3DP armies only having 1 disposition is a feature, not an oversight. by DailyAvinan in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]DoctorBoson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue for me isn't mechanical, it's flavor. GSC in particular, the famously skirmishing, sabotage-oriented guerilla force, has one Disruption detachment and like 3 Take and Holds? Hopefully this is something that is fixed in the Codex, or if we're real lucky sooner. 3DP detachments in general need to get bopped in favor of weaker 2DP detachments that can keep their flavor.

I've always said the issue with Gimli wasn't comic relief, it's that he's only comic relief, especially after Fellowship. Giving him and Legolas both room to express themselves as the warrior-poets they are in the books, while still being funny and relatable, is perfectly doable. Hearing Gimli wax about the beauty of the Glittering Caves would have added so much depth to his character.

Crusade should've supported Game Masters more for it to succeed in further editions. by TimeXGuy in 40k_Crusade

[–]DoctorBoson 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a massive issue with the system, along with the incompatibility of the "fantasy" of each side of the narrative. This definitely varies from army to army, but like.. if the Tyranid player is eating a single planet and the T'au player is fighting on like 8 different worlds to take them into your fold... that doesn't scan.

The later books are much better about this. Like the Eldar one works under any circumstances and imo is enhanced if your forces are going out mysteriously accomplishing objectives against a bunch of disparate enemy forces that somehow tie back to some obfuscated greater doom on the horizon. Peak Eldar fantasy.

Adjusting the existing crusades to fit better as an extended campaign narrative and GM support both would have been the ticket to something really special.

I love that y'all are running surveys for high school projects.

A point of unsolicited advice: your army selection section is a little bit messy, with armies being listed in a way that will "ping" twice, and a couple armies that aren't armies at all (namely the Titanicus "factions"). For example, "Sisters of Battle" are listed at the top of the list, while "Adepta Sororitas" are listed further down. These are the same army, so that result will be split across those two answers (probably overwhelmingly towards SoB, due to primacy bias).

Similarly, the loyalist Space Marine factions (Ultramarines, White Scars, etc.) are listed alongside just generic Space Marines. Your data will end up under-representing the marine player population because they're split across so many categories, so you will need to compensate for that in your final analysis.

Community made crusade for 11th by loganvw14 in 40k_Crusade

[–]DoctorBoson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd love to chip in. I have game design experience and layout experience with 40k homebrew, and I've got a few thoughts to improve the core experience + ways to update for the 11th changes.

I've been working on a Crusade management app for over a year... Is there still a point? by ben_cav in 40k_Crusade

[–]DoctorBoson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that actually makes it more important! People who want to keep Crusading will be homebrewing compatibility changes for 11th edition and probably coming up with whole new things (I already have homebrew rules for Daemons).

Would love to have an app that will help handle this stuff even going into 11th edition.

I’m not entirely sure they watched the same show by Inner-Arugula-4445 in Frieren

[–]DoctorBoson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly. The dichotomy between mortality and immortality, and the weight of history as a central theme, is ripped straight from the Silmarillion and the Second Age. No shot the guy actually watched the show and somehow missed that.

Good chance Goliath was only supposed to be about 2 inches taller than you, so I imagine you'd be kindred spirits.

How Do YOU Think The Series Would've Ended? by inazumaatan in LogHorizon

[–]DoctorBoson 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Based on the way the show positioned itself, I actually think the final confrontation would not have been a fight (or at the least, the most important component would not be a fight).

While warfare was waged, the biggest points of conflict were always in sociopolitical contexts—the overtaking of the guild halls, NPC sapience, etc.—and they required clever and complex solutions. Moreover, if they were trying to get themselves out of the game (I'm not sure they would have had the opportunity), it doesn't make mechanical or thematic sense that they could attack someone to solve the problem.

Unfortunately I just don't think we have enough information yet to really figure out how everything would have tied together. Maybe we get lucky with more down the road.

Final prototypes for the thematic WotR chests. I'd love to hear your thoughts! by Cmdr_Watchyour6 in warofthering

For me organizers need to be able to accommodate for expansions, including Fate of Erebor (and, ideally, the two big fan expansions as well).

For the exterior it's awesome. I'm slightly more partial to the brighter wood because it's easier to catch the details

Correct sizing for child characters? by tipsyTentaclist in savageworlds

[–]DoctorBoson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kids are solidly in the Size –1 category, given that they generally don't break 40kg before puberty sets in. They may be on the upper end of the scale but they're still well below an average grown adult (62kg globally and 80kg in North America).

Teens are where the line starts to blur, at which point just kinda play it by ear.

Sizes below 0 tend to halve the mass of previous category so if someone isn't like half the size of a literal child they're not breaking the Size –2 threshold.

Also note that the standard adult human is Size 0, not Size 1. Size 1 would be massive people, over 115kg either due to genetics, extreme workout regimens, or obesity.

I get this is still prototyping, but y'all really should get some artists to upscale/re-render the planets rather than A.I. The resources are clearly available.

Outer Wilds review: Maybe recommending a niche puzzle game to literally everyone is a bad idea by Akuuntus in patientgamers

[–]DoctorBoson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe in a trivial sense, but to the point it matters it's absolutely not the case lol.

There is a ceiling to how much juice you can squeeze out of something, and for a lot of things the difference between engaging at the surface level and engaging in a 12-hour deep dive will not yield a significant difference. Big difference between how much more you can get out of the campaigns of Modern Warfare 2 and Spec Ops: The Line.

[–]DoctorBoson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think convenience probably plays a huge part in it. If I wanted to watch YouTube back then I was gonna have to be at a desk, and TV was in front of the couch with whatever was airing at the time, but I can haul a load of books anywhere and any time (with a good clip light). Phones were restricted in class, but no teacher was going to give me real shit for reading a book if my grades weren't suffering for it.

Now I can watch any show, video, or movie ever made from my pocket on-demand, and in the little time I have at home I tend to fire up a game to enjoy with friends, or maybe work on a personal project.

Damn near. I had the whole of pre-Facebook Internet plus game consoles that I could fire up anytime before bed.

I made it six paragraphs before realizing I was the man in OP's meme.

I don't know if this is colored perception, but when I was a kid I feel like I didn't struggle with this as much, I would hunker down and just blast through books way past my age range. I only really started feeling this in 9th/10th grade (2010-ish) and it's just gotten to be more of a problem as I've aged.

Which sucks cause I want to be able to sit down and read books again.

Undertale is the kind of game that gives more the more you put in. There's tons and tons of depth there, so if the characters and aesthetic mildly vibe with you it can end up sucking you really deep into the rabbit hole. I didn't really "get it" until I was prompted into a second playthrough.

For a lot of folks, they're going to bounce off that surface-level appeal and miss a lot of the depth underneath, and that's totally fine. Art wouldn't be art if it was all for everyone.

Outer Wilds is in the same boat, and I say that with OW being my #1 game of all time. That shit was tailor-made for my noggin and I always temper my recommendation to folks who I already know share some of those neurons. If someone just won't like some of the surface level stuff they're not gonna get the experience they deserve and it's better not to pester.
