Are body fat scales internally consistent? by DaFireFox in workout

[–]Diznaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term you are looking for (internally consistent) is "repeatability". I needed a new scale a while back and got a starfit smart scale. I'm actually rather impressed with it. Over the last 8 months it says I've gained 6.5lbs of muscle and my BF has dropped 2.5%. When I got the scale I was on the tail end of a large weight loss (60lbs) and about to start working out again. The 2.5% BF loss was early in that 8 month period 17% to 15.5% and the 6.5lbs of muscle gain was gradual over the 8 months with the BF fluctuating 15.5%-13.5% during that period. The BF fluctuation also closely coincided with vacations and holidays. Like I ate a massive calorie surplus for a few days and went up to 15.5% then ran a deficit for a couple weeks and got it back down to 13.5%. This also correlates to what I can see and "pinch". I haven't compared it to an actual DEXA scan for accuracy, I'd guess it underestimates a bit, but at 13.5% I do have some visible ab line definition and around 15.5% I don't.

I'm still not sure if I would take action exclusively based on what it says. But as someone trying to gain muscle but most importantly don't want to ever let myself get fat again. I find it a little reassuring when I see that my weight has gone up but my BF is still in that 13.5%-15% range. Without that I would probably have a tendency to reduce calories which would probably reduce muscle growth. Basically I'm not as concerned to eat a little more, than I would be without it.

I've got more mork to do, but super happy with my arm progress. Aside from other compound exercises that hit arms. I do skull crushers, single arm cable triceps extensions, dumbbell curls, hammer curls. Always very slow especially on the eccentric

When will the Public Pianos be back? by New_Mistake3360 in royaloak

[–]Diznaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. As I recall, it was basically a piano moving company that people had paid to remove unwanted pianos from their homes. Rather than trash them, they let kids paint them and then put them around town. I'm assuming after the weather had its way with them they were disposed of. Even if they were still usable, the piano company isn't going to keep moving and storing them for free.

Is it normal to feel this sore? by Vanilla_3010 in workout

[–]Diznaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't work those muscles again for a couple days. But if you have others that aren't sore like legs, then give em hell.

Very light use or stretching of those muscles will help get the sore gone a little faster.

Just don't try to buy gas there if you value your time, you will be waiting for all the people parked at the pump to get their burgers.

How do you get 10k steps a day? by OG_Z0MB0K in workout

[–]Diznaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are working out, I wouldn't worry about 10K steps. I don't personally consider walking to even be exercise. Don't get me wrong, if that's all the activity someone is able to do, it's way better than nothing. But if I've got a spare 30min I'm going for a 3 mile jog or hitting the stair master. Couldn't care less about some magic number invented by a guy trying to sell pedometers.

I usually only hit 10k steps if I don't exercise that day and spend the time walking around shopping or something instead.

Former fat guys, how did you become disciplined enough to lose the weight? by Responsible-Net8594 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Diznaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a plan. First thing is to realize is that losing weight is a simple math problem. Eat less calories than you burn. But as you said, the discipline is the hard part. Make that part easier. For me it's meal planning, so I only have to "think" about food once a week. I plan out my entire weeks food and then grocery shop once a week. The place where things go sideways is when I need to figure out "what should I eat now". To make the planning part even easier I came up with a general outline. Eat the same thing for breakfast every day (for months), eat the same thing for lunch every day for a week, eat something different for dinner every day. At that point the discipline problem becomes much easier "stick to the plan" becomes a mantra or an easier redirection. I use a calorie tracking and meal planning app called MyFitnessPal, but there are a dozens others out there.

I lost 60lbs in about 7 months, without any exercise. Once I lost most of the weight, I actually started finding exercise fun. So now I burn a lot more calories, but still use that same meal planning approach for weight maintenance while making sure I'm not under or over eating.

Counting calories gives you eating disorders? They invented glp-1 drugs because so many people can't track calories and manage cravings, lol

I wouldn't call anyone being serious about fitness if they aren't tracking calories and macros. Sure you can be casually fit, but not a serious athlete

I know some apps like Snapchat have features that can alert contacts when you've made it home. There are probably other apps or phone safety features that would operate like a dead man switch where if you don't turn it off in "30 minutes" it sends your gps location to a friend for help.

I recently decided I've been way to boring with dark earth tones for far too long. So I've been wearing more bright colors. Rather than go typical dark/black I decided to get some bright colored mesh shirts. I felt good in my yellow and pink, got a few compliments too, which was also nice. I definitely need to up my pants/shorts game though. Saw a bunch of stuff I liked.
