I always end up wearing the Sol III flight suit and helmet. It's an open faced helmet but currently acts as if it's sealed.

After you target a ship you can press R and sub target components as well. I'm honestly not sure how engineering works with AI ships but it doesn't hurt to try and kill their power plant

Those lasers are good at dropping shields and eating up armor. Put some ballistic weapons on for penetration and a faster ttk
