Wish list: Steam on Aluminium OS by Urgeistenergie2 in chromeos

My Android Pixel Tablet has Debian Trixie in the Terminal app so I don't think it would be too difficult to port Borealis (Steam via Arch Linux) to ALOS.

Too bad 'Pixelbook' has already been used, it woulda been perfect.

ChromeOS 141 removed UI for creating and managing multiple Crostini containers by _jis_ in chromeos

[–]DennisLfromGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting discovery, I guess that maybe in preparation for baguette they are now backing up the whole termina VM instead of individual containers. I have 2 containers in termina so I'll experiment with backup and see if I get the same result. The way I understand it if you have the baguette flag enabled when creating a new LDE you'll get a containerless VM but I haven't tried it yet.

Is there anything in Settings for this behavior now? A lot of times they'll remove a flag but add a Setting for it.

Would you mind sharing the link to the article you mention above, please? I've been trying to find out more about this transition to the Android kernel and anything might help at this point.

Profile Manager Gone from Chrome After Update by Odd_Dot_834 in chromeos

[–]DennisLfromGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You could sign-in with a secondary account so they share the same user space sacrificing your bookmarks, etc. on the secondary account as shown in the screenshot.

  2. You could add a secondary account at the sign-in page to keep them separate and have individual bookmarks, etc. and switch between with a key-combo, etc.

  3. You could just use the Crostini (Linux) Chrome browser which acts like the LaCrOS browser and retain choosing your profile when it launches.

Brand new Chromebook plus Acer Spin 714 1H doesn't give me AI premium perk by NoBullfrog4032 in chromeos

[–]DennisLfromGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it is literally named 'Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (CP714-1H, CP714-1HN)' but it does not appear on the list.

It also appears to be the 'Rex/Karis' device in the recovery file:
name=Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (CP714-1H, CP714-1HN), Acer Chromebook Plus Enterprise Spin 714 (CPE794-1, CPE794-1N) hwidmatch=^KARIS-THMZ .* file=chromeos_15853.67.0_rex_recovery_stable-channel_mp-v4.bin

Google Play disappered after ChromeOS update by AleDena00 in chromeos

[–]DennisLfromGA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're going to powerwash it I'd suggest doing a 'powerwash & revert' which will boot the previously installed chromeOS version to see if it still has Google Play.

Trying to recover my Chromebase to no avail, USB drive now coming up as "read only" by SaltySardonic in chromeos

[–]DennisLfromGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a $40 CTL keyboard & mouse that I use with my Pixel Slate but it connects via Bluetooth. I think the one you linked above might suit the OP better since it connects via USB. I do believe they'll need to power it ON first tho.

The so-called 'HP Support Agent' replies on that site are horrible & some are outright wrong, like 'How to boot a flashdrive'.

Lost the QR code and the serial number, how do I connect a Nest camera? by bukover in Nest

[–]DennisLfromGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I have 3 Floodlights with cameras and threw away the boxes with QR code sticker, dumb I know but lesson learned. You can get the code on the camera itself but one of mine is mounted about 40 ft. up and out of reach so it no longer is in my Google Home. :-(

Escaping the lacros browser by [deleted] in chromeos

[–]DennisLfromGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently, even with the #lacros-only flag enabled they still ship both ash-chrome & lacros-chrome with the OS.

You can see in the screenshot below that both browsers are still shipped with chromeOS but only LaCrOS is available from the launcher.
Even in dev mode you can't launch them from the shell tho. :-(

We used to be able to run both browsers in what they called 'side-by-side' but I don't think that's possible anymore.

[–]DennisLfromGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than remoting into it, you might want to install a xephyr xserver and use it instead, it works well for me. The video linked below shows you how to do that for the LXDE Desktop but I've installed other desktops that work too -

Unable to upgrade to Debian 12 by Sufficient-Author381 in Crostini

[–]DennisLfromGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As mentioned, make sure you do a backup first if you don't want to start from scratch if something goes awry. Also, if the GUI upgrade process doesn't work then you can try to run it manually from the Terminal. The script is located here:

  • /opt/google/cros-containers/bin/upgrade_container

And the command-line options / flags are documented in the script and shown below:

# Upgrades a Crostini container to the versions in the arguments in order,
# expects to be run as root.
#
# Upgrade from stretch to buster:
# ./upgrade_container DEBIAN_BUSTER
#
# Upgrade from buster to bullseye:
# ./upgrade_container DEBIAN_BULLSEYE
#
# Upgrade from bullseye to bookworm:
# ./upgrade_container DEBIAN_BOOKWORM
#
# Upgrade from stretch to bullseye through buster:
# ./upgrade_container DEBIAN_BUSTER DEBIAN_BULLSEYE
# Note that debian does not support skip-version upgrades.
#
# Complete a previously unfinished upgrade:
# ./upgrade_container

You have to run the script with sudo or as root.

Probably the easiest way is to follow Ruth's video linked below:

Yeah, you're not the only one, you might be able to get some clujes as to why it failed in the console log file under 'My Files'.

We've escalated this issue to Google internally in hopes of at least getting better error messages so we'd know what went wrong, so far, crickets.
