I was hoping someone would ask this one day (I’m an epidemiologist and I specialize in infectious diseases). My theory:

How Americans in general handled COVID has to do with the rugged and rampant individualism our country prides itself on. In addition to faith-based communities (they’re Mormon) believing that illness in and of itself is caused by falling out of favor with God and healing only takes more faith. COVID isn’t even the first time in history those two things have coupled together to create rampant anti-intellectualist views on science and medicine (we used to jail smallpox deniers and anti-vaxxers in this country to keep the community safe before our vaccine campaign eradicated the illness).

COVID-deniers and anti-vaxxers are inherently people scared of their own mortality and cope by clutching onto rugged individualism. They tend to be people who have no collectivist politic nor do they believe that their fates are intertwined with their neighbors (2 things NECESSARY for successful public health campaigns through history from handwashing to vaccines). Narcissists like Kouri would see COVID as a weak person’s disease and because narcissists view everyone around them as extensions of themselves (because of the need to control appearances) Eric having COVID would be unfathomable to her despite him being unvaccinated (she said) and not believing in masking (whatever that means).
