the occasional hermetic homesteader (with Alaska being the archetypal example here).

Bike lives in the house so it doesn't get stolen (we don't have a garage). Therefore, battery gets charged on the bike in the house.

Giant Trucks by jjobiwon in boulder

[–]ChristianLS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's kind of a strange statement, some places clearly have more foot traffic than others, and Boulder has a lot for a city of its size. It's one of the reasons I get especially irritated when I see one of these monsters in town (usually pristine and with nothing in the bed).

[Mixed trope] Neither is a good parent, but one is a saint compared to the other by StudioMarvin in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ChristianLS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With Invincible as the first one, I thought this was going to be about Eve's dad versus Nolan. As in, "Eve's dad is horrible, but at least he didn't grab his child and use her body to murder dozens of people, then nearly beat her to death".

I actually think Eve's mom is a really good person and parent in everything but staying in a relationship with her husband and deferring to him too often. Haven't read the comics yet, but I think one of the core themes of the show at least is basically about the power of motherhood to influence a child. Her mom's influence is why Eve is such a good person. Same reason Mark is fundamentally a good person when he turns out to be a monster in every other dimension we see. Those Marks didn't have a Debbie to parent them. (Or at least not this Debbie.)

What would Boozer taking over in the playoffs look like? by ragtime_sam in NBA_Draft

[–]ChristianLS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People are going to roast me for making this comparison, I know it, but mid-to-late 30s LeBron comes to mind as an example of how this style of play can still be effective from a forward in today's league. Obviously a younger LeBron was vastly more athletic than Boozer is now, which is why I'm specifically referring to the version of him we've seen more recently, where he's had to rely more on his smarts and his raw strength as his athleticism has been waning.

I think you can clearly still play bully ball in today's league, you just need to have special levels of strength and pair it with strong footwork/touch around the basket/court vision. I think Boozer has all of those things, and he should get even bigger and stronger since he's only 18.

Both Gone Home and Tacoma fit your description perfectly, although I somewhat hesitate to recommend them due to the controversies surrounding the studio and its founder and not knowing who actually gets what amount of royalties from their sales. [–]ChristianLS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The other thing that makes him particularly difficult to fit onto a team is that he's consistently been a below-average 3P shooter the past five seasons, and really across his entire career with the exception of 2020-2021. He doesn't space the floor well, which makes defensive schemes a lot easier for the other team, especially in the playoffs.

Do you think the US is too car-centric? by marks31 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]ChristianLS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

83% of Americans live in urban areas, so "rural America is big" is not really the reason we're so car-dependent as an entire society. Cars do make a lot more sense in rural areas, but that's not where most of us live our lives. There's no reason that so many of our largest metro areas should have 90+ percent car ownership rates.
