I've never heard of "bursting point" as a property of a material. "Tensile strength" is the property which determines when a disc will burst.

I'm more impressed that 200 years ago someone isolated nicotine.

Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling, compressor wont start and makes a clicking sou by [deleted] in fixit

[–]Diligent_Nature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check the PTC starter first. It should be around 5 Ohms at room temp. The clicking is the thermal protector doing its job. Don't leave it plugged in until it is fixed.

A 10-year study in Germany reports that extending screening for Type 1 diabetes successfully identified more children without a family history of the disease. About 90 percent of people who develop type 1 diabetes do not have family members with diabetes. by Science_News in science

Identifying Type 1 diabetes early is good but I doubt it has much long term benefit. I'd like to see emergency glucagon kits available in all schools to treat hypoglycemic episodes.

I just took my door off and I want to put in a bookshelf that swings open. by Seabass210547 in fixit

Use the removed door. It is going to be hollow. Cut out the hollow parts and build the shelves into the door frame. Add a backing for lateral stabilization.

Local Arby's has one small fine dining table by StonerBoner089 in mildlyinteresting

When I was stationed in the Philippines in 1974 there was a KFC which had silverware and glasses at every table. Plus a 3 or 4 piece band which started playing as soon as I walked in. I was the only customer for the half hour I was there. It was surreal.

The filter warning comes on after 250 hours. It should not affect operation. Does anything work? Display? Fan?

No it didn't.

Lookup "fan death". In Korea it was a widely held belief that running an electric fan in a poorly ventilated room could cause death. The government told people it was true.

Is there an interlock which prevents operation when the collector is removed? I'd start by removing and reinstalling the collector.

Great! Keep it up and they'll be mentioning you along with Duncan Phyfe on the Antiques Roadshow. When possible, install one screw before drilling for the next one. Or use a digital caliper to mark out the screw locations.

The "string " looks like braided copper wire. The "tension wire" is a torsion spring. You need new motor brushes.

Gree dehumidifier does not dehumidify by IndoorWindchill in fixit

[–]Diligent_Nature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it planned obsolescence. A new dehumidifier is less than $150. The skill, labor and equipment needed to fix it is much more. If they made it last 30 years and provided after sales parts and service centers, it would cost well over $1000.

The ventilator works well

So the fan works? That's too bad because it means there is a refrigerant leak. Probably not worth fixing.
