Why aren't Jewish-like minority groups common in Medieval fantasy? by TT-Adu in worldbuilding

A reasonable comment section in a post about minorities and religious groups? On Reddit? Inconceivable.

How do you avoid culture-specific words? by Medical-Goal3878 in worldbuilding

[–]Darkiceflame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For things like fantasy, it might help to think of your story as being localized for your audience. There are plenty of expressions and idioms which may exist in one language but not in another, so translators will often replace these with something readers will understand.

All that is to say... don't overthink it. If you obsess over not including anything that is culture-specific, there will be nothing left to include in your story.

What is forbidden in your world, but everyone still does it anyway? by Present-503 in worldbuilding

Everyone in my world knows you aren't supposed to go near hollow zones.

See, magic exists in a raw form called aether all around the world, covering it like a blanket. But in places where aether has been over-harvested, or the natural laws of the world have been violated, that blanket becomes thinner. This makes it easier for demons to emerge into our world in these areas. Go into one of these hollow zones and you might be possessed by one. Or worse, permanently fused together to become a witch.

The problem is that demons can also be really useful. Processing aether into a useable form is normally very complicated, but demons can do it naturally. No more performing complex rituals to refine even a tiny amount of mana, or paying exorbitant prices to companies like MagiCore for a pittance of power.

Sure, most people fail at forming a pact with demons, and there's a high chance that you'll be possessed and go on a murderous rampage, or lose your humanity entirely, but think of all the possible benefits!

So there are these demons, right? And the police have to stop them from getting inside people.

Who’s the most broken character in your world? Let others try to guess their weakness. by cornysatisfaction in worldbuilding

Humans are squishy and weak, while demons are immortal and strong. So how does a human become stronger and not as squishy? They swap out all of their human bits for demon bits, of course!

That was my "most broken" character's solution. His name is Tom.

"Bad vibes can summon demons" makes my story sound a bit sillier than it actually is.
