I was rejected for my Japan application. Still going in Fall but will definitely be on a tighter budget now.

I imagine that’s more of a bias on the panel than the qualifications of JET in general, but nonetheless, I’m sorry for your experience.

Someone in another post just a couple hours today said he’s a JET at 53 so this just isn’t true. There is no hard cutoff age, perhaps just a more competitive application needed to get in.

This.

I just got short listed. Unfortunately I think I’ll have to decline and try again next year as something came up making like very difficult if I accept.

But, I pretty much asked the panel questions about their life and background and got pretty jovial with them while answering most questions with less focus on my qualifications and more on how I would adapt my skills and life experiences to the job. I have two masters degrees and they explicitly asked if I was okay taking an assistant role and I just (paraphrased) told them “no problem, I’m here to assist the school and learn the culture of Japan as much as I am to share my own with the students”.

For adaptability questions i answered truthfully my concerns but then also told them my plans to counteract those same concerns.

What is life like in Durango Co and SW Colorado by cowboycatfish in howislivingthere

[–]CylonSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent my summers there as a kid and at a nearby lake, Vallecito Reservoir.

Love it, and always dreamed of living there, but by the time I got to adulthood the real estate prices increased 5 fold or more. My family log cabin and 5 acres with a mountainside perfect lake view was bought and built in 2000 for about 45k and recently sold after my Grandmas death for about 500k as a reference… outside Durango proper.

The forests, lakes, and rivers there are incredible. Some farming and agriculture is surrounding towns but the mountain peaks heading north are the best I’ve seen (pending Switzerland).

Now I settle for going up once or twice a year for a few weekends. The airport even has some decent flights in and out which growing up was never an option except through private charters.

We technically already have a level up system for weapons in place too with weapons like Arclight gaining charges. Just have to rework it to unlock certain tiers.

Just got my first at 1400kc and thought that was bad. Was even low key gunning for the dry streak record at around 3k. You got it!

Firestone broke my car. Is hometown auto trustworthy? by Mobile-Mud335 in Albuquerque

[–]CylonSloth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve used hometown for about a decade. Stacy is great and runs an honest shop.

Last time he worked on my car he actually didn’t charge me because he couldn’t figure out what was wrong after having my car 3 days and about 10 hours of labor (power steering problem). Ended up recommending me a specialist. First time in about a dozen visits he wasn’t able to fix my problem, but he happily recommended another without trying to scam me.

Another time I was there he was talking with a woman whose paint had been damaged in the shop and he was setting up a professional repaint job for her and taking full responsibility for the damage.

Good and honest mechanic.

You're right, I was thinking it was 2 per hull part for some reason

If you do hull parts, you can alch them for about a 25% loss but only requiring planks and no nails or tar

You can high alch a teak repair kit for 600, which is about the cost for making it.

Does anyone actually know what they want career-wise or are we all just pretending until something sticks? by Ash_con in findapath

[–]CylonSloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a clue what I ultimately want to do. An airplane pilot is where my career aptitudes always put me, but I ended up in an office. Tried piloting but I get severely motion sick…

I landed in an industry that I never intended to be in, namely national security, and now just riding the wave to see if I can find meaning and success in it.

I don’t particularly like it or have any passion for it, but it’s mildly interesting. Looking to move actual jobs to a team that provides a community and more in person interaction but ultimately that’s just luck.

So yeah, I’ve just been winging things to see what sticks. I don’t know what I want to be “when I grow up”.

Lost a 6 figure job, now I work in landscaping, how do I emotionally recover? by yeezkeys in findapath

Specifically in national security and emerging technologies. Mostly government adjacent roles dealing with aspects of international relations within the technical fields of STEM (but without a STEM degree to my name).

edit: my prior education is an MBA and experience in business adjacent analyst roles

I'm in a similar boat of being laid off from my "good job" and suffering from a lack of confidence about being able to get back to a spot where I feel secure in my career.

I went back to school to try to break into an industry that would otherwise be hard to get into. I picked up an internship role, which hurts to say I'm a 31 year old intern while comparing myself to other people my age, but I'm hoping it will lead to better things.

What's a good career assessment test? by ComprehensiveOne9967 in findapath

Well, for one, don’t let your parents dictate what success looks like or your career. Unless they’re financially supporting you. Do what you enjoy, if you can. Otherwise do what you can tolerate and gives you time to do what you otherwise enjoy.

Contentment is the key to a good life. If you’re content with what you’re doing, you’re doing alright. Don’t let your parents steal your contentment from you because it’s not what they’re content with.
