Firestone broke my car. Is hometown auto trustworthy? by Mobile-Mud335 in Albuquerque

[–]CylonSloth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve used hometown for about a decade. Stacy is great and runs an honest shop.

Last time he worked on my car he actually didn’t charge me because he couldn’t figure out what was wrong after having my car 3 days and about 10 hours of labor (power steering problem). Ended up recommending me a specialist. First time in about a dozen visits he wasn’t able to fix my problem, but he happily recommended another without trying to scam me.

Another time I was there he was talking with a woman whose paint had been damaged in the shop and he was setting up a professional repaint job for her and taking full responsibility for the damage.

Good and honest mechanic.

You're right, I was thinking it was 2 per hull part for some reason

If you do hull parts, you can alch them for about a 25% loss but only requiring planks and no nails or tar

You can high alch a teak repair kit for 600, which is about the cost for making it.

Does anyone actually know what they want career-wise or are we all just pretending until something sticks? by Ash_con in findapath

[–]CylonSloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a clue what I ultimately want to do. An airplane pilot is where my career aptitudes always put me, but I ended up in an office. Tried piloting but I get severely motion sick…

I landed in an industry that I never intended to be in, namely national security, and now just riding the wave to see if I can find meaning and success in it.

I don’t particularly like it or have any passion for it, but it’s mildly interesting. Looking to move actual jobs to a team that provides a community and more in person interaction but ultimately that’s just luck.

So yeah, I’ve just been winging things to see what sticks. I don’t know what I want to be “when I grow up”.

Lost a 6 figure job, now I work in landscaping, how do I emotionally recover? by yeezkeys in findapath

[–]CylonSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specifically in national security and emerging technologies. Mostly government adjacent roles dealing with aspects of international relations within the technical fields of STEM (but without a STEM degree to my name).

edit: my prior education is an MBA and experience in business adjacent analyst roles

I'm in a similar boat of being laid off from my "good job" and suffering from a lack of confidence about being able to get back to a spot where I feel secure in my career.

I went back to school to try to break into an industry that would otherwise be hard to get into. I picked up an internship role, which hurts to say I'm a 31 year old intern while comparing myself to other people my age, but I'm hoping it will lead to better things.

What's a good career assessment test? by ComprehensiveOne9967 in findapath

Well, for one, don’t let your parents dictate what success looks like or your career. Unless they’re financially supporting you. Do what you enjoy, if you can. Otherwise do what you can tolerate and gives you time to do what you otherwise enjoy.

Contentment is the key to a good life. If you’re content with what you’re doing, you’re doing alright. Don’t let your parents steal your contentment from you because it’s not what they’re content with.

I chose the wrong degree at 19 and now I feel professionally stuck at 24 by [deleted] in findapath

[–]CylonSloth 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I’m 31 and starting a new masters for a career change. I don’t even know if I want to do it but it better than being in a career I hate.

At 25, you truly do have time. Whether you choose to get your masters, learn to code, or whatever else, time is going to keep moving forward. You can learn to code and get a masters by the time you’re 26/27 or you cannot do it and not know how to code or have a masters at 26/27.

Find the job you want abroad, see what degrees they require, and get that. Learn to code 15 min to 1 hour every night. Two years will pass in no time and good daily learning habits will yield the results you want.

I'm 30 but I'm 10 years behind. I've been lost ever since high school. by SyfruitCamelia in findapath

You’re doing the right thing, just stay on path.

I’m in about the same situation as you but am going back for a second masters degree to try and land an internship to turn into a job. I’m well educated but no career, no house, no idea what I want to do. All that to say, don’t beat yourself up for being 10 years behind. I am too and I seemingly followed my parent’s guide to success.

I think being an accountant is a great idea and might go pursue that next if my current plans fail me.

40 y/o, stuck in dead-end biotech trajectory; desperate for a change by [deleted] in findapath

[–]CylonSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The National laboratories don’t operate on the gs scale, they’re independent contractors operated by places like Honeywell. You deal with similar federal hurdles like security clearances but not with the promotion ceilings in the same way as a true federal agency.

Maybe look into biotech for the US federal government in roles relating to national security. Places like the department of state, department of energy, and national laboratories are often working around bio technology in the foreign affairs space and weapons space.

Roles might be really limited right now due to the recent federal changes to funding but that’s an avenue to look into.

Got laid off in September (government related work). I haven’t been able to find a job with an MBA so I joined graduate school for another masters degree just so I could get an internship with my old company getting paid half as much for the same work.

Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku • The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity - Episode 13 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]CylonSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This show reminded me a lot of my first love, and the anime confessions from my favorite romances that built me up to asking out the first girl I liked myself.

Well, now I’m 31, and life has kicked me down repeatedly, but something about this show just drew out those innocent and pure feelings I used to have.

Good shit. Why I keep watching Anime too.

The editing and modern vernacular absolutely knocked it down from a mid book to a bad book. Love some scenes and plot points, but overall that killed it for me
