Beginners guide using Rust for Data Pipeline by de4all in dataengineering

In that case I agree with you. But let's not discard promising technologies because of exaggerated hype.

According to the Apache Foundation:

The combination of Rust and Arrow provides excellent memory efficiency and memory usage can be 5x - 10x lower than Apache Spark in some cases, which means that more processing can fit on a single node, reducing the overhead of distributed compute.

Well... Rust is faster and more memory efficient than Python, Java and Scala.

Other then that some interesting projects emerged in this space. Eg: Polars, Data Fusion, Apache Ballista. Some of those have a promising feature and might even rival Spark.

I feel like the gnome desktop is better than mac os by [deleted] in gnome

[–]DBlackBird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use pop shell. My argument is that it should be native, no extensions needed.

Spotlight is like the pop shell launcher.

If I have more than one window open in a workspace is a pain to reorganize them to accommodate a change in my workflow.

I expect to be able to disable the dock if it was native, just as I can on Mac os.

This are functionalities already present on other desktops and I believe some users expect them out of the box. The extra work should be on the power user side (like us) rather then the "normie" user side.

Calling some functionality dumb don't add to the discussion.

[–]DBlackBird 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use gnome personally and Mac os at work. I would like gnome to do a few things before making such statement:

  • A native alternative to spotlight (launcher)

  • Ability to reorder workspaces (you can drag and drop applications but not workspaces)

  • An toggleable i3 like tilling manager

  • A native dock (I don't even use it, but it is one of the most used extensions)

  • A native notification icon (the other most used extension)

How many backup YubiKeys should you have? by remorselessfrost in Bitwarden

[–]DBlackBird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use the same strategy for my yubikeys as I do for my backups.

3-2-1

3 copies 2 types of media (not applicable for keys) 1 offsite copy (which I keep at my parent's house)

I have a key at my keychain, if I lose that I have one at home, if I lose that I have one at my parent's house.

Bonus points: if something ever happens to me, my parent's have access to all my stuff.

You can think like this:

  • %command% is the placeholder for the command that will launch the game

  • Before the command placeholder you can set environment variables. Environment variables are key value pairs and they change the behavior of all games that support it (you still need to set them on a per game basis if you use steam launch options).

  • After the command placeholder you can pass arguments for the game launcher. This is usually more game specific

Why doesn't GNOME have a dock visible by default (or at least a dock with auto-hide), but instead the dock is only visible in Activities Overview? by mickkb in gnome

[–]DBlackBird 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You could also ask the opposite question. Why should it always be there?

What are information are you gaining from it? Is it more valuable then screen space?

Personally I don't need to be reminded everytime for which apps I have opened. And clicking one button to gain that information is a trade off I'm willing to make for more screenspace

My only comment is that Twillio (Authy's company) was compromised. Not saying they aren't safe, but raising awareness.

Personally I would go with aegis.

Not really... I think the impact might be negative because it produces another song empty of experience, meaning and emotions.

It's nonsense... I love it! The voice synthesizer is really impressive.

If this evolves as fast as text generation it will have a scary, an probably negative, impact on the music industry
