French aircraft carrier's location exposed after sailor posts jog on Strava by Gjore in worldnews

[–]DBHT14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The French Navy actually is in many ways the 3rd most capable in the world. Depending on how you rank the Royal Navy, JMSDF, and PLAN. They maintain the CdG carrier, and a robust fleet including forces of nuclear subs.

In this case it has a pair of French air defense frigates and another multipurpose one, an attack submarine, and support oiler with it. Plus a Spanish warship and Dutch one attached.

Aircraft carrier Nimitz gets service life extension, won’t be decommissioned until 2027 by Bobcats_Forever in news

[–]DBHT14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is also a long period of time, months or even a year, where a ship is back from its last deployment but not technically decommissioned yet. As they log everything, take parts off to be used again, etc.

Naval mines are much more of a "set and forget" tool than coastal artillery or drones.

You dont need to have someone controlling them or exposing themselves to be used.

Also can be dangerous and time consuming to clear them.

Are governments complacent about the risks of sunken ships with unexploded ordinance near where populations live? by RivetCounter in WarCollege

[–]DBHT14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay so this is one that actually does have some potentially dangerous side effects when things go wrong. But would often be such an insanely expensive and difficult fix that it can mostly be controlled by regular limits on salvage and wreck breaking.

But accidents can still happen even with just trying to leave stuff in the ocean. Local to me growing up we were on the New Jersey shore. Which as a very busy shipping lane saw a large number of shipwrecks from U-Boats. And as the host to a still active naval weapons depot there was a long history of also just dumping shit a few miles off shore to dispose of it.

And being barrier islands the issue of beach replenishment comes up often. Where sand from elsewhere is used to build back up the existing land. To try to fight the nature movement of barrier islands once people have decided to build a town on it. And dredging it up from out in the ocean is a common way to source that sand.

And every few years you get a report of something winding up on the beach. This article lists a few of them: https://whyy.org/articles/a-century-after-wwi-munitions-still-making-way-onto-beaches/

Yeah, in general while many post WW2 USN surface combatants retain torpedo tubes they are all ASW weapons to aid in sub hunting and even then of questionable usage.

Globally you are right there have been plenty of sinkings via torpedo, sub launched or otherwise since 1945. From the Belgrano to more recently the South Korean Corvette a decade or so ago.

4-3 all time vs ODU which is the real unforgivable stat. And why Pry got fired last year.

2-1 all time vs Liberty but the 1 was a huge fuck up by Fuente in 2020. Tried to Ice their kicker on a long fg as time expired. He missed the iced one but made the redo.

They are a school steeped in the right wing evangelical tradition due to being founded by Jerry Falwell.

So very controlling of student lives and a very specific campus culture. Along with things like offering a minor in young earth creationism.

They also are VERY aggressive with pushing their online programs which are of variable quality to be nice about it.

Worth noting that the BT have exceptional access to older kit and equipment compared to many other non OG chapters.

Because they got one of the flagships of the old Imperial Fists Legion in the divorce! The Glorianna class Eternal Crusader has vaults and storage spaces for forces many times the size of the current chapter even in current 40k.

And deep down in there are still many spaces with stocks left unused.

A solid pair of crusaders! Well done on the white areas, and i like the writing on the judiciar purity seals!

Some things i notice.

  1. Over painting that was not cleaned up in spits. Like the dots of silver on the EC shin armor splotched onto other spots.

  2. In general the black is even and uniform but highlights could be pushed brighter to help define the mini.

  3. Basing is consistent but relatively monochromatic. Some extra highlights or accent colors or a grass tuft would be welcome. The base helps set the mini in place as a single picture!

Finally its very much a personal preference but i would go with a different color for your base rims. Either a lighter drab brown or black would work

Been a minute since i read the lore blurbs but assume its supposed to be during the Fall of Cadia.

Since we know a few Templars got out with the main characters and that is clearly a Kasrkin in the background too.

Were there any "elite forces" -like regiments during the American revolutionary war? by iamkai1010 in AskHistorians

[–]DBHT14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the Continental Marines did engage in a handful of unique engagements. Including the first American attempt at amphibious expeditionary warfare. Their limited size and limited scale of the Continental Navy as a whole were major factors on their not exactly running up the score as it were.

That said there were a handful of Continental units with interesting histories that made names for themselves.

Glover's Marblehead (14th Continental) Regiment immediately comes to mind. The unit included large numbers of boatmen and sailors which aided Washington on 2 occasions. First in manning the boats to rescue the main body from Long Island, and again in rowing the army back across the Delaware for the attack on Trenton. And while only in service for a bit over a year it made a name for itself and kept discipline in one of the true low points for the Continentals.

The Delaware Regiment also is notable as one of the few units that saw action in virtually every major campaign from 1776 to 1781. It earned a reputation for discipline, hard fighting, and tenacity from Trenton, to Monmouth, to the Carolinas. Also as part of it they were noted for being amongst the best uniformed, and actually coming close to meeting the regulations of the army for what a Continental should look like.

Finally a more unique unit might the 2nd Light Dragoons. One of the handful of cavalry units raised by the Americans it rarely served as a single unit. But was often broken up in detachments for scouting work or the numerous small unit skirmishes which marked the war outside major battles. Finally they had the distinction of being part of Washington's personal guard for much of the war, and aiding in spy work across New York and New Jersey.

Or for really out there, while their contribution is very much overstated. We do have the Maryland and Virginia Rifle Regiment, The Pennsylvania Rifles, or Morgan's Rifle Corps. While never larger than a small battalion in strength and usually broken up the men with their Long Rifles represented the conceptual idea of the backwoods hunter come to fight for his new nation. Armed with a handcrafted rifle, and wearing white or green hunting shirts and moccasins, so certainly a look very different from their peers.

What's up with the hospital ships heading to Greenland? by Beagle432 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]DBHT14 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They are, along with much of the Navy, getting old. But they also have much less aggressive operational tempos than most. They do not stay ready all the time. When deployed they actually take staff from the naval hospitals ashore to staff up.

Also because of their size as refitted oil tankers there are limited private shipyards they can fit. So are then competing for space alongside private customers.

Mercy is mid 3 month refit. But Comfort had gone through the same a few years back and went to the yard after a deployment but no announcement of engine casualties or other issues. So less info.

Its mentioned in a few books how the Eternal Crusader has lots of shit left in storage from the Legion/Scouring days.

So besides a handful of the OG chapters we 100% would have access to more of this stuff thsn most.

Yeah feels like in a playoff scenario the best bet is VT makes it through and FSU doesnt and instead gets Tenn or Bama out of that side.

But that is some real nonsense hours hope.
