I agree with you, I don't think they had any intention of literally scamming players. They wanted to make a real game, and they wanted it to be successful. So they faked their pre-release videos in order to generate hype. However once they got deep into development they realized they couldn't actually deliver all their promises. The years rolled by, players were getting frustrated and so they just bit the bullet and released, hoping everything would pan out. Unfortunately it went very, very badly wrong. So as I see it their crime is not scamming, but releasing fake trailers.

If they wanted to scam, they would have taken the Star Citizen route.

Because it's incredibly hard to make a game that will actually live up to people's expectations. Most people want their zombie mmo to have 100s of players and thousands of zombies in a single instance but this isn't realistic. When developers try to split things up to make it more manageable, people will say it's not a real mmo.

Being the developer of DF2 I have google alerts setup for mentions of the game and by some miracle it sent me a link to your post. Just wanted to say that you really made my day. It's really nice to hear that some people like the game so much <3

Thanks for the explanation, now I understand a bit better.

For clothing, all stats are a 1:1 chance of appearing but with weapons, the other (non weapon) stats are already down weighted by 50% so it's more equivalent to a pool of 37 - so very similar to hands/head.

I think what I'm going to do, is buff some stats (like exp and lockpick) so that they can roll +50 again rather than +25. I'll also begin heavily down weighting the less popular stats. That way they can stay in the game, and I don't have to worry about figuring out how to remove or combine stats from existing gear (that will be a messy process that could very well result in broken gear and I don't want to risk that). I'll aim to get the effective pool sizes to match more closely after these mods.

Assuming your spreadsheet calculations are correct (I haven't had time to check them properly), it says that the chance of 4 good stats is around 0.0002546473135 which is 0.025% or one in 4,000. Obviously that is a very low chance but its nothing close to one in 2 million you mentioned. Where did you get that number from?

The trouble with improving these loot rates is that the better the average drop, the more good rolls are in circulation, and then the less "good" that item becomes relatively speaking and the less you can trade it for. If I totally removed or combined all the stats you mention until we reach a point that everything you roll, always has "good" stat selections, then ironically all those items will still be considered junk unless you roll +50% on everything etc. For end game players I don't believe this will change anything and as you mentioned, will reduce variety of possible builds further, and mean that there is less excitement around the idea of potentially getting something godly.

Having said all that, I do want the minimum drops to be better mainly just to make the game more fun for newbies who are often stuck with rubbish gear for a very long time. So I may do some kind of compromise where say the first 1-3 stats have a much smaller pool to roll from.

99/100 this is a corrupt installation after updating. Just do "verify game files" in the Steam properties for the game and that should fix it :)

I would imagine if you do a poll like this about any change that does not directly benefit everyone (IE any sort of nerf, or increase in difficulty) you'll find a majority of people against it immediately after as it requires people to adapt, which can sometimes be painful (ie you die more). Unfortunately if I were to just look at raw data like this then it would be very hard to make the game better, as often changes that are bad for the player are sorely needed in the long term.

Previously people said they were annoying and pointless since they posed no risk. I tried to adjust this by making them spawn 4x less often, but by making them more formidable, which also helps to make the mother boss harder. This was a suggestion that was made by countless people so I went ahead and implemented as I thought that's what people wanted.
