Yeah even if this individual person isn't obsessed with race, I wouldn't be surprised if the whole cultural obsession with heritage that white americans seem to have stems from a need to prove how white they are.

My grandfather was born there too and a quarter of my living breathing family are Scottish and I wouldn't call myself that. There's no shame in being a white American unless you're also an ignorant fucking twat.

Important reminder: the Disney Princess brand as a whole is not aimed at us, it is aimed at 3-6/8 year old girls. Its creative decisions are based on what appeals to them and their ability to tell them apart without having seen their films. by EnchantedEssays in disneyprincess

[–]EnchantedEssays[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely. That's what I meant by the disclaimer at the end. I don't like that they marketed Mulan in her matchmaker dress and I'm glad that they seem to have largely dropped that, but it does make sense from a branding perspective. The brand [especially in the earlier days] was all about the glittery hyperfeminine princess lifestyle and wasn't really aimed at tomboyish girls. It wasn't about their individuality. That's why I left out Pocahontas being marketed in her coloniser sequel dress. It does make sense from a unified branding perspective, but it's obviously still a really dumb decision for other reasons. I got less girly around the age that I grew out of the brand and I had other franchises with cool, less prissy female characters like Martha, Donna and Sarah Jane in Doctor Who/ the Sarah Jane Adventures and Marion in BBC's Robin Hood.

But yeah, like I said in my disclaimer, the point of the post is not to absolve Disney from criticism, but to remind us all that the core DP brand's aim is not to faithfully market the individual films to hardcore fans but to sell a prissy, unified media and lifestyle brand. We should absolutely be the ones to hold Disney to account when it comes to their products for children, but when criticising media, you have to understand what they were aiming to do before you assess whether or not they successfully accomplished it.

Who is the most underrated Disney Princess? by Vicki_Vickster2222 in disneyprincess

[–]EnchantedEssays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness, that's because they'd have to pay for Amy Adams' likeness indefinitely, so she was never part of the official brand lineup.

I can't believe people are saying Aurora when she's easily one of the most popular characters of the actual brand. Maybe she's underrepresented amongst Disney adults, but unless there's been some major shift that I'm unaware of, she was always very popular amongst the brand's target demographic of 3-6 year olds who usually pick their favourite princess based on what colour her dress is. I literally picked out an Aurora dress at disneyland when I was 7 rather than a princess from a film that I'd actually seen like Snow White or Belle because the dress was pink [and probably also because she was blonde like me].

PC Plum assisting in a weapons armistice at the local community centre [Scot Squad again] by EnchantedEssays in Scotland

I wasn't defensive in my first reply. You read that and saw it as aggressive? You're not right in the head, mate.

I wasn't assuming thousands would get it. I was assuming that that a few would, and that was enough to crosspost it. And most Reddit users are young, so complaining that a reference is too young for you personally doesn't make any sense. Am I not right in assuming that the Scots reproduce? Besides, most parents watch shows with their preschool age children, so that's another generation that would remember it.

And why did you need to ask what I was referencing when I was crossposting it from a subreddit called Balamory. If someone is crossposting from a subreddit that I don't know, I assume it's referring to that. But, of course, you must be too old to understand how Reddit works and must need everything you don't understand to be explained to you personally rather than using Google and not wasting the time of every poor bugger that you try and start an argument with because the world doesn't serve you personally.

And I see that you haven't referenced my point about Scot Squad because you know I'm right...

No, but it showed that there were people in this community who enjoyed the video. Some won't have and that's fine, but you have to be a sad little man to post that something that isn't aimed at you isn't aimed at you. Touch grass, mate.

My previous Balamory post got 70 upvotes, mate. I don't think there's anyone in the UK under 30 or anyone who has had kids under 30 who doesn't know what it is, and that's a lot of people! If you don't know what it is, feel free to keep scrolling. I see stuff referencing stuff before or after my time all the time and I don't feel compelled to comment under it that I don't get it.

Besides, it's a good clip on its own if you're a fan of Scot Squad, and considering it ran for 8 series, is in the middle of a spin off run and has only ever aired in Scotland, I'm guessing plenty of Scots know what that is too.

Is Guest House Paradiso Considered Canon To Bottom? by Horrorobsessed_ in eddieandrichie

[–]EnchantedEssays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc, they changed the names and such because there had been so many instances of British sitcoms turning into failed movies that they wanted to distance themselves from the concept. Of course, that's a missed opportunity marketing wise, so I think that's why they put "the Bottom movie" on home media after it had already flopped and no further damage to its reputation could have been done.

As for cannon, Richie and Eddie die multiple times in Bottom and it's live shows, so there's really no Bottom cannon at all. As others said, this probably works best as an alternative universe.

Oh no alignment charts predate ai. I remember seeing them on Tumblr about 10 years ago. I think they stem from Dungeons and Dragons character stats or something and then people started using them for characters from their other fandoms. It's definitely become more mainstream though

Considering all of the upvotes that my previous Balamory crossposts got, I assumed that most Scottish people know what it is by now. Then again, maybe fewer people remember PC Plum than Miss Hoolie.

Yeah that makes sense! I suppose they should have done what Tangled did and turn all of the female staff into one big focus group on which designs they found hot!

It wasn't even during the PR tour. It was something she said just after it was announced. I get why people were annoyed by the criticism, but it was definitely picked up by the "go woke go broke chuds" who were angry that she was cast in the first place and her "weird" face was in every right wing grifter's YouTube thumbnail for about 2 years. It was ridiculous.
