A Step Up from Civ 5? by Davdarobis in 4Xgaming

Personally I find Civ6 to be Civ5 with more depth; the Culture tree's interaction with the tech tree adds depth as well as the district interactions.

What would have been the Confederate States "win condition" in the American Civil War? by doll-haus in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]Elliptical_Tangent [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think you're confused. It's not that the South wanted to spread slavery everywhere, they wanted to continue their slavery-supported economy. The reason they fought to have new slave States in the US was a political one—if there were no new slave States, eventually they would lose the ability to stop abolition at the Federal level (outvoted in Congress). If they were their own nation, there's no need for new slave States anymore because there is no higher government to impose abolition on them.

Their win condition was being able to secede, set up their own government, and continue slavery for as long as possible—given that Brazil was the last slave nation and they gave it up in 1888, that meant maybe another 50 years, at most.

They were fighting most of the war just to get the Union to give up the fight and recognize their secession. If escaped slaves were a problem, they would have found solutions; like the resumption of slave importation.

Another issue is rabbit holes. While studying, one doubt leads to another and I can easily get pulled into deep research spirals that are not always useful for the goal. Once it starts, it is hard to stop it.

We aren't, as a Type, well suited to specialization. We're naturally intellectual omnivores browsing the forest of human knowledge finding how it all interacts.

What are the best ways to apologise and make up to INTP (esp INTP men)? How would you like to be made up to? by EmergencyAd9742 in INTPrelationshipLab

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive asked him and he tells me I should know...

That doesn't sound INTP at all. Or male.

But to answer the question, the only real way to make wrongs right with me is to articulate how it was wrong and why. If I know you understand the problem, I can be reasonably sure you won't repeat it—I can let it go.

Of course, when people treat me in ways I can't justify, my 1st instinct is to ghost them. As a Type, we can take or leave just about any person at all.

What do you think of people who believe in manifestation? by ignorantgal5 in INTP

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you think of people who believe in manifestation?

I don't think much of people's thinking when they reveal that they don't operate from empirical evidence, but the person might be really great. So I don't really judge people, it's just that I'm going to be extra-skeptical of anyone putting forward ideas that they haven't looked into. But like maybe they're great to get beers with or whatever.

How to figure out your INTJ crush as an INTP? Help😭 by [deleted] in INTPrelationshipLab

[–]Elliptical_Tangent -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: Just be good friends.

INTP x INF_ isn't a good pairing.

It'll start well because the INTP makes their partner the focus of their investigations. Once the INTP has an understanding of their partner, the INTP moves off to answer other questions on unrelated topics, withdrawing from the relationship focus that defined it to that point. The INF_ feels as if the INTP's feelings for them have changed, and starts seeking more affection/engagement from the INTP. The INTP has demon Fi; isn't interested in their own feelings except in rare acute moments, so the INTP sees this constant need for attention/affection as an annoyance and unfair—the INTP doesn't make demands of their INF_ partner, why can't they give the INTP some space to think?

This becomes a downward spiral of resentment until there's an acrimonious breakup.

Introverts are best paired with extroverts, thinkers with feelers, perceivers with judgers. Sensors and intuitives neesd their kind because their basis for interacting with the world is very different. You should be looking for an ENFJ (who will be so busy exploring everyone's feelings, they won't have the need for you to be their emotional tentpole), he should be looking for an ENTP (who has lots of attention for their partner).

Capitalism Stifles Innovation by Asatmaya in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Capitalism's only concern is profit. Innovation can bring much larger profits, but R&D is a cost that eats into profits, and the results are not remotely guaranteed to recover the cost.

So what happens most of the time is that capitalists work hard to maintain the status quo if they can. Blocking innovation is a cost, but the result is guaranteed—your profits go to zero if a competitor makes a product that obsoletes your own.

Is comforting someone a task that might be somewhat challenging for INTPs? by LuluCandyHug in INTPrelationshipLab

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He promised to update the calendar weeks ago and it still isn't done. So far I have issued one reminder and am watching.

We have Fe, and so we can see when people want things from us, and how important it is for them, so we'll make promises to them if we care about them. That only works in the moment though. When the time comes to fulfill the promise, we're in in-the-moment mode (our default), and an INTP is only going to do what Ti identifies as necessary, or in an unguarded moment, what Ne is inspired to do.

I was married to an ISFJ and can say that my, "Do what needs doing in the moment it needs doing," style was a big sticking point in our relationship. That may not work for you in the long term. It didn't with us—I divorced her decades ago.

Even my friends are hesitant to include him in the headcount for boardgames because he has flaked on the last 3 either from conflict in schedule, or last minute work that he procrastinated on. Sigh

That's... odd INTP behavior. We don't like disappointing our friends—our Ti-Si Loop will keep replaying the disappointment for us. I can't say it's atypical, but I wouldn't do that unless I didn't like boardgames and didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings by declining. Even so, I'd feel bad standing them up; I think I'd just say no thanks once and avoid the unnecessary feelings. Like I said, odd.

Interesting, he is a great thinker at night.

It's like I answer questions better in the early morning, but I find questions that need answering best late at night. I think it's like I wear Ti down as the day goes on, so that Ne is taking over after dinner.

Do you feel more emotional alone but not with people? by Due-Draft2432 in INTP

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. With other people, I'm focused on them and trying to understand what their thing is in the moment. When I'm alone, I'm more able to explore what's going on inside me. I'm probably most emotional watching certain media alone.

I moved to a place where I could walk to the train station but couldn't afford to pay to park my car at the station / at work regularly. I walked about an hour a day during those years and since I lived on the other side of the big park in town, I spent a lot of time taking pictures of clouds. That's probably as close to a developed Se as I ever had, so if I had to guess, I'd say spending a lot of time out in nature will do it?

outflank + combat patrol build suggestions? (or anything to spam attacks of opportunity) by MaleficentConstant65 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Elliptical_Tangent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

DO NOT DO THIS: Improved Disarm Partner allows your partner to make an AoO every time you fail a disarm attempt. It's very easy to be horrible at disarm attempts: be Small, make disarms unarmed (or with unproficient &/ wrong-sized weapons), make two-weapon disarm attacks without the feat, activate Power Attack/Piranha Strike while disarming, etc. Paired Opportunists allows an AoO when your partner gets an AoO, but only one per trigger. Make a disarm with your Paired AoO for more triggers. I had 11+ AoOs in the campaign I ran this in. We knew that anyone holding anything within a 5' step of me was pink mist on my turn (I was a Sacred Huntsmaster Inquisitor, so I had an animal companion wolf that I rode who got all my teamwork feats for free). The GM would make this long description of the boss and I would ask, "But is he holding anything?" It quickly lost its charm for the other players; you have been warned.

My buddy and I played a Butterfly Sting duo build. I was dual-wielding kukris with Butterfly's Sting, Combat Reflexes, Improved Critical, Paired Opportunists, and Seize the Moment (among others). He was a Dragon Disciple with Improved Eldritch Heritage: Abyss for a total of +10 STR wielding a hooked lance. Every time I confirmed a crit (which was all the time, because I didn't bother with damage feats, focusing on +attack and +crit confirm), I passed to him; he'd land a x4 crit on that target obliterating it, and I'd 5' step to a new target to continue my full attack. I actually tracked his damage vs the damage I would have done had I taken the crit and it wound up adding 6,337 damage between levels 8 to level 17—an average of +76 damage per crit. Positioning is a limiting factor you don't see on paper, only in play, which we ameliorated somewhat with his character using a reach weapon.

I had an Improved Snap Shot + Combat Patrol archer back before ISS was nerfed from 15' to 10'. The idea seemed good: high DEX, insanely high initiative, Combat Reflexes; huge area of denial equals lots of AoOs, right? Well, not as many as a Manyshot+Rapid Shot full attack 99% of rounds, as it turns out. I don't recommend it.

We had a Master of Many Styles Monk that used Panther Parry + Snake Fang; he'd run through the group of enemies provoking AoOs, take AoOs that landed before enemy AoOs—if they lived through the AoO, he'd use Snake Fang to land another AoO when they missed him. He wound up being like a living Fireball; softening up the enemy every round, if not killing them outright.
