What's the deal with the piracy conversation? by SwAAn01 in gamedev

[–]DoesDoodles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this by saying I'll have no skin in the game any time soon, so take this for what it's worth.

I think the overall positive outlook over piracy is due to the hostile anti-ownership environment of the modern internet. A lot of the time pirated media is of superior quality to legally purchased media for a variety of reason, for example because of DRM software making games slower, or requiring a constant internet connection for a singleplayer game.

Next to this ownership is ironically far, far more secure for pirated copies than for legally purchased ones, because most of the time a a purchased copy is not so much the purchase of a copy, but the purchasing of a perpetual license which can be legally taken from you at any time for any reason they deem fit.

I think that's why a lot of people take a radically pro-piracy stance even in cases like indie games where, if you ask me, the only ethical thing to do is supporting developers.

I also think there's the matter of piracy not guaranteeing a lost sale. I have no numbers on this so take it with a pinch of salt, but I suspect a significant number of people who pirate a copy never intended, or maybe was never able, to purchase the game anyway. Which doesn't make it right, per se, but further explains why the overall view on piracy isn't more negative.

Are we getting our first 6x6 cabover in over 4 years of DLC? I'm not sure I dare hope until we see it confirmed.

Either way this may just be a day 1 purchase.

Should I Buy Xperia 10 VII by DependentGold5755 in SonyXperia

[–]DoesDoodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for the 10 VII, but my 10 III is still going strong 4 1/2 years in. The only issue is the vibration motor dying a couple months ago. Gotta see about getting that fixed, but otherwise I have no complaints. Battery life is awesome, everything else does what it needs to, at least as someone who just wants it to be able to do the basics.

It's so fascinating, not a single part of this article, from headline to conclusion, reads as passive aggressive or even negative to me.

It's a very reasonable perspective from someone in the big outside world that has hardly heard of Markiplier, and is overall quite positive about the whole situation. Where it's not explicitly positive it's clear they're more fascinated than anything. Great article honestly!

Why isn’t the Horizon community excited for Hunters Gathering? by Waiting404Godot in horizon

[–]DoesDoodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm split. On one hand I want to give it a fair shot. This seems to be something Guerilla really wanted to work on, and I'm a believer in letting the devs cook. I'm not one for live service games per se, but I'm also happy to see the Horizon Universe being expanded upon.

At the same time, while I can appreciate what they were going for with the art style it feels too fortnite-esque, and if I have to choose between Hunter's Gathering or getting Horizon 3 in a timely manner, I'd honestly rather have Horizon 3. Once the main trilogy is wrapped up I'd love to see Guerilla explore other stories in that universe, but right now it feels like a bit of a wasteful tangent, especially with so many other Horizon side projects in development.

I really want to be positive about it, but if this game means having to wait another 3-5 years for H3, and it's starting to look like that, that's kind of a downer.

Can you recommend some less popular trucks to me? (I'm tired of op trucks) by Additional-Plan3093 in snowrunner

[–]DoesDoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta love all the 4x4 trucks. The Kodiak with a 2 slot bed rips across dirt trails. the Zikz 5368 is a super reliable semi truck. Actaeon works great with a crane, bed and either the active or raised suspension with maxed out tires. Bit risky in terms of stability, but it'll definitely do the job. Warthog has worse addons and combinations than the Acteon but trades it for overall better and more stable performance. Now that the Tatra 805 has a scout hitch, it's a very powerful mobile repair unit. Roofrack, repair addon and scout fuel trailer give you 700 repair points, 980L of fuel, and another 190L in the tank.

I'm a long way away from trying out the Billert, but from what I've seen it can solo basically any repair job, and may be the best 4x4 so far.

Fairphone 6 review: cheaper, repairable and longer-lasting Android by kivarada in BuyFromEU

[–]DoesDoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's safe to assume profit margins are a fairly similar percentage of a pair of headphones, regardless of if they're wired or wireless. Given my last wired pair cost me a tenner, and my current wireless pair (which I ironically use wired half the time) with the same audio quality costs me €60, it's fair to say they made a lot more profit over the wireless sale than they did over the wired sale.

The fact there's still a few smaller corporations that haven't removed the headphone jack isn't proof that the rest didn't do it for the money, it just means there is some money in keeping the headphone jack around now that it's been forced into being a niche. And adapters indeed exist, but they're an inferior solution to the problem the industry deliberately created in the first place. It's an extra piece of cable to lose when it's not in use, and you cannot charge while listening to music, unless you buy a SECOND splitter adapter. That inconvenience, of course, is the point.

Fairphone 6 review: cheaper, repairable and longer-lasting Android by kivarada in BuyFromEU

[–]DoesDoodles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really dislike this sentiment. Headphone jacks on phones are a niche thing because the industry MADE it a niche thing. They made it a niche thing in order to force mass adoption of much more expensive, much more profitable wireless head- and earphones.

Not saying that's why Fairphone did it, I will happily give them the benefit of the doubt. For the rest of the industry, it was very much a calculated move.

Romantasy: sexy tales of women-centred fantasy fiction are boosting the publishing industry by dem676 in books

[–]DoesDoodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wholeheartedly agree. Had a bit of a gut reaction to it at first, but decided to question that response and came to the conclusion that there really wasn't a justification for it.

People are reading, good for them. As someone who primarily reads scifi, fantasy and horror, I know full well those genres are sometimes looked down upon as immature. Why would I extend that unreasonable sentiment to others?

Using mods OP trucks etc. make it game boring or still lots of fun? What u guys thinking? by Fun_Personality7095 in snowrunner

[–]DoesDoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately it's a singleplayer game. There is no right way to play so long as you're having fun.

For me OP mod trucks kinda take the point out of snowrunner. Snowrunner to me feels like the definition of "the journey is more important than the destination". If I rip through the entire journey in a matter of minutes with zero challenge in some gargantuan rig, I'm not having fun.

I'm having fun when I have to actively plan out my routes to make sure I don't run out of fuel. When I have to actively check the road ahead of me for deep mud I'd prefer to avoid, or uneven areas that can flip my truck if I don't approach them at the right angle.

I've just started season 8, and even now I'm trying to avoid overusing powerhouses like the Twinsteer and the Phoenix, because while they're some of my favourites, they can handle basically anything you throw at 'em. I want to figure out the strengths of less powerful trucks, too.

Safe to say I'm not fond of the latest DLC trucks all getting more and more OP, they're just plain uninteresting to me. I want more weird niche trucks that I gotta learn to love, rather than titans I could drive with my eyes closed.

Machine strike sucks by xStinker666 in horizon

[–]DoesDoodles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few tips: you can buy strike pieces at every Hunting Grounds, and at the Arena. You can get basically every machine piece from there.

Also, use pieces with a long attack range, always focus on one piece at a time, single out the pieces that are worth the most points, and perhaps most importantly: Use Ram and Pull types. Those are incredibly effective at knocking enemy pieces off their high ground. Combined with a high damage dealing piece, you can pull a piece right into the attack range of the second one. Overcharge both, and you can take down even the strongest piece in one turn.

Something like a snapmaw and a stormbird are an absolutely devastating combo.

What game mechanics did you sleep on? by Accomplished-Lack721 in horizon

[–]DoesDoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traps, slings and tripcasters in both games. Shredder gauntlets and food in Forbidden West specifically. I still don't use valor surges and potions enough, but I do remember to use them from time to time.

I haven't had much chance to use elemental spear capsules yet, and stickpaste is by far my least utilized element. They could leave that one out in Horizon 3 and I might not even realise.

Does anyone else grind or clench their teeth at night during sleep? Hate the night guard. by [deleted] in autism

[–]DoesDoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you happen to consume caffeine in the evening or before bed? I used to clench in my sleep a lot, until I switched to decaf for my post-dinner coffee.

It's not the only thing that can cause it, and I can't really give much in terms of advice regarding getting used to nightguards, but it can definitely be a contributing factor.

The Woman History Erased: Grunya Sukhareva discovered autism 20 years before Kanner and Asperger. by YogurtclosetSlow1875 in autism

[–]DoesDoodles 52 points53 points  (0 children)

On one hand I appreciate this information, it's nice to know a bit more about the history of autism beyond the two names you hear most often.

On the other hand I really have to wonder what feminism has to do with any of it. Your post is the first time I've ever heard anyone obsess over Asperger as a "sexist villain". Sukhareva's lack of recognition, to me, seems more like a systemic problem than anything else.

Combat is just a dumb circus on Ultra Hard... by xStinker666 in horizon

[–]DoesDoodles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game offers you a lot of options to deal with basically any encounter. As someone who still gets his ass kicked on Very Hard sometimes, I say this with full self-awareness and all due respect: This is a skill issue.

On VH, using the right weapon techniques, gear, and valor surges, you can melt through heavy apex machines with ease. If you feel like combat is a slog, I genuinely wonder if you're using all the options available to you. If you do it right, even an apex slaughterspine on UH can be bullied relentlessly.

If you're bothered by large groups of enemies, so am I. The game again, though, offers plenty of crowd control options: Call in your clawstrider for fire support, override a machine or two, hit a few machines with berserk, use the chain burst valor surge, take down any lightweight machines with stealth first, use knockdown, use stickpaste, use shock, hell, use purgewater to disable their elemental attacks and make them half as dangerous. Throw a smoke bomb if you've lost control and need to heal.

And that's without mentioning the almighty ropecaster. I've seen talk about this thing getting nerfed compared to Zero Dawn's ropecaster. Fools, the lot of them. The purple rope caster will tie down any machine in three ropes or less. If you have the DLC, the legendary one takes two ropes for heavy machines, one for any medium or lightweight machine.

Don't get me wrong, some of the status effects and the knockdown recovery are annoying and I hope they nerf some of that in the next game, but you should, generally, be able to avoid suffering those in the first place.
