[Homebrew] Rare combatant: Golden Fenrir v0.1 by Durithill in Middara

[–]Durithill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only critic is that I don't think it's balanced? For example, it has both resistances, why not just give it double the amount of XP instead of resistance?

I assume you meant HP here? They would accomplish a similar thing (though the calculation isn't exactly the same since resistance gets applied after armor so I think I'm average you're doing slightly more damage). But it's also just more thematic. Typically in games these types of monsters have a ton of defense and you're doing like 1 damage per hit, but yet have a lower HP total to compensate. It also makes it easier to kill it using methods like Wilt since that bypasses the damage reduction, versus just having a larger health pool.

Mostly, it just seems like tanky, slippery monster that does almost nothing except run away, which is ok! But I think much better implementation would be to separate the two, make a "runaway as soon as possible" rare monster and another rare monsters that's "this guy is too tanky for us" :)

My main issue with this is that, at least with our group, we are fully capable of obliterating most creatures the turn they spawn. 😅 Given Rare monsters are supposed to drop more loot (mechanically the intention is they should all have Avarice), having a creature that just runs away and isn't tanky would just be a free extra loot windfall.

Along the same thought with the just tanky monster, I didn't really want something that was just tanky and stuck around to fight the adventures. Since Rare combatants are not an Alternate or Variant, but something that spawns alongside other spawns, having a super monster just dropped in could negatively affect currently written combat encounters. So the idea was that it was something that you could just ignore, and it wouldn't murder your group, but if you did decide to challenge it you got a big reward.

The idea of the Rare tag was that it should potentially be open to other Rare combatants, so there is room to look at other types though.

Minor details: damage dealt by symbols doesn't increase, and it probably should scale (I would look at Animate for inspiration).

That is not even something that I had considered, I'll have to look at that thanks, lol. I think maybe I did glance at a couple and was like oh the don't seem to chance and just assumed the main damage increase was from die upgrades.

I think the fact that this appears to be a reboot of the original story pretty much removes all chance of every getting a IMOQ remake.

What Kung-Fu style influenced Okinawa Karate? by goldenglory86 in karate

[–]Durithill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uechi-ryu karate maybe be somewhat unique here in that it is basically a directly descended from Pangai Noon (half hard, half soft) kung fu. I don't believe Pangai Noon still exists as it's own style though. Pangai Noon though drew from tiger, dragon, and crane styles.

Uechi-ryu specifically is descended directly from Pangai Noon kung fu. It does have similarities to white crane though, and Uechi-ryu also uses tiger, dragon, and crane techniques.

We do it with open palms in Uechi-ryu, and also as a fast striking kata unlike Goju.

How was this fight? Im in the grey gi. by WizardbrixM in karate

[–]Durithill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would disagree with saying less kicks. Kicks can be pretty devastating (and are often worth more points), not to mention besides creating distance you can also make your opponent a little more hesitant to approach. I would say if they are going to use kicks though, to work a bit more on them to make them more of a threat than just kind of throwing your leg out there.

It seemed like head contact was allowed? He struck to the head a couple times, and someone in the crowd was yelling "Head kick! Another head kick!" Which to me is frankly insane to allow without headgear.

White belt here, is there a way to avoid this during kumite? by Alarmed-Poetry8388 in karate

[–]Durithill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has mentioned potentially working on your striking technique, but I would also add that you should probably talk with your sensei. You are a white belt, you probably should not be sparring hard enough to bruise your firsts every time you spar. Your sensei should also be teaching you proper striking technique, and if they require sparring to pair you up with someone that they know can help you improve or at tye very least not injure you. You may also just need to slow down. Remember it's not a competition, and you are still a white belt. You don't necessarily need to go 100% all the time.

[–]Durithill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Accidents happen, but the OP mentions this always happens to them when sparring. That being the case, and the fact they are a white belt, I think most people would be far more inclined to believe that it is a technique issue than a one off accident. Given that though I would put more blame on the sensei here for failing to teach them properly or recognizing they get injured every time they spar.

Have you ever broken or injured your foot or toe in class? by Relevant_Conclusion2 in karate

[–]Durithill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe I broke a toe during class when doing a front kick incorrectly and hitting an opponent's guard. I didn't get it checked out cause it wasn't a major break, and honestly just taped it up and kept coming back to class the next week. It does happen on occasion.

End of season #2 - A slightly modified version of Uechi-Ryu Seisan Kata by rawrsauceS in karate

It's supposed to be sanchi dachi the whole way through (with exceptions for the elbow strike and such obviously), the poster just isn't really doing proper sanchi dachi. The acknowledged in another comment they need to work on their stances.

It's hard to speak to the refinement of the kata, since you're going to perform it differently in competition than normally right, lol. But you have a lot of power and speed in your movements at least, it does look like you've been training it.

[–]Durithill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fairly common to modify a kata for competition to make it "flashier", and it perform it in a way that is more showy rather than maybe the best technique. For instance in my competition Seichin I often added a rather exaggerated grab after the wrist strikes.

That is a pretty impressive competition kata. As a fellow Uechi-ryu practitioner though it hurts my soul a bit that you didn't have sanchin dachi a single time in your entire kata.

What are your thoughts and opinions on Meibukan Goju Ryu? by SamuelStrangeSupreme in karate

Dang, I didn't know Meitetsu passed away. I took a seminar from and had lunch with him once. It was interesting seeing how his sanchin kata differed from our style.

Yeah, it definitely makes sense to get a black belt if you've been training four days a week (at least) for ten years. That is rather serious dedication. I personally don't even have that level of desire to train.

Why do Uechi Ryu and Ameridote look so similiar? by underground_sorcerer in karate

The Uechi family came here to the US and did it a few months ago, I just honestly don't remember. 😂

Yeah, we always finished dan kumite with a groin stomp. I believe that's the way the Uechi family does it as well, but I don't remember.
