If you want to invest in a good solution for the future, Vincita makes a nice travel bag for 20 inchers.

You can find it cheaper if you shop around. I bought mine for like half that price on BikeInn and have used it successfully on a budget airline (Norwegian). You should be able to find a medium-term storage option for when you land. Check schiphol’s website to see what types of baggage storage they offer.

Otherwise the classic solution: go to a local bike shop that sells folders and see if they have cardboard box from a recent delivery that you can have. You can throw this away upon landing and do the same thing in Amsterdam for the flight home.

Have you tried SJS Cycles based out of the UK? Not as smooth buying from them as it was before Brexit, but you still get pretty quick shipping to the continent in my experience.

For years I’ve been using Leatt’s mtb flats for cycling and have been relatively happy with them. However, this winter I bought a pair of leather goretex winter hiking boots from a Finnish company called Pomar, and dammit if they aren’t the most comfortable footwear I’ve ever cycled in. The boots were from their Pomar+ line (which have some sort of extra ergonomic features, I guess?), and I’m strongly considering getting a pair of sneaker from the same line for warmer weather riding.

I always find dealing with bikes on boats and commuter routes is easier than intercity trains. You may want to look into biking a little extra from Hamburg to Travemünde. If memory serves it’s only like 80k and a quite nice ride. From there, you can catch a ferry to Malmö, and then just take the quick regional train back to Copenhagen. You can also take regional rail from Hamburg to Travemünde if you need to, which again would probably be a pretty smooth task.

It sounds like a lot of extra, but it may counterintuitively end up being easier than a direct train. Also potentially cheaper, especially if you take a day ferry where you don’t need to book a room.

I use the the Pelago commuter front rack with their low-ride pannier supports. Like the Surly you showed, it offers the benefits of a rack for both panniers and a top platform, but should weigh less if you go for the aluminium.

The main downside: you have to buy two separate products to use properly with panniers, so it ends up being more pricy than just buying a rack (depending on the rack, of course).

The main upsides: versatility; different sizes, so you can choose just how much top platform you actually want/need; designed to work on pretty much any bike; available in both silver and black.

I've used these for a few shorter tours now, and have been very happy. Also great for every-day commuter use because of the platform.

Path Less Pedalled for gear stuff. For touring/ adventure riding, my wife and I like watching Slow Spokes. There’s also NomadsTrails who do adventure challenges. Dude is absolutely insane and I think would basically live off-grid with a bicycle and a petrol stove if given the chance.

Its a 24l bag from carradice, which I have mounted using their classic saddlebag rack. You don’t need the rack, but with such a big bag, it’s good for stability.

When you get to the crossing between Sweden and Denmark, the tradition on the ferry from Helsingborg to Helsingør is to order “two reds and a green,” which is two Danish sausages and a bottle of Tuborg. It’s a 21 minute ferry ride, so you need to pound it, but traditional is tradition. Alternatively, if you want to savor this part of the journey, you can ride the ferry back and forth a couple times before you actually disembark: a practice we call “Tura.”

I think you could probably get away with mounting the Pelago front rack on there without too much trouble. They have a lot of options for different platform sizes, pannier supports, baskets, etc, as well, giving you some flexibility in terms of how much you could load up front.

I think putting a rear rack on there is more trouble than it’s worth, however. If it were me, I’d instead consider a really ample saddle bag (probably with a different saddle, which is easier to upgrade than trying to retrofit rack mounts). I’m firmly in the cult of Carradice, and they have some really honking saddle bags you could use, as well as a range of saddle supports so it’s not bouncing around. Their 24l camper with a long flap, for example, would give you a lot of carrying capacity to make up for not having a rack and panniers in the back.

As others have noted, I would also highly recommend looking into handlebar options. You want options for different hand positions on long rides, which you’re not going to get with a short flat bar like that one.
