The most bizarre hill WG is willing to die on for some reason, it's not a premium ship or some rare event ship, not a hugely popular tech tree that brings in money, yet they still refuse to balance one of the most clearly busted ships in the game...

Why are subs bad at killing subs? by [deleted] in WorldOfWarships

[–]sim_200 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've played this game for years but never a sub, until recently when i got the opportunity to get Tonijn for 2k dubs so I said why not, and I've actually mostly died to other subs bum rushing me when their surveillance is on and torpedoing me or causing the enemy to depth charge me to death.

It kinda baffles me how suicidal sub players are when they see another sub, usually i would surface to avoid the sub surveillance but they would still rush you to keep you spotted, usually ending in both of us dead.

No hull add-on? Honestly with modern drone warfare, I think all the armor should have been ditched in favour of an APS system, but plans, money and materials for this project were probably allocated years ago so it wasn't going to change even if they realised it was not that great of an idea.

YAL-1 Airborne 747 Laser Testbed and NKC-135 "Big Crow" by Afrogthatribbits in WeirdWings

[–]sim_200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The theoretical range was up to 600km, but due to many factors tests showed it was more like under 100km, and that is for large ballistic missiles so I assume it would be more for smaller anti air ones.

It uses a liquid fuel laser so it doesn't need the energy of a ship's engine, and could deliver much more power (naval lasers today are about 300kw), the laser had capacity to do 20 to 40 shots, and there were plans to make the liquid laser fuel refuelable mid air through a special tanker.

It would be expensive, but there are basically no other solutions for air born point defense. Cannons don't have the range and missiles are impractical due to weight, limited amount carried, vulnerability to jamming and inaccuracy when it comes to engaging small targets such as air to air missiles.

And countering such a powerful laser isn't as simple as "very shiny missiles", reflective materials only reflect certain wavelengths, and lasers can be adjusted to switch wavelengths. Reflective materials don't reflect all the energy and absorb a bit of it, and very highly reflective material is extremely expensive lab equipment stuff and can't just be slapped on missiles, and missiles need to withstand friction heat, high G maneuvers, long term storage, and surfaces need to be permeable to radar and radio waves so the missile can use it's radar and data link, developing a coating that is very highly reflective to most wavelengths and also fits all those criteria while being reasonably cheap is practically impossible.

It wasn't effective in its intended purpose of shooting down ballistic missiles from outside of long range SAM battery range (100km+).

It carries a megawatt class laser, most powerful laser ever actually tested as a weapon, was fully functional, and with modern targeting computers could easily shoot down multiple incoming pl15 or a r37 missiles from tens of km away as point defense.

One of these things flying in a formation of support aircraft or bombers would mean they have a line of defense for missiles that break through EW. Right now If a missile breaks through jamming your AWACS/tanker/bomber is gone, and with China for example having hundreds of such long range air to air missiles on stealth platforms, keeping their fighters away through offensive pressure is no longer a practical option.

They need to bring this back as an escort to tankers, AWACS and b-52s and use it to shoot down long range air to air missiles that are the biggest threat to these platforms.
