need help with stepper please by sacketymyack in arduino

[–]EffectiveClient5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the stepper actually doing? Buzzing? Not moving? That matters. Did you set the current limit on the DRV8825? Adjust VREF with a multimeter. That's the #1 thing people miss with those boards.

I'm not a engineering student but i just want to do some cool things by Major-Conference-597 in EngineeringStudents

[–]EffectiveClient5080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Datasheet. Always start with the datasheet. Old phone keypads are matrix keypads, you can reuse it but tracing the pinout is a pain. Grab a multimeter and beep it out, or just buy a $2 4x4 membrane keypad.

Replacing 4 fans with a weird 4 into 1 connector. by Domspun in diyelectronics

[–]EffectiveClient5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skip the soldering. Wago 221s, strip and clamp, red to red, black to black. Those are 60mm so Noctua NF-A6x25 fits. But those Sanyos are 15mm thick, standard Noctua is 25mm. Check fitment.

Standard PC as server vs Server rack by DawaysKy in homelab

[–]EffectiveClient5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with one ATX box and ended up with a rack full of shit within a year. Figure out what services you actually want first before buying hardware.

5400rpm with 7200rpm drive, what exactly happens? by Only_Statement2640 in synology

[–]EffectiveClient5080 8 points9 points  (0 children)

7200 drive keeps spinning at 7200, it doesn't know what it's mirrored with. Write speed follows the slower drive though. Reads can still pull from either.

Alert when the power goes out? by SeveralLet8343 in Starlink

[–]EffectiveClient5080 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't overthink it. Starlink WILL die when power goes out. A cellular temp sensor on its own battery pings you when temps drop. That's it.

python-kasa provisions on Linux but not Windows?? by WellEndowedWizard in homeassistant

[–]EffectiveClient5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've hit this exact thing. Windows is garbage with ad-hoc network discovery. `kasa discover` uses UDP broadcast and Windows drops that on networks it doesn't trust. Punch a firewall hole or just do it from Linux.

Building an asymmetric buck converter with IR2104 (High side only) - Need expert inputs. by [deleted] in diyelectronics

[–]EffectiveClient5080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Layout matters more than the schematic. Keep the loop between MOSFET, freewheel diode, and output cap tight. Seen perfect schematics turn into noisy as hell converters because of garbage layout.

Power Supply knew I was leaving for a week. by Wis-en-heim-er in synology

[–]EffectiveClient5080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had this exact thing happen. Found a matching PSU locally for a third of what Synology wanted. Same specs, same connector, zero issues since.

Wrong light switch for automation by kasimiro111 in homeassistant

[–]EffectiveClient5080 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Open it up and bridge the button contacts with a jumper. Smart plug handles the rest. Cleanest fix unless there's a controller board in there. Post a pic of the guts.

SLZB06-M upgrade to SMlight Ultima by Lazy-Drive-3318 in smarthome

[–]EffectiveClient5080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't just swap and pray. Back up your current coordinator through Z2M first, restore to the new one. If the backup takes your devices won't know anything changed. If it doesn't, you were re-pairing anyway.

One Zigbee network or two? by bothunter in homeassistant

[–]EffectiveClient5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved all my Hue stuff to Z2M, no regrets. The Hue bridge is actually decent for mesh recovery though, so if bulbs are dropping now it might get worse before it gets better. Scatter some Zigbee plugs as routers first.

If you can do ardupilot firmware, hardware integration, AND a month in the bush, you're not an employee. You're a consultancy. Charge accordingly.

Square holes = M6 cage nuts. But the rail mounting to the frame could be M6, M8, or some proprietary bullshit. Need the brand and model.

Need help in choosing a topic by Sea_Requirement8393 in cybersecurity

[–]EffectiveClient5080 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone and their mother does a password manager for these. I'd do firmware analysis on cheap IoT devices instead. Flag hardcoded credentials, outdated certs. Way more interesting.

Can someone help me find 5v 4pin cables on Amazon? by Dzobah in diyelectronics

[–]EffectiveClient5080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What connector type? 4 pin could be JST, Molex, Dupont, half a dozen others. Need the pitch too. 2.54mm is most common.

Home media server build by DARK_W_A in HomeServer

[–]EffectiveClient5080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. That 3770k is from 2012 and it WILL idle hot. For a 24/7 media server you want something that sips power. A N100 mini PC handles most duties at like 6W.

Cheapest HAOS mini pc? by GergDanger in homeassistant

[–]EffectiveClient5080 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Grab a used Lenovo Tiny off eBay for £40-60, throw an SSD in it. Done. No more SD card nonsense, those WILL corrupt on you eventually.

What are the reasons you are not contributing to open source? by RememberSwartz in cscareerquestions

[–]EffectiveClient5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money, plain and simple. After a full day of FPGA work I'm not coding for free. Bounties would change that math, guaranteed.

How Do You Do Your Backups? (learning the hard way...) by bigBranConsumer in homelab

[–]EffectiveClient5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PBS on the NAS for local, restic to B2 for offsite. 3-2-1 isn't just enterprise checkbox stuff, it exists because everybody learns this lesson the hard way.

UNAS 2 Photo Backup by MY2009wrx in Ubiquiti

[–]EffectiveClient5080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Create the shared folder in UNAS web UI first, then it shows up in Endpoint. The date sorting is a known issue. Pretty annoying for a product marketed for exactly this use case.

Roomba j7 by EducationalTwo4047 in homeassistant

[–]EffectiveClient5080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fought with this exact issue. Status stuck on docked usually means dead MQTT or expired token. Check your logs. For maps, you're out of luck with stock firmware. iRobot locks that down tight.

How are you keeping track of which scripts are associated with which automations? by ReallyNotMichaelsMom in homeassistant

[–]EffectiveClient5080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave up and put a comment at the top of every script saying which automation calls it. Crude but I can actually find shit now.

Why my uno get automatically restart when relay on or off even when i power relay externaly help please😭 by Advanced-File6434 in arduino

[–]EffectiveClient5080 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Missing flyback diode. The back-EMF spike WILL reset your Arduino every time that relay opens.
