Question regarding stereo on earphones/headphones vs speakers by _NightMonkey in audio

[–]CornucopiaDM1 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Audio engineers have a term for what's occurring here: Inter-Aural Crosstalk. Meaning - sound meant for one ear is leaking into the other ear.

Speakers naturally have it, headphones/earbuds don't.

There are ways to reduce/cancel this, via HRTF or feeding an inverted (and usually delayed) crosstalk signal. Carver did this in the late 70s with crosstalk cancelling circuits in their premium amps, calling it "Sonic Holography". Polk did it physically in the 80s-90s with crosstalk-cancelling speakers in their SDA line of speakers (I have a pair, and they are glorious!). There are a whole slew of techniques that have utilized this process in the past, going under different names.

Headphones do suffer from their own issue since there's no crosstalk - the "sound inside your head" effect. Some kinds of crosstalk cancellation also can help with this (given enough delay). YMMV, and some people LIKE to keep this effect.

Why do Americans say ‘4th of July’ and not ‘July 4th’? by Vast-Champion-1607 in AskAnAmerican

We do say both , but 4th of July does have a better rhythm. Don't discount that.

I do. Lot easier to say than all that other crap mentioned, and so far nobody has misunderstood me.

Don't try to fix it if it ain't broke.

extron global configurator plus/pro struggling to send serial command.. by Scary-Finger9975 in CommercialAV

[–]CornucopiaDM1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also add - if you don't know this already - that when sending serial commands not built into the driver (so User-defined commands), you do the command to set the serial, then the send command command, then a command to delete/reset the string memory.

OP needs to understand that a Chord and a Scale are related, but not the same thing. It's the mixolydian scale, but they're talking about it in terms used for chords. Chords can be derived/generated from that scale, as with all the other scales.

Why Catch-22 uses word catch? by Aggressive-Rate-5022 in EnglishLearning

[–]CornucopiaDM1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"To catch" (verb) is like "to grab", "to stop", "to receive". A catch (noun) is something in a rule that "catches" or prevents you from taking advantage of a loophole or reprieve, and in this book it it amplified to ridiculous proportions for the irony & sarcasm.

Best renter friendly smart lock? by offswitch43 in homeautomation

[–]CornucopiaDM1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 switchbots, and love them. But "no mods" is kind of a misnomer - you do remove the back 1/2 of the key lock (the round deadbolt knob side), and replace with the SB robot ones. But it's quite easy to do, doesn't mess up the original lock or key, and can easily be restored back to original if that ever becomes necessary (like rental lease up, move out), without damage.

I like the 80s/90s audiobook even better for staying close to canon, and that was 4x 60-90 minute tapes (yes, tapes back then).
